A very slow progress
Week 10 27/09/2016
Today our group walked in to the horror of finding another groupâs model replaced with oursâŚoh the horror! Oh the pain of rejection!Â
(Above the model that brought ours to shame) To be fair I suppose it really did look better than ours, put ours to absolute shame! Haha, well done guys!Â
(Above our model) So with the model complete to a standard everyone was happy with and could useâŚwellâŚAndy gave ours back (rejection at itâs greatestâŚbeing handed back our crummy modelâŚ..hahaha) Moving on from this took itâs time and toll on us but after overcoming the biggest rejection of our lives and design career (haha) we got into asking around if anyone needed any maker hands to get to work on anythingâŚoh, right after we wrote out our recipes for one of the other groups of course :D
And so here is my recipe, oliebollen, also referred to as dutch donuts or translated rather awkwardlyâŚI suppose if you want to find out the translation you can do that ;P So whilst I neatly wrote out this recipe for the sweet doughy goodness of the treats my grandmother traditionally makes on New Years Eve; the rest of my group finished up and went to count the furnishing outside at the Alumini Courtyard for Group 23, who is working on locate, specifically the set up of furniture.Â
As Charlotte mentioned, this means the initial idea of collecting furniture will be no more and weâll have to look to other groups to help out..with no luck of finding many right now to help out. This will mean we may perhaps really just be bombarded in the last two weeks toward the event and itâs something that really just comes in hand with our role.
SoâŚhahahâŚbring on week 11 and 12! *forcing a grin all the while sweat and anxiety sweeps over* whoo! :DÂ
On top of what we did as a group in class Andy also showed us a quick video on Federico Ferretti and the idea of âFranken ModelsâÂ
âIt is really important that you also go deeper, business is connected to economics, people are connected to culture, and technology is connected at the end of the day with environment.â -Â Federico Ferretti
Andy is always telling us to use our hands when we design, to get away from the computer and just experiment, make with our hands. Things are easier to control, understand and try out this way. I like this method and this way of thinking. I am always trying things out on paper, sketching and trying things on paper more than I use the computer. Before making digital illustrations I would always sketch what I wanted, almost as a rubric plan before I go in to refine it. My process is always paper rough, paper draft, paper refined and then I move to the computer. Just knowing things work in the physical version though always makes things easier later on. This doesnât always work though, not everything on paper or prototype correlated to digital version or finalised versions, but it certainly does majority of the time, and if not still definitely helps understand variations, why and how it MAY work.Â
Week 11
We all took the week to work on our collective poster designs and get the ready to print.Â
My first poster i designed (pictured bellow) was inspired by a rave poster, the composition focuses on the sushi rolls i made during one of the sprints in the studio class.Â
The inspiration for my final designs for the posters came from Knowledge Editions use of using brutalist images to convey space in a design
http://knowledge-editions.com/
The thinking behind these posters came from looking at what the space of the event is rather than the subject, instead of doing a poster about food for an event called âFoodâ i wanted to look at it from a broader perspective. I thought about what our surroundings were, a university, but this is a creative course, I couldnât just make a poster about a university setting, university at its core is too bureaucratic to fully represent our way of thinking, i thought of how would i convey both a university and creative setting, I thought of what a scholar was, and what imagery I could use, I ultimately chose the Roman Pillar as a symbol of learning, tradition and a culture of admiring those who are scholars. When i thought of how to appropriate this image to fit the criteria of the poster, i knew i had to break it apart in some form of another to represent the creative side of our learning.Â
This is where i took inspiration from Knowledge Editions, I scanned the document on a scanner and moved it around so it would warp and create the shape i needed to help represent what i wanted the poster to mean.
This was the final product of my own personal sprint and with a bit of feedback from my group.Â
What i want this photo to convey is a whole bunch on themes, from the obvious connectivity between academia and creative teachings, to the feeling of adventure and movement.Â
I will be working on a series of posters that continue to use these elements.
