Heated Rivalry x Stages of Falling in Love (in/sp) ↳ EPISODE ONE: ROOKIES (DIR. JACOB TIERNEY)
"In a romantic comedy, falling in love involves a bumbling heroine and dashing male lead wooing one another in less than two hours, sassy montage included. In real life, the process is much more complicated and actually consists of five separate stages ranging from butterflies to stability, according to research done by eHarmony U.K."

your honor he's in love
The use of dramatic irony in Heated Rivalry is top notch. The way the hockey commentators are completely wrong about what they think they are watching, the internet chatter is completely wrong (about Shane and Rose), the tv people are completely wrong, Shane’s parents are clueless, his teammates are clueless, everybody who is on the outside looking in is completely wrong about Shane and Ilya. Only the viewers who have seen the minutia of their interactions and texts over the years know the real deal. We even know more than Shane and Ilya do because we are the only ones who have seen it all in close-up from both sides. We know what Ilya said in Russian on that phone call. Shane doesn’t. We saw Shane’s face when Ilya won the cup. Ilya didn’t. We saw Shane type and slowly delete “we didn’t even kiss”. Nobody else saw that. Only the viewers. That’s some powerful dramatic irony. Skilfully deployed.
yes!!! and even outside of their relationship, I love the juxtaposition between what we see and how they're perceived by people around them. It's just too good!! Two minutes into ep1 they're introduced as Shane Hollander (not the most sociable, but highest hockey IQ) and Ilya Rozanov (asshole, but a strong player) and that's who they are to most people for the next 9 years. And then these preconceived notions are slowly dismantled as their story progresses.
