Aiskhylos tr. by Anne Carson, An Oresteia; âAgamemnonâ
the old days..
[ @luscinai -> Jason's birthday ] the cat bell doesn't chime even when she's leaping through his window straight into his bedroom, careful not to disturb his sleep. she's still a good dozen years from the graceful woman she grows to be, though silent she is nonetheless, carefully wrapped present in hand with a note in neat cursive: "happy birthday, little bird. there's some ice cream in the fridge when you wake up." a copy of the tempest. not anything so fancy like first edition, but it's the best a girl as young as her could get without the aid of the kane family.
He's not actually in his bed when she sneaks in. Two pillows, violently smushed into shape and buried beneath the thick blankets that Alfred kept stocked in this room, and another blanket providing the more human-ish shape to it. It wouldn't trick anyone used to waiting for a subtle rise and fall of breath, but for anyone just glancing in as they passed by... it worked perfectly.
Wary eyes track her from through the crack in the closet door, her presence disturbing only the light. In and out. He himself was frozen, shoe half on, holding perfectly still â the same focus of mind as if he were waiting for Croc to pass him by.
He holds his breath, and his stillness for another fifteen seconds after she slips back out the window. Just in case.
Then his foot seats the rest of the way into his shoe, and he pushes the closet door open again, creeping back out into his bedroom. Momentarily, his eyes are drawn to the wrapped gift, but he knows to keep his cover, he can't open it until he ostensibly "wakes" in the morning for school.
[ get the fuck back on the hellsite, coward -> jason's birthday ]: [ to: who the fuck gave you the right to be taller ] hey loser, free up your evening, lu and i are having a pizza party at the gargoyles up top. [ to: who the fuck gave you the right to be taller ] if you start calling me sappy i'll steal your favourite cereal. but thanks for always having my back, jay. happy birthday.
[txt: spare parts] what, now I gotta third wheel this shit? don't you have your own birthday to deal with?
[txt: spare parts] if I have to deal with you two kissing, I'm throwing you both off the roof. it'll just be me and the gargoyles for MY birthday.
[txt: spare parts]: happy birthday to you too.

[ @nightvow -> Jason's birthday ] Bruce leaves a small present where he knows Jason will find it in his path. It says Happy Birthday on the tag. He doesn't know if he'll take it, but he still leaves it there. Inside is a leather bound first edition of Wuthering Heights.
It's hard not to notice a small box, wrapped up and inconspicuous in a place where such boxes weren't expected. Sitting on the windowsill next to a crooked apartment door, lease legally belonging to one Todd Macbeth. He's busy, gone for a few days from the most frequented place he can call home, and strange packages arrive at the door.
The only reason he isn't more suspicious is, because like Bruce, he, too, has been known to leave inconspicuous packages in known pathways for specific days.
August 16th has come and gone, but only just.
It still doesn't stop Jason from turning it over in his hands, once, twice, thumbs running over the brown wrapping paper. Feels like a book. Which doesn't clear it, but between the tag and the achingly familiar handwriting.
This is Bruce's handiwork.
And only once past the crooked door, finicky lock pushed back into place, does Jason let his still-gloved thumb slide beneath one of the folds of the paper, popping the tape loose and up. One corner at a time.
( he remembers being much younger, and much more likely to leave shreds of wrapping paper behind as he held a new old edition of a classic novel reverently in his hands )
The smell of old paper meets him first, old paper, ink, and leather, and Jason closes his eyes, letting himself savor the scent. Most of his collection, he thinks, is still in the manor. Where it was safest Where it, no doubt, haunted Bruce every time he passed by.
He'd have to sneak in and add this to the shelves. After he's sat with it for a while, read the words from the delicate, yellowing pages.
every day i think about how jason met a bruce that did avenge him. that never got his own son back, but avenged him anyway.
and faced with that.
faced with the man bruce became....
it's the way jason has always been defined by his bonds. and a bruce that's taken vengeance for him, but lost everything â his friends, his family, the very kindness that had him take jason in in the first place.
suggesting jason abandon donna and kyle, who were fighting for their lives on the surface...
" Yeah, sure, no ulterior motives here whatsoever. " A pause. " Its in the same closet I keep the rest of my gear by the way. Though I have a feeling you are not going to be very successful at USING it. Have you ever even used a lasso before? " As if they both didn't know he would hardly use it for its ' proper ' purpose.
"It can't be that hard. I've swung a lasso before." And it wasn't something he'd need to really swing at Donna, anyway. Not really. "Why, you think people intend to run when they see Red Hood and a silver lasso?"
People, he says, as if...
â @sonburied said: hey don. where's your lasso? no reason.
" No reason huh? Why do I not BELIEVE that for one second? I could talk about how my lasso is a holy weapon intended for fighting and fighting only but ... " She would be quite the hypocrite to argue against using it for OTHER things, would she not?
"Yeah, no reason. Just wondering where it was." He'd be a fool if he didn't know about half the myth surrounding an Amazon and her lasso, and doubly one if he wasn't aware that it was one of the few things that could hold one.
Theoretically speaking.

