“It’s not really a ‘prize’ if you can spend time with me whenever you want,” Maya replied with a laugh. Well, whenever they were visiting each other, to be more accurate. She turned the envelop over in her hand, trying to picture what would be inside. Hm, if it were very important, that would mean it had to be super heavy, right? To her, it felt of about average weight. She tucked her finger under the corner fold of the flap and attempted to make a clean tear. Despite her best efforts, by the time she got toward the center, the tear had spread off course. It became increasingly difficult to move her finger due to the paper bunching up. “Ow!” And of course, on the inside of her index finger, a paper cut. It stung, but a battle wound like that was not enough to stop her. Pouting, Maya forgot about any civilized attempt at getting the envelop open and just tore into it like a Christmas present. After a good few shreds, she finally pulled the letter out, holding it with triumph. “Hah!” She slammed it down on the table flat, looking at Soseki with a proud smirk. In the end, it felt like a prize after all.
“Not when you live on the other side of the world,” he complained dramatically. Maya still lived in Castanet and he in Echo Village. The ‘other side of the world’ could be reached with a boat trip, but Soseki always found it be an incredibly long boat trip.
Soseki watched with no small amount of amusement as Maya opened the envelope. You would think it was made of plastic with the difficulty she was having with it. The paper bunched and curled, making it difficult to tear, and before he could offer help, she had tore it open in a wild frenzy. It was a wonder the letter was even left intact.
“You sure showed that envelope, cupcake.” Soseki grinned at her. “Let’s see what it says.” He reached over and picked it up, holding it out so they could both see what was written.
Mr. Yamamato,
This is my final reminder. Your book signing is coming up soon at the Black Cat Books bookstore in the city. The Path To Here is the main book that will be featured but I suspect others might come up given your prolific works. All you need to do is show up. I’ve taken care of everything else and sent an additional reminder to your email. Email me your confirmation as soon as possible.
Don’t make me come down there and get you.
Best regards, Michiko Kato Editor for GB Co.
Soseki had read about half of the first paragraph before his voice dwindled off sheepishly. He chuckled. “I guess I ah, forgot about this.” It had been somewhere in the back of his mind but he had been so busy with other things. Like taking walks and spending time with Maya.