In todays class we all came together to work out what we will use as the design for the tote bag, how we will print the posters and how we will get the facilities to print these posters as a risograph.Â
So far Andy will be helping us print the tote bag and i had asked a favour of a friend of mine to use their risograph printer. Next week we should have a physical product of how all the posters should look.
Food Style Guide
I made this for the whole group as a quick guide for what is appropriate and not appropriate for the Food logo just to give it that professional touch.Â
3.10.16.. Back to rapid prototyping đđ¨
Team: Marianne, Brenda, Mira
In class Today our team went back to rapid prototyping and quickly sketched out a story board for our upcoming video for the week 13 event. Really messy, rough and sketchy but our idea is there! We also had the chance to chat with Jasper in class who is friends with some buskers on Bourke st. From the help of Jasper, we were able to ask whether we could film them perform followed by the interview. We might be able to film sometime this week but we will see how our schedule fit with theirs!
The difference between the previous video we composed for the week six event is that our questions will be focused around the relationship between music and food rather than merely addressing the awareness (banning of amplified busking) itself. Through this video-making, we will hopefully outline how music can directly activate a distinctive mood and experience of an environment including restaurants, picnic as well as the Melbourne streets. But at the same time we will be addressing the awareness by highlighting the issue and then leading on to how it will affect their personal lifestyle = to eat.
Here are some of the (rough) interview questions we have discussed:
đŽ1. How will banning of amplified busking affect your daily life? đŽ2. How/why/what do you think your music performance will change the mood or atmosphere of the audience as well as the situation? đŽ3. What do you think of the idea of audience interaction and music performance? (eating at the picnic with raw music) đŽ4. What would the experience mean to you?, and what will you gain creatively (performing at the picnic event)
The questions are still sketchy, but the things listed above will be the topic to be outlined. We also have few shot ideas in mind, to film people eating on the grass perhaps at Rmit courtyard, in front of state library or at the Royal botanic garden with some busking music in the background: to portray the relations of food+music. Marianneâs idea of the area in front of state library sounds like a great idea as there are usually some buskers performing in front of the space with people chilling with the music. The area in front of the state library is also listed in the permit zone by Buskers guide.Â

(Image: @bananas_playground, this was preformed in front of the state library grass area)Â

Here we go
Okay so we have got a good plan of what we want to do.
We going to try and map the journey of the food from the very beginning (farm) to the end (compost). Well there isnât really an end, it is more the life cycle that we want to show because we are so disconnected with that whole process these days
The group is meeting this Thursday to interview some stall holders at the Vic market that sell fruit. We have brainstormed some questions like:
- Where does the fruit come from? Do you farm yourself?
- How do you transport the fruit? What are the steps to get it here?
- How did you get into selling/farming?
- Whats the hardest thing about farming/selling?
- What brings you to the vic market?
- What do you do with any food you canât sell? How do you make sure you donât have much food wasted and everything is sold?
- Will you be around on a Friday?
++ some people will be taking photos, some interviewing and some documenting the stalls we went to so that we can go back to the same stall holders and buy fruit from them.Â
We want to do some sort of instillation mapping the journey of a piece of fruit perhaps using string and map of Victoria to show how far that fruit has traveled and how much work has been put into growing that fruit just so we can eat it. We will have to work out exactly what we can do once we see if the interviews work.Â
I managed to make contact with the sustainability manager at QV shes free on Thursdays and Fridays to chat over the phone so I will ring her then.
- Can we use the compost?
- Where does the product from the compost go?
- Where is it?
- What can we put in to the compost?
WOODEN CUTLERY?
Another rough mock up I have done, but this time using the idea of wooden cutlery. Through this we are able to be not only sustainable but economical, and are able to follow our original plan.
This is following the idea of using the embossed label maker thing, as it will be easy for us to conceal the edges of the sticker if we use this approach/medium.Â
We have talked to the group who are constructing the invite/food box, and we might do a slight collaboration with them or see what the dominant colour that they are using is and use that as the section of colour at the end of the cutlery.Â
Perhaps we could try incorporating the studentâs name instead of their number. From what Iâve heard, a lot of people donât know their student number (Iâm not sure how), so maybe we could ask everyone for their preferred name, and use that instead.
