Being completely confused, the flintlock in your hands drops to the floor with a loud clud. You're not sure whether to scream for the other soldiers in the fort or if you should pretend this was all a dream and crawl back into your bed.

"Woah," Luffy says, snickering at you. "You look like you just saw a ghost."

Every response you can think of ends up stuck in your throat. You don't know what to say, what to do -- there was nothing written in the Welcome to the Marines Guidebook For Newbies (8th Edition) about how to handle a situation where Straw Hat Luffy barges into your room at night!

The boy enters and strides into your bunker, glancing at everything in your room -- his eyes linger a bit longer at the photos of your days as a chore girl to where you were now, a Warrant Officer for the Marines -- before he crouches right next to your collapsed form.

"Food. I wanna eat," he says. He jabs a finger into your cheek and it snaps you out of your dazed state. "Gonna die if I don't get some meat in my stomach soon."

Or maybe you're still not fully recovered, because you find yourself sneaking around the halls of the fort with Luffy trailing behind you. He's dressed in your old uniform, and it kind of leaves you giddy knowing that one of the most feared pirates on the sea is wearing clothes you wore years ago.

You manage to make it to the kitchen without bumping into the recruits on night watch; as soon as you shut the door behind you, Luffy throws himself at the fridge at the speed of light.

While Luffy has his head in the fridge, shoving whatever he could grab onto into his mouth, you sit cross-legged on the floor beside him. He eats like a mutt who hasn't eaten in years, specks of food flying everywhere -- you're almost apologetic when you ask him to grab you a bottle of your favorite drink, but you're visibly surprised when an arm stretches into the fridge and out of the fridge to hand you said drink.

You ask him questions while in between sips, but all his answers are muffled with the comical amount of god-knows-how-many-day-old leftovers stuffed into his cheeks. It amuses you how the Luffy in front of you is different from the rumors you've heard.

You're sure he's emptied 80% of the pantry by the time he's satiated. He sags right against you, his stick-like body is now bloated and round like a ball. "Why do the Marines always have so much food... I'm so jealous," he whines, and you find him and his childish attitude... cute.

After a few moments of rolling Luffy around the kitchen floor like a ball, he looks at you with his lips pursed, like he's contemplating something. Although, you're not sure if there's anything but meat in that noggin of his. Then: "Hey, Pajamas. Tell me 'bout yourself."

The question takes you off-guard, but you tell him about yourself anyway. About your childhood, how your entire bloodline were Marines so, of course, you'd be one too. You don't understand why the words seem to slip off your tongue so naturally, unlike earlier.

There's something about the way Luffy listens to the story of your life that makes more words spill out of your lips. The pirates you've fought, the way you found yourself attracted to the lifestyle pirates had led, to your dream of exploring the sea without being tied down to the Marines. You find yourself saying everything to him -- to this boy without realizing it.

And while you're in the middle of talking about a hobby that you picked up a few months ago, Luffy stands up all of a sudden -- when the hell did he get skinny again? -- and stares you down.

The stare is almost suffocating. You think he's finally bored of hearing you talk about nothing but yourself, so you clench your fists and grit your teeth -- but instead, he grins. He grins so, so, wide with stars and determination in his eyes.
