I am learning to imagine the future:
My sycamore tree began life in the gravel at the edge of a parking lot. If trees can feel pain, that is a painful, unlucky death. I carefully dug it up and put it in a pot I made out of a disposable cup.
Hello small one. This world may be cruel, but I will not be.
I decided to take care of it, not expecting it to survive, and when my sycamore tree unfurled one tiny leaf and then another, it chiseled a tiny foothold in my terrified brain, the kind of brain that doesn't remember a world before the atomic bomb and before 9/11.
I googled the lifespans of trees. My neurons had to stretch and expand to accommodate what I learned: My sycamore tree may live five hundred years. It's hard to think something so big. In twenty years, my baby sycamore tree will be three stories tall, and the home of many creatures. In five years, my sycamore tree will be taller than I am. In one year, it will be summer.
There's this concept called sense of foreshortened future where people who have lived through trauma can't conceptualize a future for themselves because deep down they don't expect to survive, When I look forward, all I see is fire and death, melting ice and burning sky. We were raised Evangelical. All we see is Judgment Day, except there is no heaven.
But now there is a tiny gap in the wall, a crack in the door of my cell
and on the other side, I see a tree
There is, in the future, a great old sycamore tree, full of clean winds and the stir of a thousand wings. A hundred years from now. Fifty years from now. There will be forests in that world. There will be a world.
It takes courage, but we have to imagine it.
Most tree species can live in excess of three or four hundred years. I think I'm learning something. I think there are ancient voices saying hello small one, touch the dirt and the leaves, for now you are part of something that cannot die
in 2030 I will be thirty years old and the world will not have ended and there will still be hummingbirds, and we will have photos of the stars more beautiful than we can now imagine.
I planted an Eastern Redcedar; they may live nine hundred years. There will be nine hundred years. The people in that time will remember us. Maybe we will meet the aliens (hi aliens!).
I will blow out the candles on many birthday cakes in a world where there are wolves in dark forests far from home. I am learning to imagine the future. I learned recently that elk were reintroduced to the Appalachian Mountains after over a hundred years of extirpation, and that they are expanding their range.
That tiny crack I can see through now opens a tiny bit more:
Maybe elk will pass through my hometown, maybe there will be a forest where the pasture is on the high hill that I can see from my home
say it, say it, say it: ten years, thirty years, a hundred years from now
I am learning to imagine the future. There is a crack in the wall of this prison, of this machine, of this darkness, and through it, I see a tree.

The whole concept of migraine triggers is just perfectly suited for making disabled people who are already suffering waste time & energy obsessing over every single thing they do every day, especially their diets, and to then blame themselves for their attack like their problem is a lack of discipline & willpower and not the fact that they have a chronic illness. If you get migraines, that isn't because your lifestyle & diet isn't sufficiently optimized, it's because you have a migraine disorder.
My neurologist didn't waste any time trying to get me to identify triggers and just got me on the right meds as soon as she could and I'm so glad she never made me feel like it was somehow my fault.
I'm now finally on a preventative that works for me & I literally don't do anything differently but I went from having daily migraines to sometimes not having a single one for over a week. I could do & consume every supposed trigger & still not get a migraine, when before the medication, I could do everything "right" every day for a week & still get a migraine every single day.
It's always like it's a medical disorder that causes your body to react badly to certain normal daily things & the goal should be to make it do that less, not to find ways to totally avoid all those normal daily things.
Yeah...they're caused by migraine disorders. Because people without them don't get migraines on a regular basis.
The chocolate advice is probably bullshit too. Unless you specifically identify it as something that makes your migraines worse (unlikely), it's way more likely to just be a common craving people have during the prodrome phase before the pain starts. If it's your body signaling you that it wants chocolate, there's no reason not to eat it.
Also, my neurologist said if you take triptans, take them during the headache phase immediately when it starts, not during the aura.
This isn't just my opinion btw, it's the current state of migraine research that shows that a) evidence for the belief that specific foods can trigger an entire migraine in someone who would've otherwise not had it is just not there and b) people are prone to misidentifying "triggers" and c) some "common triggers" have been shown in research to have protective qualities against migraines in some people and finally, d) the most up to date approach is to, instead of chasing possible triggers, raise your migraine threshold, which for some people can be achieved only with medication, but stuff like exercise & a nutritious diet could possibly also help you become more resistant too, once your threshold has been raised enough that you have the spoons for it, that is.

One study compared headache activity between two groups of people living with migraine while they followed different diets. One diet eliminated foods commonly thought to trigger migraine attacks, and the other diet required patients to eat those same foods. Interestingly, headache frequency improved on both diets. This suggests that particular foods are not likely to trigger an attack, but rather that following a consistent, healthy diet may itself be therapeutic. In other words, feeling that you have control over your headaches may improve your headache symptoms. It also suggests that no single food is a trigger for all people living with migraine.

If you're a chronic migraine haver please please learn to ignore all of that. There's always going to be people claiming that doing keto/paleo/gluten-free or cutting out seed oils/sugar/MSG and taking 15 different supplements cured their chronic illness and migraine is much the same. I'm not saying they're lying, they can absolutely believe that's what happened but it doesn't mean any of that is going to work for you nor do you have to try it.
I had some of my worst most painful headaches while on strong painkillers, at the hospital, eating only bland low sodium vegan hospital food and getting fluids straight into my veins because apparently, the stress of surgery & recovery made my migraine disorder worse. Despite me being on Emgality. That's just what being chronically ill is like sometimes, there's not much you can do. Some of us can't self-optimize ourselves out of it, despite what every armchair neurologist & dietitian seems to think.
Sometimes the stress of constant headaches & migraines is what's causing your migraines because it's an evil disorder.
i feel so defensive and protective of people with ARFID like if i had a disorder that made my brain register 90% of food as poison for no reason and i had a bazillion people on the internet constantly calling me a manchild who needs to just grow up and stop being a picky eater i would start killing people
people with ARFID and people with very few autism safe foods and people with contamination OCD and people in ED recovery and everyone else with a complicated relationship with food that no one takes seriously GET BEHIND ME!!!!!!!

So this is not a plea for money. This is something that surprised me, and chatting with people on discord, they were unaware of as well.
Discovered last year I couldnβt look at my 2015 MacBook Air without it triggering nausea and migraines, and figured the screen died. Have been getting by on my phone, but concluded I really need a laptop again.
Saved up, realised I could afford a brand new MacBook Neo, and got one.
-And I couldnβt spend more than five minutes looking at the screen without massive eye strain, nausea, vertigo, and if I pushed it, I-need-to-lie-down-in-a-dark-room-for-hours migraines.
Looking up MacBook and Eyestrain explained what is going on. The liquid retina displays that Apple currently has uses Pulse Width Modulation or PWM. In order to give the screens a deeper depth of colour and contrast, PWM flickers between several hundred to thousand times a second.
And there is currently no way to turn it off. There are settings and apps to reduce it, but there is no way to stop the screen from flickering. Checked Apple forums, called Apple Support, and the time I could look at the screen kept shrinking. Got the laptop Tuesday, returned it Friday, today is Sunday and Iβm still dealing with a vertigo migraine.
For MacBooks, it seems to vary on the computer model and the software it uses. In retrospect, the issue with my MacBook Air started after a major software update.
And itβs not just an Apple thing. Current Windows and Android screens do the same thing. Thereβs even a Reddit for people who are sensitive to PWM flickers to help find computers and screens that wonβt trigger eyestrain and headaches.
So, yeah. This week has been a learning experience. But for those who are prone to headaches and migraines, this may be something to be aware of, cause I was not.