Publication Update for Core2639
Publication Update
We wanted to update the group with how we are progressing. So far we have decided on our invitation layout and its function as a plate/container. We have designed it to make sure we utilise all the space on an A3 sheet, which leaves space for any of you to use. We will provide a photo with measurements to show what is available, however final design is not finished so consider your design may not communicate with ours (this isnât an issue but just so youâre aware).
Progress!! Itâs alive! ALIIIVVEE!!
Week 11Â 04/10/2016
We used the time in this class to go around and talk to the other teams, where their thoughts were heading and where we could fit our hands on into their process. This time we were actually able to get people wanting our help.Â
So now we are able to actually make a proper start on ACTUALLY doing thing, and not just counting chairs (although that was probably helpful to one group) so now we will be able to get stuck into doing a lot more.Â
After talking to many of the other teams and writing down possible teams that need or may need our help we decided on talking further on Friday and next week, as many of the teams are still in the stage of developing their ideas and prototypes.Â
We did get an email from one of the groups asking us to collect cardboard boxes, so I think this is something we can possibly do in the next few weeks and get out of the way so that we can then get on into helping the many other groups that will likely, in their panic toward the lead up to the event, need our hands. But we are getting somewhere now, which is great!
Week 11: working with others
This week we recognised how important it was to communicate and collaborate, to avoid problems down the track. We decided to contact a few other groups, who were working with visual elements within the food event. We thought that it was important to create consistency and continuity with all elements of the event where possible. I thought I would try to book in the âmaker palsâ as it would great to have extra hands on board, once we have finalised our ideas.Â
I also thought I should contact Lachie, as they created a very helpful style guide. I just wanted to clarify colours - to see if we could incorporate these into our entrance. He said that we could use any colour, to keep it open.Â
Adrian took the initiative to message me and set up a date and time where we could talk about the furniture and layout of the event. We would have to do this in small people, as we have found it hard to meet as a collective (time wise).
This has been good to clarify details with people, and to start to get people on board!

Monday (Itâs) the 3rd of October
Mondayâs class for our group was used as an opportunity to go over our âgame planâ for the Bowl.
Before class, I went to the Alumni Court to gather the measurements for the two different tables that were available at the Alumni Court. Amarat and I decided that using the taller and longer table would be most fitting for the arrangements we had in mind,
Andy has so kindly bought us tarp for the bowl and we will begin to experiment with the table and tarp on Friday.Â
Weâve spoken to a few different groups and since one of the groups are using food scraps as compost later, weâve decided that it would be ideal to provide cardboard boxes underneath the table, to put the food scraps in while we prepare the food. Iâve e-mailed the Maker Pals team to help us scour for some cardboard boxes that will meet our size criteria.
10 / 04 / 2016 Â TEST WITH SHEETÂ
(YEPâŚâŚ ANOTHER TEST)
This time Farhana brought us the white sheet to test, firstly how to hang up the sheet is the big problem, like the first picture, we firstly just threw the sheet through the ropes and it turned out to be very short. Then we changed the way to hang up the sheet and it finally seemed like a screen. But after that I realized that it maybe too short and should not be as that wide, so we fold that sheet and hang the other side of the sheet on the rope, then the test went well except the faces in the video will be distorted while moving. Then we test the canvas on the ceiling as well and this time according to Sarahâs advice, we may manipulate the video from horizontal to vertical to fit the canvas cause the canvas is long and narrow, and another problem occoured to us was how to make the projector stand up if it is set up on the ground. We gonna think about that and discuss with the case that Andy gave us(actually only received by Juyee)Â
Progress is slow..
Week 10- 27th Sep.
This week our group was basically begging for work or an idea to work on for people. What we ended up doing was going out to the Alumni Courtyard and counting the amount of chairs and tables and the different kinds there was for Adrianâs furniture group.
They were re-using existing furniture from the Courtyard and they needed to know what was there to be used. We took pictures as well as listing the information for them.
