11 / 10 / 2016     DISCUSSION ON CURATING THE IMAGES

Today we reviewed all of the images we have collected from other groups and we changed the plan on the image resource, we finally decided to use every groups’ imageries to make up a ppt for projecting. Sarah, Farhana and Juyee will ask other haven’t gave us photos groups to email us some images and I will try to find some videos from public platform like tumblr or facebook, and all of this will gather in google doc. 

For the stand of the projector, I tested my idea at home like the picture showed, I used a printer as a projector which is some kinds of like in terms of the size and weight. But it can’t be put in other angles coz we need it to be maybe slightly slope not totally straight, we will test with real projector this Friday. And we talked with Renea’s group and they came up with that maybe we can use the stand on the table for laptops and fortunately Charlotte has a stand and she is very convenient to go Ikea and buy those kind of things so she will bring one with her this Friday so that we can see which way will work better. 

07 / 10 / 2016      DISCUSSION ABOUT THE CONTENT

We use this Friday time to basically discussed about what to project. Firstly we looked through which group can be the resource of imagery collecting. We divided other groups into multiple kinds like “definitely can resource from” “not sure” and “need to ask”, as the second picture.

Andy gave us some suggestion to think about as well:

How are we gonna to curate the images so it’s not just a slide show of us looking at ourselves(he suggested we could also get stock images of people eating fruit and looking happy).

Have a plan B in case people don’t send us the stuff we expected

Aim to keep things simple and let the outcome meaningful and complex, rather than the opposite.

The best way to figure out is to have a play with that which we will do so on next Tuesday.

How are we letting other groups know about the opportunities to project stuff on the day?!

Maybe we should post something on FB to let others know about 

We discussed with Hamish about his video and fortunately he will send us a video next week. We also talked with group of drinks which can may also provide some pictures for us as well.

For how to set up the projector(s), I will test my idea of using tissue rolls(in package), and Sarah also came up with an idea which is to use cushions she already has. Anyway we will test later before Tuesday.

And, we set up everyone’s responsibilities before next week( lots to do this weekend :(     .... :

Everyone book a projector for the day of the even( Friday 21 October)

 We tested the projector on multiple materials:

20 / 09 / 2016       REFINE OUR PROPOSAL

Andy told us to make a model for our proposal but after several-week meetings, we totally gave up the original one because we didn’t want to annoy people with so many collecting things and we can’t figure out what to do with that either so according to Farhana we could do projector things or things like that, and it eventually turned out to be an environmental design. The model we made refered to the tent in alumni court, our idea is to hang on certain projectors on the corner and project images or animations on the tent or something else to make a special environment for people. 

We then have a short discussion about what should we do for this proposal, we actually think about in which way we can project:

Cube / tent / large sheets / on both sides of the same sheet?

Then we went to the alumni court to check how many and where are the power points that we can use and we finally found 11 power points including 5-6 outside the tent. We also have a short chat with April as she was there talking with other groups, she introduced us Francis Alys which may help us with the projections as he uses projectors to create some art works.

(Actually nothing was settled :( 

The conclusion of this discussion is that we need to confirm what other group want to put in the space so that we can arrange everything all together.

We basically used this meeting time for sharing the information with other groups to confirm what other groups are doing,with groups we gonna work together. And we also brainstorm what can the material be like to put the stories on. For the group of postcards, we think maybe we can take advantages of each other like swoping photos(to put on the stories if possible) to save time. 

The materials can be like: woods/clothes/paper plates/coasters/sticker badger/napkins/bibs/placemats......

In Tuesdays workshop, we were told to maybe redesign or remix with other groups and post a tumblr about the core purpose. WE actually went to alumni court to see the place in person maybe to find some opportunities to use there.

There we found that there is neccessarities to discuss with Adrian’s Table setting group, cause we need to use the space where tables will occupy considerable space and we need to make coordination with that. What advantages we can take from the space is that there is some decorations on the ceiling some green leaves and ropes maybe can hang on something about our installation. WE also notice that if group 1 take their first proposal which will manipulate everything in dark then we cannot process our plan that day because that will totally influence our story plan to hang on everything out, therefore we need to make sure that they won’t take their first proposal.

There is a hard decision that we just realize we have the almost the same proposal with group of digital stories. But thankfully they finally chose to collect receipt from other people and it’s not been decided which materials or things we gonna put on as installations, we all thought that if there are so many groups collecting things from people, they would be so frustrated and the outcome will not be as what we expected or they may also be not willing to join in. After we talked with Andy about this things, he just gave us some examples like transparent bags or things already exist and people want to share out. Whatever, this really stress us up to figure out what to put on the ceiling or wall. And we plan to share our ideas this Friday.

