âOnly sometimes.â She finally let her gaze slip from the other. In the back of her mind she could feel herself relax. The other was clearly too nervous to be a threat, and there was something about the woman that made her inclined to trust her. Whether that got her ass handed to her or not sheâd have to wait and find out. âThankfully the galaxy only needs saving every once in a while.â
Snorting, the commander stuck her hand back into her pocket and tilted her head up to the look at the sniper. âAs long as you donât mention my constant need for a step ladder, or use my head as an arm rest I promise not to consider biting your head off. Once the jokes start then weâll need to have another talk.â
âWould have never considered that to be true. Seems like somethinâs always goinâ wrong, wherever I look.â Bec chuckled. Seemed to always be the case she noticed.Â
She grinned, looking down at the commander from the corner of her eye. âWill do, commander.â Bec replied. Knowing how things usually went for her, sheâd be the one carrying the step ladder for Shepard. âWouldnâ dream of it. Iâve seen what its like to be on your bad side, on the news.â

Albert kept running, occasionally ducking behind cover and darting out again as Lombard did the same. Lombard ducked into the undergrowth once more as Albert approached. Out of thermal clips. The admiral left the gun and turned leftwards, further into the forest.
Albert could see him whizzing off in a new direction into the swamp lands. He looked back, sighting Bec after them in the distance in the open. The salarians seemed to still be back at the balcony dealing with that other Cerberus forces. The jungle was getting thinker. Dense and muggy. Albert was used to the outdoors, though. Years of survival training paying off. This might actually be good for him.
He turned rightwards instead; vanishing silently into the weeds.
Bec shouldered her gun, running into the thickness of the forest and trying her best to keep an eye out for Albert and the Admiral. Except, the trees were too dense and she quickly lost sight of where the detective went. She slowed to a stop, huffing as she glanced around the trees.Â
She spotted a gun on the ground, eyeing it for a moment. âBastard.â It was the Admiralâs, so he was out of clips. She glanced around. She couldnât tell which direction the admiral would have headed.... her worst trait, outdoor survival.Â
She turned left, hoping to trust her instincts, at least the ass didnât have a gun.

âNo problem Bec, anytime you wanna talk, you know where to find me.â said Joker.
Kay nodded, smiling, then lead the way out of the cockpit. She headed towards the ânoseâ of the ship where the galaxy map was. Zaeed, Nel, and Fred (aka Blasto) were waiting there, along with Garrus, in a bare, darkened room.
âOkay,â said Kay, stepping forward. The galaxy map sprang to life around them, a three-dimensional model that was projected through the space. It was not only accurate, but breathtakingly beautiful, the stars winking like diamonds, the planets like so many rubies and sapphires.
Kay walked through it towards a galaxy. âThis is the Knossos system,â she touched it, and they zoomed in. She touched a planet, and they zoomed in closer, able to see the continents and weather patterns.
âAnd this is Zakros. The mercenary outpost is somewhere here.â she circled an island of the coast of one of the larger continents, and it lit up, pulsing with a soft glow.
âThe island is relatively small, but we still need to narrow down where they might be. I want a way to pinpoint exactly where they are. That way we can drop right down on their heads.â
She looked around at the team. âAny suggestions?â
Bec took a step towards the holographic galaxy, eyeing the planet as Shepard proceeded to zoom in on the destination. Small island, they had to figure out exactly where they would be. Its a island, it was automatic that they would be on the shore line for water access.Â
âMight not be able to even do that.â She absentmindedly rubbed her chin as she eyed the hologram. âWhat are the chances the base is underground?â

The quarian chuckled softly and tried to relax âYeah good thing I did.â She said looking at her
âSo...â Bec hesitated, keeping her eyes on her hands instead. âSo how you been? Work good? I mean, ainât screwed up anythinâ with Aria again have ya?â

