@farmhandsoldier | What a Cow
Maya didnât usually have an excuse to talk with Donnel. Her days consisted of sweeping floors, making beds, and serving mealsâbound by the chores of an innkeeperâs daughter. But, on lucky occasions, she did have the treat of delivering leftovers cooked up by her grandmother to the nearby residents. And Maya always considered visiting the farms particularly enjoyable. Rarely did she get to see ranch animals up close when they were off her dinner plate. Which really was a shame, because they were as cute as they were delicious. âĽ
The potato stew dangling in the woven basket on her arm was soon forgotten. Somewhere between walking from the inn to Donnelâs house, Maya became distracted by the pair of cows grazing in the fields. She approached the fence, climbing the wooden boards and leaning onto her forearms as she observed them. Blue eyes locked with brown. Mayaâs watch intensified. The pupils were so round, and the eyelashes long and thick. It almost seemed like the stare of a pretty doll, only warmer and less creepy.Â
If Maya heard the footsteps approaching behind her, she didnât react by way of turning. Instead she spoke without breaking her gaze for a moment, not even daring to blink.
âDonnel, I think I can read this cowâs mind.â
It was amazing how different the world was with Maya by his side. Soseki made the trip up this mountain almost every day, but the trips were always the easiest when she accompanied him. At the top, she fluttered about with the camera, a ball of energy that he was surprised didnât scare away the wildlife.
Of course, if they wanted to see the peacock, theyâd have to wait and be patient. Not that he was worried if they did or not. Oh itâd be nice, but the real joy was spending time with Maya.Â
Soseki leaned over to get a look at the picture of Klausâ head, his hand resting on her shoulder, hair brushing against her cheek. The rock really did look like the back of his head! It made him chuckle. âWe should take him the rock too. He could put it up in his office and then he wonât be lonely.â Soseki wouldnât, but the look on Klausâ face would be priceless.
âHey, why donât we take a picture of us?â Soseki smiled broadly. âI want to remember how beautiful you look right now.âÂ
Maya giggledâboth at Sosekiâs joke about Klaus and the ticklish sensation of his hair on her cheek. She doubted that the doctor was ever lonely with Sosekiâs frequent visits, but she said nothing. A rebuttal might cause him to pull back in theatrical fashion, and while Maya enjoyed seeing his face contort in mock pain, she liked having him close even more.
âOooh yeah, I bet Iâm just the prettiest armrest you ever had~â Tone teasing, her face lit up with a joyous blush. But wait? Mayaâs gaze fell once again to the screen as she flipped through the pictures. Soseki was right! All these photos, and not a single one was of them! Â
âHow did we forget to get one of us?!â Unacceptable! The problem needed to be remedied right away. Snuggling close to him, Mayaâs arm looped around Sosekiâs waist while the other lifted the camera high above them.
âOkay, are you ready? One, two, three, cheese~â Mayaâs face dimpled with a toothy smile as the shutter clicked. She lowered the camera again to check the screen.
...Only to find that while her face was perfectly in frame, the only visible parts of Soseki were his arms and shoulders. Well, there was only one solution to this.
âKiki, how about you try crouching down this time?â Â

@eelyricebowl | Peacock PaloozaÂ
It was amazing how different the world seemed through a lens! Maya walked the trail up Echo Villageâs mountain, camera pressed to her face. Zoom in, zoom out. Zoom in, zoom out. Oh, a ladybug! Maybe she shouldâno. Focus, Maya. Now, if she were a peacock, where would she be hiding?
âSoseki, I see it!â The sound of a shutter clicking in rapid succession filled the air. She did it! She photographed the--! Oops.
âFalse alarm! It was just another robin~â Maya grinned sheepishly as she returned to Sosekiâs side, facing the cameraâs digital screen toward him.
âNo peacock yet! But...â The button beeped as she switched through the photos, each one her handiwork. âWe got a picture of this twig! And this cute little bunny. A robin, another robin, oh! Wait, is this..? No, that oneâs just my hand. But hereâs the rock thatâs shaped like Dr. Klausâ head! I forgot about that one!â Maya laughed as she looked up at Soseki.
âLetâs make a really pretty frame and put that picture inside it for his birthday present!â
@yamletteâ || Beach Fun !
The immediate wordsââ Ya- hoo ! ââ were followed only seconds later by a single, gigantic s p l a s h as he jumped from the nearby rocks into the deep, blue water that engulfed him the moment he landed. Any warnings that had been told to him beforehand had been completely forgotten as he rose back up to the surface, mercilessly shaking his head to get rid of any water that mightâve threatened to enter his eyes.
â Câmon Maya ! That was super extreme, wasnât it ?! You go give it a try too ! â Luke loudly stated as he swam to where his friend was waiting for him, hope && glee-filled eyes staring impatiently at her, â â itâs tons of fun, I promise ! â
Droplets of water glittered as they flew through the air. There was nowhere on the dock for Maya to take cover before they landed on her exposed skin.
âEek! Oh my gosh itâs so cold!â Her cheeks flushed as she bounced from foot to foot, toes curling with each hop. Fortunately, the summer sun warmed her quickly enough. Just in time for a blue head to surface again and fling even more water at herâmuch like a wet dog shaking out its fur.
âLuuuke!â Maya squealed with laughter. She raised her hands in vain attempt to block the spray, but at his coaxing she finally turned back and smiled.
âOkay, okay!â Maya took a deep breath, her cheeks puffing out as she held it. Pinching her nose, she jumped off the dock feet-first. The chill of the ocean seemed to shock her entire body. Maya stayed down for as long as she could before her head bobbed up again with a gasp.
âI bet I made a bigger splash then you!â she challenged. Her grin seemed almost comically evil with the short tips of her hair sticking to her face like a mustache.