06 / 09 / 2016      WORK SHOP

In this workshop we as a group of food pitch, looked at other groups’ final presentation document, we analysed and found there are some groups that can be associated with and summarize them into several key words so that it is clear to find out:

group 12: recycled materials/ furniture/ decoration

this group is working on sorts of the same area as our group --- decorations, also have some relationship with our paper stories so we thought maybe there is some possibilities to work together. 

group 20: food stamping/ collective work from100+students/ interactive activity

this group has almost the same purpose as our group --- to make people interactive, if we combine with them, the power of the interaction may be more stand out.

group 6: furniture/ decorations / helping others / craft 

this can be also a group to work with cause it also involved with decorations or something like that.

group 16: magazine documenting/ experiences week by week

this is a group of document but the point is that maybe our groups’ final outcomes can be used for them.

group 5: individual postcards/ photo & messages

we can work with them cause we can arrange and collect the materials together, maybe combine the two events together as well for the reason that our two groups materials are almost the same.

After we finally present our proposal, we received certain feedbacks:

09 / 08 / 2016 & 16 / 08 / 2016 Andy tried to make everything clear in these two workshop time. These pictures are all about our ‘MEET IN A NICE PLAE’. On the last workshop before presentation, Andy gave us three steps to think about:

After Andy’s suggestion, we finally decided to go to a cafe named BROTHER BABA BUDAN. It doomed to be a great experience because the decoration is special, so many chairs sticked or hanged on the top, not big but delicate and you will not find the special of this little cafe if you don’t come closer, many times we just pass by and miss such a good place to stay( the snacks are nice as well obviously:) We are lucky cause there is not a long queue as usual as Farhana said. We also record the dialogue between us in a secret way that Farhana didn’t tell us in advance, she just tell us after the meet cause this will avoid some pretension and we plan to do this every time we meet together.

Sarah took some notes of the chat on the tissue, we all talked about the elements that will influence the experience of a meal : anticipation, organisation, lighting, atmosphere, sound, music, ambient, process, ordering, no signage, spatial, seating, decor-staff, type of meal....

29 / 07 / 2016    SOUP LECTURE 

Andy prepared pumpkin soup for all of us without any waste, his control of the amount is incredible( and we should consider it as well when framed our picnic) . This soup lecture actually gave us some experience of the picnic and let us know how it will be conducted in the whole process of the picnic. He also introduced the purpose of this project, to let us know more about the participation design and prepare for the next semester. We will have this soup or other food lecture (picnic) every Friday as a chance to meet and chat with higher level students of our course.

19 / 07 / 2016  COMMUNICATION DESIGN      

S t u d i o  1

Today’s workshop was basically consist of two parts, one is Gordon Matta-Clark who is a performance artist famous for his site-specific artworks. The video Andy showed us is about the process of producing a good meal from the market bargain to the gather of taste. This is a long and painstaking project to think about without enough equipment to deal with the goods, the process seems more interesting. While I was searching more information about Matta-Clark’s restaurant, I found ‘The activities at FOOD helped delineate how the art community defined itself in downtown Manhattan.’ this sentence really remind me of 798 art zone in Beijing, which were originally some factories left from the military era but reconstructed a little and finally become a art zone for artists living and presenting their works as factories are cheap to rent and artists are short of money. As a result, this zone also defines how the art community exists and expand in society. Comparing this with soho -- the restaurant of Matta-Clark, they all convey the situation of art in the society, or in another word, how art can exist in the big society.

Remember that Andy threw out some questions before the class formally began : ‘ How design interfaces with society?’, this question had been answered through these examples I think, art has occupied some places in our community and take 798 art zone for instance, it have redefined the factory in the society, it can not only produce things but also be a gathering ground for artist. Therefore, arts can interactive with the general people and get into their society. Artists living in the factories is originally from New York, a result of poverty and open area for the artists.

Andy also introduced TOKYO PICNIC CLUB for us which is like a group really crazy about picnic! em..just kidding, to make sure that everyone has enough area to have picnic, for them picnic is like a lifestyle for people not only a kind of meal, everyone has the rights to enjoy their free time with picnic. They are made up of artists from multiple fields and the outcomes is also an art work. What they have done is all about the society. To make people live better. Therefore, the connection between design and society is use design as a tool to make a better society in an innovative way.
