do you identify LGBT? i don't personally know many people in the herp community who identify as LGBT and tbh that makes me sad....

To use political metaphors (since it is election season) I am a card carrying member of the huge-flaming-lesbian party haha. My lovely girlfriend @newts-in-hats is also a reptile/amphibian keeper and a lesbian. I haven’t met many other LGBT+ herp people in real life (i agree, it is sad and disappointing), but there are quite a few on reptiblr.

Yesterday I found mites on Mishka’s enclosure, so now he’s back to the smaller plastic enclosure while we get rid of the infestation.

I never had to deal with mites before. I did some research, though, and I hope to do things right >__<

Do all you folks outside of Australia need a license to keep reptiles? I know it’s mostly fishblr people that follow this blog, but I’m sure there’s a few reptile lovers out there.

Nah not as far as I’m aware. You absolutley must for hots though obviously. And I THINK some states require documentation of the bigger species?

At any rate, I know there’s legislation in certain states banning the ownership of certain species and morphs therein. Like corn snakes for example. I believe in Georgia you can’t have corn snakes shipped in and in New Jersey there’s a limit to the morphs you can actually have…

We don’t in the UK. Just need your DWAL (Dangerous Wild Animals Licence) to keep venomous, crocs etc.

No license here (in in the U.S.) unless you want to keep hots or illegals. Then you need an education permit or something of the like. There are laws restricting animals state to state though.

In Florida, there are only laws for specifics, like venomous and conditional reptiles(big ones). That permit is only for education, breeding, or research, so like I couldn’t just get a burm one day as a pet.

There are federal, state, and city laws governing the keeping of herps in the US. The rules vary from state to state and city to city.

In TX, a Controlled Exotic Snake permit (recreational or commercial) is required for the keeping and selling of giants (African rock python, Asiatic rock python, green anaconda, reticulated python, and southern African python). You need to have a TX DL and not have committed any wildlife violation in the past five years. If using the commercial permit, you need to be keeping records of all snakes that come in and go out of your collection. You’re not required to submit the records but you are required to have them on hand in the event of a game warden inspection.

You need a Controlled Exotic Snake permit to keep and sell non-native venomous, same stipulations as above. No permit is necessary for keeping native venomous.

You need a valid hunting license and Reptile and Amphibian stamp to collect natives (venomous and non-venomous). If you intend to keep over a certain number of a species or engage in commercial purposes with what you collect, you are required to have a Nongame permit. You can only sell species on the white list and there are rules for that too. (See the White List here, Black List here)

Protected species are exempt from collection and are illegal to collect from the wild.

And then you need an educational permit to do the education thing, a rehab permit to do the rescue thing, etc.

Here in Brazil the commercialization and breeding of exotic (non-native) reptiles is illegal. Brazilians are allowed to have some of the native species, as long as they come from licensed breeders. When someone buys a reptile from an authorized seller, they come with a licence telling that pet belongs to you and that you now have authorization to keep it. You can resell the reptile to someone else, too, but you need to go to a registry office to transfer the license to whoever is buying it. There’s only one snake breeder who’s authorized to breed and sell snakes here, called Jibóias Brasil. They’re specialized in Boa Constrictor (BCC, BCA and BCO) and Epicrates (ECC, ECA, ECH), so these are the only reptiles we’re allowed to buy at this moment. There were other licensed breeders in the past, so there’s a few people with licensed tegus and iguanas as pets, as well as some tree boas (Corallus Caninus and Corallus Hortulanus).