âWas wonderinâ when youâd get here.â Bec grinned, grasping Rilaâs hand, entwining their fingers before she leaned down a pressed a kiss to the asariâs cheek.
âThe wonderful benefits of technology.â Rila flashed a smile of her own, one that slowly faded with Becâs words. âWeâll make this work, one way or another.â The thought had her look down, eyes picked out the details in the tank top Bec wore.
âRegular people?â She couldnât help but laugh at the thought. âI gave up on that over a century ago,â the asari raised her free hand, brought it up to lay on Becâs face. âIt doesnât have to be wishful.. Iâm sure thereâs things we can do that wonât ultimately lead to our demise.â
She paused, bit her lip as he nodded, âIâll let you know the same. Our time approaches anyway, to stretch our legs in a new place. Can only be somewhere for so long before people start connecting the dots.â
Rila dropped her hand, let her elbow go slack in Becâs hand. âI should probably have that talk with Morinth sooner rather than later.â She looked to the floor a moment before her eyes raised to meet the womanâs, grin plastered on her face. âKiss for good luck?â
There was a peace that had settled between them, although Bec knew the consequences of them being together. The risks that could happen, the fact that they were both killers in their own right. It didnât matter, she wanted nothing more than to remain there, with Rilaâs hand pressed against her cheek.Â
âYeah. We could go out and enjoy some grilled donuts.â Bec smiled, recalling the day that they went out for breakfast, just the two of them. âWeâll keep in contact if anythinâ like that happens.â
Bec nodded, her eyes looking down as she remembered Rila still needed to talk with her sister. It was only a matter of time before the asari had to leave. Although Rilaâs next words brought a smile back to Becâs face, Rilaâs request too adorable for Bec to pass up.  âAlways.â She replied, bending down to press a kiss to Rilaâs lips. âGood luck.â

âAwkward, nostalgic, and strange, a typical day with the Commander.â Joker quipped, giving her a smile. âAs for the team thing, youâll get over it. We got a lot of lone wolves on the Normandy, and they pull together for missions, do their own thing when theyâre not.â
He was interrupted by Kay knocking on the wall of the cockpit.
âHope Iâm not interrupting?â she said, and Joker shook his head. âNah, just finishing up.â
âIn that case, I need my sniper.â said Kay. âHope things worked out?â
Joker snorted, flushing slightly. âOh my God Shepard, what are you, my mom? Weâre fine, Iâm fine, please stop embarrassing me.â
Kay walked over and gently tweaked the brim of his cap, smiling. âDrink your milk and eat your veggies.â
Joker stuck his tongue out at her impishly as Kay turned to Bec. âWeâre going to go over the mission by the galaxy map, if you wanna join us.â
âI hope so. At this rate, Iâll keep makinâ myself look like an idiot. Already did that to you, twice, if you ask me.â Bec gave him a small tired smile. She was hoping sheâd get use to it, but at the same time she knew it was only a matter of time before she was back to being a lone wolf.
Bec turned, seeing Shepard join them in the cockpit. She nodded at the commander, greeting her. âYeah, Iâll join you.â She stepped towards Kay, taking a moment to glance back at Joker and nod at him. âThanks for talkinâ to me, Joker. I appreciate... what you said.â
She turned back to Shepard, nodding at her to lead the way. âShall we?â
Sid shrugs. âBasically. In laymans terms. Iâve never really worried about what I am. At least, not defining it.â
She tosses her head and laughs at Becâs question. âNot so much teenage days, more likeâŚ.Trying-to-throw-my-life-away-because-my-people-are-lost-forever kind of days.â She gives another shrug; sheâs come to accept that sheâs the last of her kind. âBut yes, I have my act together. I only get into trouble when Iâm not on duty.â She winks. âSo as soon as weâre back here, Iâm probably going to go challenge a krogan to some sort of stupid pain-endurance test because they get a kick out of âhumansâ being able toâŚ.how do they put it? Have the quad to do something.â She snickers. âAnd I was never the one for sneaking and pickpocketing. I did the really dumb stuff.â
Sidearg gives a wry smile. âSurprisingly not. I find myself most at home with the asariâthough Iâve yet to be able to change my skin blueâand Iâve made some friends amongst some wonderful asari on the Citadel. Theyâre also the mostâŚaccepting of me. At least, those who know what I am.â She shakes her head. âIâm not great with keeping my secret, but Iâm very good at finding people who are trustworthy.â
âAh, those days. Sounds a lot like a humanâs trying-to-throw-my-life-away-because-no-one-gets-me kind of days.â Bec chuckled, resting her head in the palm of her hand. âSad I didnâ catch you while you were off duty.â Her eyes went wide and she lifted her head up, surprised. âI mean wait I...... I donâ know what I mean by that, sorry.â She shook her head, unsure of what she was trying to say, whether or not it was her accidentally flirting or just not making sense, as usual.
She nodded, not surprised by that statement. âI mean, they probably live as long as you, right? Makes sense that they would be most acceptinâ.â She chuckled at Sidâs last comment, shaking her head at it. âMe? You tryinâ to say Iâm trustworthy?â

