they say there’s five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
D E N I A L-
crystal blue orbs starred at the wall in her therapists office; hands pressing against her knees, no concern on her face. generally she’d skip her appointments but if annie were here she’d ask her to go. so begrudgingly and for annie’s sake - she went. when he asked her how she’d been doing she told the truth. “well--- i’ve been pretty much throwing myself into new things. you know, i’ve been volunteering, babysitting, shopping at thrift stores--- i believe it’s because i’m trying to avoid my friends death? you know? as if it never really did happen?” it hadn’t been long, but the blonde did everything she could. avoiding things was the easiest way to get the thoughts out of her head. annie had been by far the closest person in stonefield. and yet, there was no room to even THINK that she had died. jess just put it on the back burner letting her new hobbies take over her life.
tugging at his glasses her therapists nodded, beginning to speak again, “you know grief does involve five stages?”
and so began her first look into the five stages of grieving. “see, here’s the thing, i haven’t really been grieving.” eyes were dead serious as she stared straight into her therapists orbs through his tacky wired glasses.
A N G E R-
red hot rage escaped jess as she sat on the couch which had different types of cloth on it, like patch work; all she wanted to do was destroy it. voice was harsh as she screamed the words she needed to say out loud. yelling at the man who sat across from her.
“how.” she stabbed the air with her index finger, “how could this have happened?” face was contorted as she stood up, pacing, face becoming different shades of red. “annie, she just----” she laughed, not because it was funny, but because her anger was becoming intense, “how could this have happened to her? to her? ANNIE? no--- she didn’t deserve that bullshit!”
small fists slammed into one of the pillows slowly; her whole body ached with rage each second she thought of it. “what happened where it couldn’t have been me instead of her?” each moment her voice began to shake worse than before. letting herself keep punching the pillows as the rage overwhelmed her body. furthering her decent into grieving.
B A R G A I N I N G-
sighing, jessica sat down, running a hand through her blonde hair. roots were beginning to show she wasn’t a natural blonde. chewing at her lip, she spoke, “what can i do?” face was serious, “what can i do?” shrugging, she tried to think of ways to fix this. “how can i make it better? you tell me---- i will do it, i mean, seriously! name everything and i will just--- do it!”
trying to reason with herself that she could do something, anything to change this fate for annie. she just kept going, “i mean there has to be something right? i can TOTALLY fix this!” nodding, jess felt overly confident about this.
D E P R E S S I ON-
slowly tears trickled down her cheeks which were blushed with pink. everything hurt as she tucked her legs under her, “i---” she spoke, trying not to sob so loud. except it was seriously impossible for her to even speak. continues sobs escaped her raspy throat as she blubbered to her therapist. “ i just can’t do it---” as she plucked another tissue from the box in front of her. there were a million wads of soaked tissues sitting next to her in a large pile.
it had been an hour since she started crying. it was impossible to function with these thoughts dancing through her subconscious. it felt like a claw was clenched onto her back, forcing her mood to decline further and further. a large dark cloud hanging over her head as her head sunk into the same pillow she’ punched. no words would come out after that just sobs and an infinite amount of tears. even her body began to shake because she couldn’t take all the feelings she needed to express.
A C C E P T A N C E-
a slight smile rose on her lips; things were clear, her eyes were no longer bloodshot, anger had subsided along with the depression. thinking of annie now wasn’t as painful as before. everything seemed crystal clear that the girl had made an impression on jessica. no one could replace what they had; no other friend would compare to annie, a presence like hers was one of a kind. jess knew this, she knew that annie would want her to be happy? everyday she would think of her friend and smile.
“i think that annie would want me to move on from this? start another journey?” nodding, jess smiled, orbs scanning the patch worked couch, “i believe she’d want to stop all this blubbering and to live my life? i’ll always miss her---- but i also have a life, if i can’t move on, how will i ever enjoy life? maybe if i start to have a life i can live for annie? i don’t know...”
it was still impossible to accept, but jess would take it one day at a time. “i loved annie like she was my sister! i will NEVER forget her. ever. but for now it’s time for me to make new memories---in her honor!”
