if i had a dollar for every pixel in this image i’d have 15 cents
if i had a dollar for every ounce of rage i felt in my body after i read this comment i would have enough money to buy a cannon to fire at you

I think in the same way there's a 90/10 rule with horror and comedy (horror works best when it's 90% horror and 10% comedy and vice versa) there's a 90/10 rule for some relationships in fiction that's like. Wholesome and fucked up. A good friendship is at its most compelling when it's also 10% a bit fucked up. Fucked up relationship is at its most compelling when there's at least 10% of something actually sweet and substantive within. Do you get me

Tanith Lee was the first woman to win the British Fantasy Award for best novel, for the second book of the Flat Earth series. She died in 2015. You can buy Tales From the Flat Earth here and here .
You can also borrow some of Tanith Lee’s books from the Internet Archive if you are unable to buy them.
Here’s a link to Night’s Master, the first book in the Flat Earth series.
I cannot recommend Lee’s work enough. And it pains me that I’d never even heard of her until last year.

Decide 10: A Relationship Tool I Found to be Helpful
A lot of internet advice says “don’t do things you don’t want to do” or “you don’t owe anyone anything.” Technically true, but real relationships are more complicated. Sometimes you’re tired but still willing, sometimes you’re excited, and sometimes you’re just… meh.
That’s why I love the Decide 10 system (from Prototype Thinking on Medium). It makes compromise clearer and more balanced. I saw this talked about on Instagram and looked it up.
Here’s how it works when it comes to activities (I used a different method for an emotional need, which I talk about in example 3).
Each person rates from 1–10 how much they want to do something.
You both reveal your numbers.
If the total is 10 or higher, you do it. If it’s lower, you renegotiate, postpone, or skip it.
Example 1: This is often used to decide whether to do a specific activity, but it can also be used to decide between two. You’re deciding between Taco Bell and Burger King for dinner.
Your partner rates Taco Bell 4. Burger King 8.
You rate Taco Bell 7, Burger King 5.
Totals:
Taco Bell = 12
Burger King = 12
Both hit the 10 threshold, so either works but you can see Burger King matters more to them than Taco Bell matters to you. So maybe a compromise is you go to Burger King that night and Taco Bell another.
Example 2: Compromise in Action
Let’s say someone rates something a 9 and you’re only a 3. The math adds up to 12, but beyond the numbers, it shows this thing is really important to them. In a close relationship, you might decide to stretch for them. Not because you owe it, but because you care. And often, they’ll stretch for you too.
The opposite can be true as well. Maybe you say something is a 1, but they rate it an 8. Seeing your low number might help them realize, “This isn’t worth draining you for. I can let it go this time.” That’s care, too.
Example 3: An Emotional Need
Today I was feeling sad. I told my friend I was a 6 on the “sad scale” and asked what her capacity was for calling. I clarified it wasn’t emergent. I was just sad.
She told me she was at about a 4 on capacity. She was tired and normally wouldn’t call tonight, but since I was at a 6, she wanted to support me. We agreed she’d call in two hours when she had privacy. She added that if I’d said it was emergent, she would have called right away, privacy or not.
That was me applying the concept in a different way. It was honesty about where we’re both at, balanced with flexibility.
The original Decide 10 article talks about adding numbers together for activities. With emotional needs, it worked a bit differently for me. My “6” was about how much support I needed, while my friend’s "4" was about her capacity to give support. Instead of adding the numbers, we compared them and found a compromise. She couldn’t call immediately, but she could call in two hours.
That’s the point of the scale. It is not rigid math, it’s a framework for honest communication.
Why this helps (especially if you have BPD):
No mind-reading. You don’t have to guess how much they care.
Saying “I’m a 3 on this” communicates low capacity without it sounding like rejection.
You can see when one person feels strongly and the other doesn’t. This makes compromise less painful.
It balances give-and-take instead of one person always “winning.”
Important to remember:
Use it for everyday decisions and non-emergency emotional check-ins. Don’t force it in crisis moments.
Numbers can change. A “2” today might be a “7” tomorrow.
The point isn’t the math. It's the honesty and balance it creates.
This is just one tool, but I think it’s a great way to practice boundaries, compromise, and clarity. Things that can be especially tricky when you live with BPD.
the fun thing about having a mental health crashout in your thirties is that sure yeah you're crashing out, but at the same time there's a part of you standing across the room smoking ben affleck style, going yeah yeah you're crashing out. you crashed out before you will crash out again can we wrap this up yet. and the most annoying part about it is that they're right, and that that does Not stop you from crashing out even a little. love and light on planet earth.
everybody give it up for this brand of green. round of applause for most under appreciated green
"…Take care of yourself."
my best & only real advice for dealing with depression/ depressive episodes is that it’s always better to do something in any capacity than to not do it at all. meaning, if you can only bare to brush your hair once this week, it’s better than if you didn’t brush it at all. if you only had the energy to brush your teeth today at 1 PM, its better to do it then instead of waiting for a conventionally appropriate time & maybe losing the motivation. if you were asleep all day and find your stomach growling at midnight, it is better to eat something even though you could just go back to sleep. what i’m trying to say is there’s a lot of shame & guilt that surround us when we’re not able to complete tasks in a way that’s considered normal and we can let that make us feel even worse about not having the mental space to take care of ourselves. these daily activities can be such a burden sometimes & when we’re in that headspace, we don’t really care and that’s when we spiral. even if it’s been a month since you last showered & you just managed to do it today, it’s better than letting that shame overcome you and continue to put it off. especially if it’s been so long, the task can be harder to do than if you did it every day. like doing your laundry can pile up until it just feels impossible. just washing a few pajamas & your bed sheets out of that massive hoard is better than continuing to sleep in dirty clothes. all of this to say, allowing yourself the grace of understanding in a particularly difficult emotional state is genuinely the best thing you can do for yourself, even if you were only able to do one thing for yourself today & especially if you couldn’t even manage that. understanding that you’re not an inherently worse person because you couldn’t eat a proper meal in days, but maybe planning tomorrow to pick up a piece of fruit so you can eat something you know has nutritional value. even if you do nothing else but rot in your bed all day & night, taking your meds & drinking a bottle of water is better than skipping your dose, but knowing that the world doesn’t end if you miss it once. be kinder to yourself when you’re feeling incredibly low & try to give your body what it needs. recognize that the shame & guilt you feel is internal & no one in their right mind would ridicule someone for trying to survive if all your brain wants to do is self-destruct. doing just one singular task you’ve been putting off can make a world of difference, i promise that you’ll thank yourself later ❤️

