Something I learned today is that I've had the head of Automattic's Trust and Safety department blocked for a while.
Woke up at 4:30 AM convinced something terrible was happening and I had to get up and fix it, as I often do. Came out to the kitchen for a drink of water and discovered that Dupe Cat had opened the trash and removed a moldy hot dog, which he was chewing on in the middle of the floor while Bu watched thoughtfully, trying to decide whether to join in. Just this one time, my instincts were correct. I will never be able to get back to sleep again.

ORVSS has confirmed that the Christian god does not exist in ORV: when the angels need a god, they appoint a human to play the role temporarily and then die. Unclear whether it's always been this way, or Mitra or His Dark Materials or something happened in prehistory.

"The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" is an example of an unreliable narrator in Southern gothic literature.
I think Herman Melville should have appeared in Billy Bat.
Ambiguous “perk” of spending so much of my childhood hanging around a law office: occasional glimpses into just exactly how inaccurate “true crime” shows actually are.
me: Oh fuck I met that guy! He was a huge creep, why are they saying he “seemed like an ordinary person to his neighbors!” At least one of them called the cops on him, even! - Dad refused to represent him, I think it was partly because he was afraid to let him into the office again.
Mom, playing a game on her phone: Huh… oh, yeah, this was in [town] wasn’t it…
me: Did they somehow just not find out about [related crime]? It should have been right in the middle of all this stuff… Or are they just leaving out things he did so they can tell this story about the manipulative girl pressuring him into it?
Mom: Oh, probably, dear.
Categories of manga read recently:
Good at what it's doing, but what it's doing is not something I care to see done: Dandadan, Sakamoto Days, The Lies of Sheriff Evans
Could have been good if it were good: Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi, Yomi no Tsugai, Ichi the Witch
Kind of stupid, but good at pushing my personal buttons: Vanitas no Carte
Good enough that I don't think fuck-ups in future chapters will significantly lessen my appreciation of what's come so far: Witch Hat Atelier, Hand Jumper, Chiikawa
Good, but I may regret saying so once the next chapter comes out: Make the Exorcist Fall in Love
Could have been good if the initial concept had been handed off to a completely different writer, but instead rapidly went so bad it was insulting: The One Within the Villainess
Forgettable: Arslan Senki, From Bureaucrat to Villainess, several other villainess isekais whose titles I have actually already forgotten and I don't know why I keep reading these
Bad but conceptually-hilarious because it's an omegaverse CEO romance pretending not to be that in order to sell merch of the omega's cute animal friends: The S-Classes That I Raised

Yomi no Tsugai could have been good, but Arakawa has made the mistake of getting attached to the characters and settings personally without explaining to the audience why we should care. This starts in the very first chapter: the reader sees nothing of the protagonist's relationship with his sister or his role within the the village before the sister is revealed as a fraud and the villagers start getting massacred. The magnitude of what he's lost is described, perfunctorily, only after it's gone.
And this just keeps happening, over and over. Character who's had like five lines of dialog tries to kill someone, and afterwards we're told it's a massive and unexpected betrayal. Guy who we've seen do nothing but lie and bully kids dies, and afterwards we're told that he's supposed to be worth mourning. The house is destroyed, and this is clearly supposed to emotionally unmoor the cast and readers by destroying a symbol of stability - but it doesn't feel that way, because almost every scene there was people trying to kill each other.
It's too rushed to give the emotional beats time to land. The question of who to trust is meaningless because we don't know who these people are or what the stakes might be.
Remember the -i makuru/ 捲る construction. Do not forget this verb stem modifier. It's important. <- self-hypnosis