Maya's hand was already lifted in mid-wave when Luke fell flat on his face. It happened so fast, she had to stare for a few moments before realizing what happened. "Oh my gosh!" she squeaked. It was a good thing Maya wasn't carrying anything, because she probably would have dropped it at that point. Rushing to his side, she grabbed his shoulder to help pull him up into a sitting position. Maya crouched beside him and used her other palm to brush off his chest as best she could. "What happened?! What did you fall on?! How--" About a hundred questions flew from her mouth--impressive, considering she seemed to be asking them all in one breath. No matter how many times Maya saw Luke fall, her reaction was always the same. Face pink with worry, she finally calmed down enough to leave room for an answer. "Are you okay?!"

Soseki avoided the letter this time by scooting around the corner of the kotatsu and towards Maya. âReally? Cause I think the best prize is getting to spend time with you. Besides, I need to relax and have inspiration before I can go back to work.â It was true. He nodded sagely while taking another sip of his hot chocolate.Â
This was his ideal afternoon. Next to Maya, spending time with her, maybe reading. He wouldnât be opposed to going out either. There were a bunch of interesting rumors to follow up on in the area and beautiful sites to see. Heâd love to see them all with Maya.
âIf you want to know whatâs in the envelope, why donât you open it? Iâve had enough surprises to last me a lifetime.â And then some.Â
"It's not really a 'prize' if you can spend time with me whenever you want," Maya replied with a laugh. Well, whenever they were visiting each other, to be more accurate. She turned the envelop over in her hand, trying to picture what would be inside. Hm, if it were very important, that would mean it had to be super heavy, right? To her, it felt of about average weight. She tucked her finger under the corner fold of the flap and attempted to make a clean tear. Despite her best efforts, by the time she got toward the center, the tear had spread off course. It became increasingly difficult to move her finger due to the paper bunching up. "Ow!" And of course, on the inside of her index finger, a paper cut. It stung, but a battle wound like that was not enough to stop her. Pouting, Maya forgot about any civilized attempt at getting the envelop open and just tore into it like a Christmas present. After a good few shreds, she finally pulled the letter out, holding it with triumph. "Hah!" She slammed it down on the table flat, looking at Soseki with a proud smirk. In the end, it felt like a prize after all.

â T-Thatâs a really pretty seashellâŚy-you have there⌠â
Maya glanced up, surprised to see another girl near her.
âIsnât it~?â The corners of her mouth lifted into a smile as she raised the horse conch higher. A lovely shell that almost seemed painted with pastel yellows and pinks, it was rather big compared to the tiny coin-sized ones Maya usually found.
âSomeone told me that you can hear the ocean in it, but...â Her eyebrows came together in a small frown. Sheâd been listening for the sound of the sea for the last few minutes, but only in vain. Maya shook her head, quickly lifting the conch to the girlâs ear instead.Â
âHere, you try listening to it.â She watched her face curiously. âCan you hear anything?â Â
âThe only thing clouding my judgement is hunger.â

