However, before I get into that, I must address the two most common theories, and why they don't make any sense (aside from the fact that Jamie disproved them).

The first theory is obviously the possession theory. People thought that someone might've been possessing 2D during Phase 5, and it can be seen why. White eyes in the Gorillaz universe are often a sign of being possessed (hence Russel), and 2D has been acting a bit differently. However, here's the reason why that doesn't make sense... 2D had white eyes in Phase 2 and 3, years before Phase 5.

Weird how nobody who proposed that theory mentioned that art, huh?

Now, some people might probably argue: "Well, he might've been possessed back then too!" Well, here's where that falls apart. One of the arguments that people made in regards to him being possessed is that he has been acting differently than his usual self in Phase 5. Well, if that's evidence, then how come he hasn't been acting any differently than his usual self back in Phase 2 and 3? Did the supposed ghost/demon just decide to not do anything once he started inhabiting 2D's body until Phase 5 rolled around? And for that matter, there's also been art in Phase 4 of him with white eyes.

2D is still being 2D in this piece (even though judging by the scenario, he's drugged out of his mind). Nobody mentioned any weird behavior from him until Phase 5, and judging by what we've seen, it's in no way connected to his white eyes.

The second theory is the emotion theory. People theorized that 2D's eyes turn white when he's happy, and black when he's angry or sad. That theory makes zero sense (and yes, I saw Jamie's recent AMA, but even with that info, it doesn't make sense in the context of the actual lore).

For one, 2D has had black eyes before when he was happy.

Second, he had white eyes before when he wasn't happy. In fact, I'd argue that in these particular pieces of Phase 3 art, he's terrified.

So, within this context, it just doesn't add up. Now, onto my headcanon. 2D's eyes are connected with his emotions, but not in a way that other people described.

My headcanon is that within Phase 2-5, his eyes turn white whenever he feels extreme emotion, not necessarily positive or negative. Whenever he felt extreme euphoria, fury, panic, fear, ecstasy, or tranquility, his eyes would turn white. And now, in Phase 6, his are probably white because he's now fully at peace with himself.
