The Great Gatsby
âThereâs another way of reading Anne of Green Gables, and thatâs to assume that the true central character is not Anne, but Marilla Cuthbert. Anne herself doesnât really change throughout the book. She grows taller, her hair turns from âcarrotsâ to âa handsome auburnâ, her clothes get much prettier, due to the spirit of clothes competition she awakens in Marilla, she talks less, though more thoughtfully, but thatâs about it. As she herself says, sheâs still the same girl inside. Similarly, Matthew remains Matthew, and Anneâs best chum Diana is equally static. Only Marilla unfolds into something unimaginable to us at the beginning of the book. Her growing love for Anne, and her growing ability to express that love - not Anneâs duckling-to-swan act - is the real magic transformation. Anne is the catalyst who allows the crisp, rigid Marilla to finally express her long-buried softer human emotions. At the beginning of the book, itâs Anne who does all the crying; by the end of it, much of this task has been transferred to Marilla. As Mrs Rachel Lynde says, âMarilla Cuthbert has got mellow. Thatâs what.ââ

and a shoutout to the two MÄori men who travelled to Vienna in 1859, got themselves apprenticed as printers (and incidentally became accomplished ballroom dancers), and finally had an audience with Franz Josef where they charmed him so much that he sent a printing press to New ZealandâŚ.which was promptly used from 1861 to print the newspaper of the Kingitanga anti-colonial movement.
Just researched a bit- theyâre names are Wiremu Toetoe and Te Hemara Rerehau Paraone and itâs quite a fascinating story.
am a big fan of the relationship dynamic that is "scary powerful lady falls in love with total himbo because he's too dumb to be intimidated by her but drinks enough respect women juice on the regular to be very impressed by and genuinely supportive of everything she does"
Not a lady, but we understand the vibe.Â
Did you know? You can buy wild rice direct from Native folks!
Wild rice isnât actually rice-itâs a grass seed that grows naturally in lakes in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and itâs been an indigenous staple food for many, many centuries. Although some corporations have taken and grown âwild riceâ in paddies, it is not the same thing- it is actually a hybrid seed that is not the same quality and often sold for a higher price anyways.
Not only is the wild rice a sacred food, but is a form of Indigenous science that lets you know how healthy the water is (or isnât), because water is life and affects the health of all people, plants, and animals that live with it. This has been belatedly acknowledged by very recent research from the University of Minnesota that the health of the wild rice can predict all health of lakes and streams.
I buy my wild rice from the Red Lake Nation and the White Earth Nation.
The cool thing about buying from the White Earth Nation is that they also have videos showing the traditional processes involved in harvesting and parching the rice, and they offer stuff like gift baskets, chokecherry preserves, maple candy, soup & pancake mix, and cookbooks which make great gifts!
What I like about buying from the Red Lake Nation is there is a massive variety and quantity of different wild rice products at many different prices! They are aware that the broken grains are not as quality, but it doesnât go to waste-you can buy the broken grains for âSoup Bitsâ ($3.49) which are an inexpensive way to add flavor & nutrition to soups and stews. They also offer âQuick Cookâ wild rice ($5.69), which is prepared from a lighter roast/parch process that allows the grains to cook in a shorter amount of time and has a rich, traditional flavor.
You can also buy syrups and jellies made from hand harvested hawthorn, chokecherry, and highbush cranberry there.
BUT! If youâre worried about shipping costs or like me, are disabled/have limited mobility and canât always get to the store like you might prefer,Red Lake Nation also sells their rice through Amazon, eligible for Prime shipping. This is also good for those, Native or not, who are struggling in the community and share their wishlists for help purchasing food.(Also please know this post is only meant to share information, not to make anyone feel bad or imply theyâre eating âinferiorâ food.)
If youâre interested in finding out what other nations cultivate and sell/trade wild rice, thereâs a partial list here of where you can buy hand-harvested wild rice from native people in the Great Lakes region
Leech Lake sells rice too! Support our Tribes!
Ricing season is upon us, PLEASE BUY RICE FROM LEECH LAKE BAND OF OJIBWE!!! WE HAVE THE BEST RICE AND ITS SO GOOD FOR YOU. MIIGWETCH.
Robert Pattinson's commentary in Twilight is hilarious
In The Departed (2006), Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg play two different charactersâ a subtle nod to them being two different actors, despite my wife being unable to tell them apart on the first viewing of the movie.
op this is the funniest post youâve made yet

I can drink 3 cups of coffee and go straight to sleep, this is just one example of what is fundamentaly wrong with me as a person
Thatâs a possible sign of ADHD, my dudes. :P One of the prevailing theories explaining ADHD is that itâs caused by a lack of certain neurotransmitters, specifically norepinephrine and serotonin. Everybody has a background level of these neurotransmitters, and when they see or do something novel or interesting, those neurotransmitters increase, and then decrease back down to normal levels. Because people with ADHD have less of these than they should, they are constantly looking for something new and interesting to give them that jolt back to normal levels. Thatâs why theyâre so easily distracted and why they hyperfocus on things that interest them. Stimulant drugs, like caffeine, cause your brain to make more of those neurotransmitters. So while neurotypical people might get a buzz off caffeine, people with ADHD just get bumped up closer to normal levels, and so, if anything, feel calmer. Thatâs why they prescribe what are basically amphetamines as treatment for ADHD and why ADHD meds are so bad for people who donât have ADHD.

Yup! At my job as a mental health counselor where we assess people, if we start detecting hints of what we think might be ADHD, itâs actually something my supervisor trained me to do, to just ask âSo when that sort of thing happens, do you ever drink coffee or soda to calm down?â or âDoes coffee actually help you wake up, or does it just not do anything?â because itâs such a commonly known fact about ADHD for people in the mental health field.
Half a pot of coffee makes me ânormalâ.