âWhoops, sorry.â He said as a response to her accusation, pointedly looking away from her glare before reaching up to scratch at the back of his head. âDidnât mean to do that.â Although he stopped as soon as she replied to what he had said, taking a second to stare at her before grinning.
âAlright then! Weâd better hurry up!â It was legit enough for him, he had never used measurements to begin with. His way to measure things was more extreme. It included more gesturing than anything but Maya needed a couple of pounds. Therefore that probably meant she needed a lot, right?
However, he was forbid from heading on head-first into the forest by a few simple words. Luke frowned at her words, âI guess? â Was this a secret? He was happy to be able to be part of it, if that were the case, but why him?? Surely Maya knew he wasnât good at keeping secrets, right???
All of that train of thinking stopped the moment he was pulled down, and had the âsecretâ whispered in his ear. The moment she let go, the carpenter stood back up, giving her the most confused (and maybe slightly amused) expression he could master.Â
âWitch? Maya trust me, thereâs no witch in here. Iâve been tons of times and have never seen a single thing.â Wait no, that wasnât true. He had seen something, a small hut in the middle of a pond. But there was absolute no way that couldâve been the witch Maya was talking about. The woman that lived in there was pretty, and witches were supposed to be ugly and scary.
With a grin, he shook the whole conversation off, grabbing her arm and pulling her the opposite way led to the pond, âForget about that, letâs go get some firewood!â
"What--? No, Luke, you don't understand!"Â
Maya could do nothing but glance over her shoulder as Luke dragged her away, watching as her axe became smaller and smaller in the distance. Ah well, it's not like she actually needed it. What was more frustrating was how easily Luke managed to take her arm. Since when was he so big?! More importantly, since when did Maya forget to notice how tall he was getting? He was supposed to wait for her to catch up!
"Luke," she said, pulling her arm away and planting her feet stubbornly in the ground.
"What you need to realize here is that I," Maya put her palm over her chest to indicate to herself, "am a lady now. That means a lot of things. Two of those things are: one, you don't grab my arm suddenly, and two, when I say there might be a witch, we investigate."Â
Three, he should kneel down a little bit so she wouldn't have to look up at him when she talked, but Maya left this part out. It was really nice of her to go easy on him and not overwhelm him with too many new rules at once.
"C'mon, please~?" Maya's voice softened a bit, and she gave him a small smile. "I mean, wouldn't it be fun to explore a little? I almost never get to come into the woods."Â
Scratch the almost. This would likely be her first and only time to actually see the inside of Fugue Forest. Remembering this, Maya craned her neck up again to take in those towering trees, and anything else the area had to offer. If Luke would insist on not letting her look around, well... He was pretty one-tracked. Maybe they could find a nice, thick tree together to keep his attention, and she could slip away and return before he even noticed! Â

@yamletteâ â¤âd for a starter with the Harvest Goddess!
The Harvest Goddess had received many prayers regarding the new year, visitors coming to her spring amidst their preparations for the coming celebration, and she was delighted that their prayers would not go without answer this year. Her power and the land were restored, leaving her able to bless the coming year.
âHave you something you wish to ask of me?â
The beauty surrounding the Goddess Tree never failed to awe Maya. The wet stone walls, the gentle sound of rushing water, the cool ocean breeze... It almost seemed like a different world, one where troubles and worries couldn't follow her. The silence here held a century's worth of secrets, but it didn't make her nervous at all. It was welcoming.Â
Maya stood in front of the Goddess, bowing her head slightly as she fiddled with the hem of her dress.Â
"N-No... I mean, yes, but um..." How awkward. Maya didn't come here alone when she visited, or come to the springs often at all. She used to visit more when she was younger, usually in tow of her grandmother. But coming all the way to the mining district, and then have to walk through a trail in the forest... it was no easy task for someone who was aging. These days Yolanda just prayed to the bells like most people.Â
"I wanted to wish you a Happy New Year," she said, shifting her gaze. "And um, I hope you take care of us again this year. Maybe if my grandma's health keeps up, she can visit you in person again soon." Maya finally glanced up, unable to suppress the hopeful expression on her face. Â
âWell whaddya know⌠Those would look mighty fine - but, maybe you should practice with the coffee and not the paper? I bet if ya did, youâd be perfect in no time.â
He didnât want to be TOO rude about it, because really they didnât look too good on paper at all⌠of course, he chalked that up to her being excited and in a rush to show off her ideas. He loved that about people - He took a closer look at them, and tried to picture them on the top of a cup of coffee and, they wouldnât be so bad.Â
âMaybe jusâ somethinâ simple? Flowers, hearts, dogs maybe? â
Dogs? Maya looked down at the man's coffee and tried to imagine a puppy in it. Fitting four legs, two ears, and an adorable wagging tail into one cup was kind of hard...Â
"Um, drawing puppies in the foam still seems kind of advanced for me..." she admitted with a sheepish smile. "But you're right! Totally right! Practicing in actual coffee would be better..." At this she seemed to deflate slightly, her shoulders drooping.Â
"The thing is, not a lot of people order coffee around here. And when they want drinks, they usually go to the bar." Which was a shame, because beverages (like making hot chocolate from powder or putting ingredients in a blender) happened to be one of the very few culinary activities Maya was decent at.Â
"I don't get a lot of chances to practice on real foam."
