this is my first time making a cake in the oven (the most i've done before is mug cakes in the microwave lol) but since my main hangup is the baking process itself, it's like... yeah i've helped my mom do this kind of thing a lot, i know how to correctly measure flour etc. — this is just the first time i've done the whole thing by myself including the beaters and oven.
i'm not much of a chef all told, but it's my mom's birthday and when i saw this recipe last week I thought it would be the perfect thing to do since I haven't been able to get out much, what with the horrible air quality, so i couldn't exactly buy her some fancy chocolates or olives or whatever (my usual go-to) (i could have ordered some chocolate from a specific company but i forgot until it was too late, so, you know)

ingredients
3/4c or 177 mll extra virgin olive oil, plus more for greasing
i used earl gray tea and regular cocoa powder because—even though I know we have some, somewhere—I couldn't find any dutch cocoa powder. I'm sure it's buried in the closet somewhere but I just used the regular hershey's kind, and my mom uses that for most things too.
also, i looked it up and one of those flour companies' baking blogs (king arthur i think) said that regular non-dutch cocoa powder is preferable for recipes with baking soda, unless there are other acidic ingredients, because regular cocoa powder is more acidic than dutch, which neutralizes the soapy taste of baking soda, so I think it's probably fine. like, earl gray might have a bit of acid too but it's not red wine or orange juice, you know? so in this case using a more acidic cocoa powder is probably fine.
the recipe also doesn't specify a setting for the mixer so i accidentally beat the base on low the whole time, but since it's also 50% oil, it's not like the eggs are gonna whip into peaks or anything, so as long as it's well-incorporated I imagine it should be fine.
(AND i had to use canola oil because it turns out we're out of olive oil?! we thought we had more in the closet but turns out we did not... tragic but hopefully won't affect the taste that much, even if it would have a little extra je ne sais quois.)

this one part of is how capitalism ruins people, and exploits labor for profit.