Going around to other groups to see if we could aid them in any way or if they had anything concrete we could plan/ block in a time to help them. Unfortunately all except Adrianâs group no longer needed our help, their ideas had developed to the point where their original plan had changed and the work we thought we would be doing is no more.
We also discovered another model made by the Monday class of the Alumni Court and it put ours (the one we made the previous week) to shame.
Our plan is to go to the Monday studio class for a short while to see in person and push a the emphasis that we really are here to help. It would be good for the Monday class to see our faces instead of just relying on the posters we had put up and handed out in the previous weeks.
After a brief talk with Andy, the worry our group has about doing all the work at the last minute and potentially having to turn some groups away because of the potential sudden flow of work may be all part and parcel of what our group does. Managing ourselves so we can help as many as we possibly can, splitting the workload and evaluating who needs our help the most and also for how long we help a certain group.
26.9.16 Model Making
In yesterdays class we decided that it would be beneficial to create a model of how the tent is going to be, so that all groups in activate/locate can get a better visual for where their contribution will be situated in relation to everything else.
This was a really fun task and the model allowed us to gain a better appreciation for the space. We begun our own idea refining by thinking about how we can use the open walls for the light manipulation. However, andy came over to speak to us about this and said that we were thinking about it in the wrong way and perhaps we could steer away from light and focus wholly on the sensory experience.Â
We already had the idea to map the tongues different taste areas as an interactive experience but andy suggested we move away from our scientific approach. Instead we are now looking into a way to create an entrance to the event in the form of a giant mouth/tongue. This will set a fun and peculiar atmosphere for the event and alter the sensory experience.
Instructions About GMT
After a short consultation with Andy on last Friday (unfortunately i was the only one presented so I need to reinform my team about whatâs going on), our team sort of alter our aim which we were supposed to introduce uses of technology in organic means â using FaceTime/Skype to share our experience on the actual event with others, so as to expand our community, into some thing more practical.Â
What was suggested is to frame our idea into actual actions, and with our core concept of bringing people together by the positive means of phones/pads, what is more important than to simply set up stands is to really communicate with the focus on doing same things altogether in one specific moment. So finally we decided to leave it to our cohort to decide whether they gonna do it or not, our team will just concentrating on the method we convey this concept.
So what we have now is planning to design a printed piece with some instructions and illustrations on it. Since Andy has seen some of my artworks on Bechance he suggested we can really use our strength to make contributions, as for me, I could use my drawing skills to do the illustration part and my team members could work with the content and structure of the whole printed matter. Â We still need to discuss more about the details later in this week.
And we got a sketch prototype of what the final print may look like. We were thinking of doing folded zines with probably a phone appearance? And because there will be a chance of using risograph in week 12 we planed to finish the work before that day. Â

Food Project - Visual Identity
For this semesterâs group project my group and I are working on creating a visual identity for the event. Initially we had planned to create a website as a service however there were quite a few other groups going down this route.
We wanted to create a visual identity that was as open to creative interpretation as the brief. So after some brainstorming and little back and forth we landed on the idea of using a visual device to bring the identity together. This is not uncommon to some approaches pioneered by Experimental Jetset and Pentagram.Â
Experimental Jetset created this W or Zig Zag device to tie in all the different publications put out by The Whitney Art Museum in New York. Itâs simple, versatile and extremely effective. We wanted to create a device that took a similar approach.
We prototyped a lot of different logo options all with varied levels of success.
After a few options had been sketched out they where digitised and tested for validity.
The option that proved the most successful was the semi circle device. Itâs a positive and versatile shape that can be easily rolled out across a number of different application.Â

making a smile by connecting two letters of a word-mark reminds me also of the âa to zâ smile in the Amazon logo. A great âopenâ design.
Here are some recipes we have managed to collect thus far! Its starting to gain some traction but there are still a lot missing, also from the other class. If everyone could start sending them in so we can make the book! You have until the THURSDAY NEXT WEEK!Â
