Bronze Etruscan mirror with silver inlays, diameter ~17 cm (c. 500-470 BCE, found during archaeological excavations near Vulci, Tuscany, Italy).
The scene on the mirror's back side shows Eos (Aurora in Latin), the goddess of dawn, here depicted as a winged female with a nimbus, who has just kidnapped Kephalos (or Cephalus), the young hunter-hero, son of Hermes and Herse (he would eventually become her husband).
In the Etruscan pantheon she would be called Thesan, a deity who precedes, accompanies - or sometimes competes with - the rising Sun (Usil). The cult of this goddess was widespread among Etruscan tribes from the seventh century BCE.
Eos is a controversial figure in Greek mythology. She was known for her beauty, but then Aphrodite caught her in bed with her lover Ares and punished to be forever tormented with constant yet insatiable passion for young lovers. She would be able to have only very short, ephemeral affairs - quickly destroyed by her passion for the next lover.
A very interesting role model to depict on a mirror for young girls, if you ask me.
The mirror is in the collection of the Vatican Museums, but is not on public display.
Last light, Mary Mattingly
