It happened at work, and at first I didn’t think much of it.

I’ve always been someone who sneezes a lot. Not just a single sneeze here and there, but real sneezing fits that come out of nowhere and go on longer than they should. Most colleagues were used to it. Some laughed, some ignored it.

But there was one coworker who stood out.

Almost every time I had a sneezing fit in my office, she would appear shortly after. She’d knock lightly, smile, say “Bless you,” and then—without much hesitation—sit down. What struck me was that she didn’t immediately change the subject. Instead, she often commented on it.

“That sounded intense,” she’d say.

“Do you always sneeze like that?”

“How many times was that just now?”

At first I thought she was just being polite or curious. But it kept happening. The timing was too perfect, and the way she talked about it felt… focused. Observant. Interested.

One day, after another long sneezing fit and another visit from her, the conversation lingered longer than usual. There was a pause, a look, and on impulse I said something I hadn’t planned.

“You know,” I said casually, “I once heard about something called a sneeze fetish.”

The reaction was instant.

Her face changed—not shocked, not confused—but caught. Just for a second. Her eyes widened, she laughed a little too quickly, and then looked away. In that moment, I knew. I didn’t need her to say anything.

We were on duty - me and my colleague, small mid 20‘s blonde hair and sharp, nothing special going on, just driving through the city in the afternoon. The ventilation in the car was on, blowing that dry, recycled air straight through the cabin. She was sitting next to me — my colleague. Small, blond, athletic, always focused, always professional. The kind of person who usually has everything under control.

And then she sneezed.

Just one at first. Loud, sudden, completely breaking the calm in the car. She apologized quickly, like it was nothing, and I thought that would be the end of it.

But it wasn’t.

She sneezed again. And again. And again.

At some point it stopped being funny or random and turned into this long, intense sneezing fit that just wouldn’t let her go. Every time she tried to recover, every time she thought she was done, another sneeze came crashing out of her.

She was usually so composed, so controlled. But there she was, completely at the mercy of the air blowing through the car. Her shoulders tensing, her breathing catching, her head dipping forward again and again as the sneezes kept coming. Each one caught her off guard, and she looked more embarrassed with every round.

She kept apologizing, half-laughing, half-exhausted. Her face turned red, her eyes watered slightly, and she looked genuinely frustrated that she couldn’t stop it.

I remember gripping the steering wheel a little tighter, pretending to be fully focused on traffic, while inside I was very aware of every sound next to me. The sharp inhales. The split second of anticipation. The sneeze itself — powerful, uncontrollable, honest.

She adjusted the air vents, wiped her nose, tried to slow her breathing — none of it worked. The sneezes just kept coming. Long chains of them. One after another. Too many to count.

And every time I thought, Okay, now it’s over, another one came.

When it finally stopped, she looked completely worn out. She laughed it off, made a joke about the car hating her, and just like that, she was back to being herself again — professional, calm, in control.

For me I am someone who often has to sneeze several times in a row. I don’t have any mental barrier or fear about sneezing in front of other people. However, when a sneezing fit becomes very intense or lasts for a long time, it gradually starts to feel uncomfortable for me.

In those moments, I usually face a choice: I can sneeze loudly, which often helps the fit end sooner, or I can try to sneeze quietly. The problem is that when I suppress the sound and sneeze quietly, the sneezing fit usually lasts much longer and becomes more exhausting.
