ive been doing this shit for a long ass time and i was a huge english nerd in school, so THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR GIVING ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO YAP!!! ill put it below a cut so it doesn't engulf people's timeline.
anyway heres Grapes Patented Top Ten Writing Tips
1. from experience, PLAN. SHIT. OUT. there's nothing wrong with spur of the moment ideas, they can be some of the best ones. but if you wanna do a full fic and not just a oneshot, you cant just make shit up as you go along. not only is it less coherent to your audience, it burns you out. trust me. write down all your ideas and figure out multiple ways to string them together. even if it feels unrewarding at first, eventually it'll all click together, and thats how you'll get your best result!
2. I worked on a collaborative novel before i started focusing on fanfics, and one thing that still holds true is that you need someone else to bounce ideas off of/a beta reader. if you're staring at something for a long time, you wont catch all the typos or plot holes or inconsistencies. find someone equally as passionate about the idea and keep in touch with them. it strengthens your ideas, challenges your comfort zone, and an extra proofread never hurts.
3. on the note of 'staring at something for a long time', take breaks. you are not a content machine, regardless if you're writing a full novel or making a fanfic. if you need a break but force yourself to keep going, you're gonna start resenting the project, and you never want that. it happened to me with my old shipwrecked fic. with clair de lune though, ive been pacing myself and taking solid breaks, and its just made me more excited to work on it, and (hopefully) thats been visible in the work itself.
4. use another document or program to plan out your story beats. TRUST ME ON THIS ONE. i write on ellipsus (i dont trust google docs anymore) and i use Milanote to make character webs/profiles and visualize how i want the story to progress. theyre both great apps/websites that can be used totally free! it helps to have them open in another tab you can click on while writing, especially if you're like me and have memory issues. i write down interesting/vibrant words i think i might use, story beats, characterization notes, plot holes that need filling, anything that might help make the story more solid. i like having a doc where i just ramble my train of thought and pick through ideas, the milanote where i organize it all, and a separate doc for the drafts themselves. (ellipsus lets you have multiple drafts on one document!)
5. when you're writing in general, know your characters. and when you're writing fanfiction with characters that arent yours, know how to fill in the blanks left by the source material. media analysis is so so important, you learn to MAKE great characters by STUDYING great characters. dialogue is smth i always hear people say they struggle with, but it becomes less of a hassle and more enjoyable when you spend time learning about and getting to know the characters. it takes time, but it becomes second nature. watch shows and movies, observe how and when characters talk, how they behave. learn to analyze!
6. RESEARCH. EVERYTHING. it sounds boring, but its genuinely one of the most fun parts once you get in the zone. for clair de lune ive spent hours scouring the mario wiki and watching gameplay footage just to note down anything that might be good stuff to work with, story-wise. its the whole reason kamek is as important as he is, just because i decided to research him a bit more. dont be afraid to let your writing teach you new stuff!! 'write what you know' doesnt have to be a limiting phrase when you use your writing to learn new things.
7. get back to basics. you're not sure about a sentence structure? how to properly use a double dash without sounding like chatgpt? look it up! theres no shame in wanting to use proper grammar and stronger vocab to enhance your ideas, and theres no shame in not immediately knowing something. the more you know, the more you can spice up your sentence structures. once you know the rules, you can break them in really cool ways that FEEL intentional. take an online writing/english course, anything you think will help you learn!
8. read stuff. read old classics, read poetry, read short stories, read horror, read things you like and things you dont. fanfiction is wonderful, ive learned some great things from fanfiction authors, but theres always something new to be learned from a book. if you have trouble reading, try an audiobook while you clean or work. watch video essays analyzing stories. the more you strengthen your own brain muscles, the easier it will get to lift that weight when it comes to storytelling.
9. find a balance. you can focus on story structure and good characterization while still having fun, but i also dont recommend jumping into a 100k word fanfiction with no plan beyond a basic idea. having respect for yourself and your audience goes a long way in making a story have great quality.
10. write.
is the idea dumb? write it down anyway.
is it going to take a long time? might as well start now.
is it cringe? we dont use that language around here.
your ideas cant do anything when theyre trapped up in your skull, you gotta let them escape, even if its in a completely unformatted stream of consciousness that you read through a month later and realize, hey that one idea wasnt so bad! or even if its a few words you jot down in the margin of a sketchbook. have the audacity to make something. do it because you love it, whether you share it or not, it's worth putting out into the world.

anytime I get insecure or mad at my writing just cuz I think it's horrid or ooc I just remind myself that at least it wasn't an ai that generated it, that it was only ever my own brain that did so, and suddenly I'm all better
okay so i was planning on making a sequel to that fanfic i did but i decided to just remake the old one for the time being, enjoy!
It had been three weeks since Giovanni had first started talking to Henry, one of the optimistic wolves, who he had encountered while they had been working in the kitchen area just next to the theater.
And now he was going what he insisted on calling 'a stupid date', as he adjusted his black suit and sprayed perfume over himself while he looked at his reflection in the mirror.
Finally, he left the house and set out to the theater. Nulla Terra did not have a lot of great date spots, so the theater had to do.
By the time that he got there Henry was already outside waiting for him in a light blue button up shirt. Henry was his normal cheerful self.
"Gio, I’m so glad that you could make it!" Henry's face was already starting to blush a little.
"Of course, you’re lucky that I had time!" Giovanni said with his usual egotism. They found their seats and not much longer afterward the movie started. It was one of the movies produced by Broadside Animation Studios.
As the movie went on the warmth in the room and the dark light made the room feel heavier and heavier. At one point Henry's head started to fall and soon he was asleep against Giovanni’s shoulder, drooling on him as well.
Giovanni tried to wake him up during and after the movie but it was no good.
Giovanni decided to just carry Henry to the main 4’s house and let him rest in his bed since he didn’t know where Henry’s house was. He thought about putting him on the couch so he could have the entire bed to himself, but he was afraid of the others finding out he was gay even the though they were never homophobic.
As Giovanni was undressing from his suit into night clothes he saw Henry on his bed, sleeping comfortably. After Giovanni was done changing, he got in his bed and looked at his boyfriend again.
Now Giovanni would never admit it if his life depended on it, but sometimes he did find Henry a little endearing, maybe even cute if he was in a good mood for Giovanni standards.
After that he fell asleep so he could get some sleep and distract himself from the fact he was sleeping in the same bed as someone, let alone someone he can call his boyfriend.