wait a minute! this isn't the culminating duel at the end of a burning path of vengeance! you're getting off on this!
#things can be two things
It's a thing
Hey! Sorry if this is weird or something you have answered before.
I’m a teenage girl, and I tend masterbate at least once a day, but I had accidentally fallen down a rabbit hole of porn addiction and that kinda stuff.
Now I’m really worried that my frequency in which I masterbate is bad for me. I haven’t felt and adverse affects in my personal life (still hanging with friends, still getting good grades etc) and masterbation has actually seem to have a positive effect on my mental health (the first time I used me rose toy the mental fog that had been covering my brain first months cleared lol)
Still, is this a dopamine hit that’s bad like doom scrolling? Or am I freaking out over nothing
Thanks
hi anon,
I'm really glad you took the time to send this ask in! I've noticed a lot of folks younger than me are VERY worried about porn addiction or otherwise being too sexual lately, and I'm very happy to be able to help alleviate those fears.
I would recommend starting with the answers to both of these previous asks, which I hope will provide some comfort. if nothing else, please read this concluding paragraph from the latter:
is it possible to become overly reliant on sexual stimulation as a form of self-soothing? sure, of course. it’s possible to become overly reliant on anything; absolutely any positive behavior can become detrimental if it’s performed to extremity. again, read that ask I linked! but pivoting from a breakdown to jacking off isn’t a bad idea. it can help you calm down, can be a great transition into a nap or sleep, and pops off a little burst of dopamine and oxytocin that’s probably very badly needed if you’re on the verge of a breakdown. of course it’s ideal to have other healthy outlets for when you’re feeling bad - making art or doing something else with your hands, doing some enjoyable physical activity, talking with friends or family, keeping a journal - but as one part of a larger diet of support and coping mechanism, horny behavior is great, normal, and very healthy.
masturbating regularly, even once a day, is completely fine. it doesn't sound as if it's disrupting anything of importance in your life, which says to me that it's a nonissue, and it's a nice little treat for you. and if masturbating daily is wrong, then rest assured that you and I will be in horny jail together 🫡
it always bums me out when I see people, especially teenagers, voicing suspicion about sexuality specifically because of the feel-good reactions that sexual pleasure can trigger in your brain. you can get the same feeling by taking a walk, petting your cat, spending time with a friend, or getting a tattoo, but none of those are treated with the same kind of suspicion. it speaks to a deep fear and distrust of sexuality, which is completely normal and natural, that I fear will not serve anyone well in the long run, so it's a pleasure to help unravel that a little. I hope this has been helpful to read!

Sometimes stuff sucks so much but then I look at the way my dog wags her tail when she eats her treat or drinks her water, and it makes things feel okay for a moment. It doesn’t fix anything but it is nice to enjoy the moment.
Take time to enjoy the little moments.