Joker smirked. âFlying is just falling with style. All you have to do is learn to avoid the ground and youâre halfway there.â
He gave her a shrewd look. âIâm guessingâŚ..this is all kinda weird? Going from some kinda black ops babe to getting adopted by Commander Shepard.â
He grimaced. âAnd getting fawned over by Aria Tâloak, not so great. Sheâs like a shark in a meat suit.â
Cocking his head, he looked up at her. âYou dealing with this okay? I mean, itâs been a lot to take in.â
Bec grinned lightly. âThatâs an⌠interestinâ way of puttinâ it.â The idea made her chuckle. Learn to avoid the ground and youâre halfway there. She was good at hitting the ground.Â
âWeird?â Her head perked up at the notion, one brow cocking up. âNo, not exactly. Not really weird as just... awkward. Anâ its not about beinâ taken in by Shepard either. These kinds of missions Iâm pretty use to.â She paused, rubbing the back of her neck. âIts more so, beinâ around people. Iâm use to workinâ on my own. It feels strange to be around a crew more like.â
She turned her head to the side, not really wanting to think of Ariaâs fawning. âIâm dealinâ with it, which is surprisinâ, since Iâm normally terrible at that.â She shrugged. âKinda brings me back to basic. Workinâ in a team again, weird things happeninâ. A little nostalgic, although strange to have again.â

Albert ducked down to Becâs level as the shots flew past him. The salarians fired back, only to miss as Lombard weaved past and leapt over the balcony with a flourish. Rentola also bent down to Bec; with quick thinking applying medi-gel as the other troops behind him feebly fired in Lombardâs direction.
As Lombard had ran past the distracted agents behind him, the effect of being stunned was doubled by him activating an overload module, frying the two salarianâs weapon systems.
Rentola started to try and drag Bec to her feet. âGet after him!â He shouted to the two other troops behind himself and Albert. Nonetheless they were much too focused on the previous distraction and distant fighting.
âCome one Bec! Itâs just a flesh wound.â Albert rallied. He quickly head to the balcony, leaving her behind briefly. Lombard had jumped onto a large tree below him, now climbing down to the forest floor. The firefight between STG and retreating Cerberus troops continued on the other balcony across the way. The other salarians, not sure what to focus on, started to try and help their comrades by setting up a sniping position and leaving Albert, Bec, and Rentola to deal with Lombard.
âFuck itâ, Albert thought, as he too leapt onto the tree and slid down the trunk.
Bec groaned, pushing the salarian off her as she stood up, still clutching her shoulder, the medi gel had helped stopped the bleeding at least, but unfortunately the bullet was still there. She grit her teeth as she grabbed her rifle off the ground and ran after Albert and Lombard.Â
She got as far as the edge of the balcony before she stopped, watching Albert slide down the trunk after the admiral. âThe fuck!â Bec waved her hand at the tree, annoyed that she had to get shot and climb down a tree in the the first few minutes of getting shot.Â
She quickly opened her omni-tool and slammed an adrenaline shot into her thigh. She shouldered her rifle and jumped for the tree, sliding down the trunk a few minutes behind Albert. She hit the forest floor, taking a knee as she held up her rifle, switching shoulders as she stared down the scope. She could see the admiral, but Albert was too close behind for a clear shot, with her bad side.Â
âDamn.â She stood back up, chasing after the two.