dc after under the red hood: well we can't have jason being morally grey but operating with a relative soft spot for civilians, innocents, children, and anyone caught in the crossfire where they don't belong
dc: we'll make him murder indiscriminately, and also go out of his way to antagonize dick specifically when his original beef was with bruce for letting joker live
alright so i shitpost a little bit about it but!
outsiders was designed as a âwe go where/do what batman or mainline âvisibleâ vigilantes canâtâ team, right? a âdark titansâ if you want to be all dc edgy about it.
so! instead of making the outlaws and that whole bullshit mess⌠i propose jason gets recruited into the outsiders instead.
it a) allows for bruce to keep an eye on his son without ( probably ) stepping over bounds and starting yet another fight, but b) allows jason to work in his own particular way without getting heat about it.
( point a being there bc bruce basically just let jason run without any kind of confrontation/conflict past utrh. jason picked fights with his siblings? the siblings had to deal with it. might as well have the slightest bit of oversight )
technically, the outsiders weâre most familiar with is the 3rd iteration of the team. itâs also the iteration with a roster that makes the most sense for the mission.
jasonâs outsiders team will be the fifth iteration, replacing the rebirth iteration completely.

"man, I don't think you can even get the Joker to laugh at that one, and he laughs at anything."
I told a bad chemistry joke once. I got no reaction.
"That's because you're two-basic." And trying too hard.
He's gotta find where she hid her science project this time.
she's not getting anywhere like this. his height compared to her own has too big a gap, and that's not taking into account that his arm's longer than hers. â if this is your idea of making weaponry out of paperback copies of literature, i can always make it worse. â lithe form ducks behind his back, a little bit of spring to her step enough for her to leap the formerly impossible height difference to grab the book from his hand.
"hey, owâ" he wasn't holding the book any tighter than she had earlier, his yelp all performance and no bite as the paper slips from between his fingers. "'Take nothing on its looks; take everything on evidence.' There are better ways to weaponize paperbacks than holding them out of reach of a little old shrimp."

could she say it's unpredictable of him to be able to cite lines of classic literature by heart ? not really. she knows him better than that. â i was having a good time with it until somebody decided to take it from me, thank you. â but she's quick to follow suitâtiptoes and all the dexterity in her form hopping after him in her ( perhaps ) futile pursuit for her lost possession. damn him and his fucking height.
"when people say books are weaponsâ" another hop, graceful, weight shifting from the heel of one foot to the ball of the otherâ "this is not what they have in mind, you know." staying just out of range, holding the book itself in the air. just a mass market paperback, nothing special. save for the ideas it contained. the ideas it could spark up in the words and ink itself.
she doesn't even care how funny she probably looks at the moment trying to get back the poor book. â hey ! i didn't even get to bookmark that ! â absolutely aghast is what she is. â and leave those poor cartoon characters alone. they've done nothing to deserve this. â
"too bad!" suddenly he's leaping out of his leisurely posture, dancing just out of reach with a grace only bestowed by a childhood of climbing and throwing oneself off a rooftop. "'I am what you designed me to be. I am your blade. You cannot now complain if you also feel the hurt.' finally catching up on your lit homework, huh?"
