           𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧  𝐜𝐫𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥  𝐰𝐞𝐧𝐭  𝐨𝐧  𝐡𝐞𝐫  𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭  lived  mission  of  revenge ,  nothing  was  easy .  she  was  new  to  hunting  and  taking  out  a  seemingly  developed  nest  proved  very  difficult .  nothing ,  however ,  was  as  difficult  as  seeing  the  crumpled  form  of  a  child  in  the  corner  of  the  room ,  cowering  out  of  sight .  she  couldn’t  be  older  than  ten .  it  took  a  while  to  earn  the  girls  trust  enough  to  approach ,  reasonably .  a  teenager  covered  in   blood   after  killing  those  around  you  wouldn’t  be  the  most  comforting  figure .  but  when  crystal  neared  the  girl ,  she  lunged  out ,  baring  her  fangs  and  latching  onto  the  flesh  of  crystal’s  arm .  the  hunter  let  the  stake  fall  from  her  hand  and  clatter  to  the  floor .  sure ,  the  pain  was  sudden  and  jarring ,  but  she  wasn’t  about  to  kill  a  child  for  following  her   instincts .  

            𝐬𝐡𝐞  𝐥𝐞𝐭  𝐭𝐡𝐞  𝐠𝐢𝐫𝐥  𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝  𝐟𝐨𝐫  𝐚  𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞 ,  before  gently  caressing  her  matted  hair  and  asking   ( in  a  very  polite  manner )  for  her  arm  to  be  released .  surprisingly ,  it  was .  the  two  sat  there  in  silence  for  a  moment ,  now  both  covered  in  blood .   “  i  should  prob'ly  go  fix  this  up ,  huh ?  you  wanna  come  with  me ? ”   the  girl  moved  back  an  inch ,  and  so  did  crystal ,  knowing  that  stranger  danger  is  very  real  and  it  might’ve  seemed   too  invasive .   but  she  couldn’t  just  leave  her  here .   she  wouldn’t .   there  were  bribes  that  followed ,  but  ultimately  it  was   honesty   that  caused  the  small  girl  to  reach  for  crystal’s  hand .  she  found  out  the  child’s  name  was  maria ,  and  she  was  taken  –  events  described  were   eerily  similar   to  crystal’s  experience .  upon  arrival  at  the  cabin ,  the  two  cleaned  up ,  ate ,  and  crystal  sat  nearby  as  maria  lay  fast  asleep  on  the  couch .

           𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚  𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐝  𝐟𝐨𝐫  𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲  𝐚  𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 ,  and  it  was  wonderful .  they  baked ,  they  fell  asleep  in  front  of  the  television  nightly ,  and  crys  was  happy  for  the  first  time  since  sarah’s  death .  during  this  time ,  the  hunter  was   researching .   looking  through  missing  person’s  files  and  trying  to  find  out  where  maria  came  from .  yes ,  crystal  enjoyed  the  company ,  but  she  knew  that  somewhere  out  there ,  maria  was  being  missed   dearly .   one  fateful  day ,  crystal  found  a  posting  about  a  missing  girl  and  maria’s  picture  was  attached .  that  night  was  emotional  for  both  of  them ,  knowing  their  time  together  as  this  sort  of   makeshift  family   has  come  to  an  end ,  but  maria  was  ecstatic  to  go  back  home .  they  left  the  next  day  at  the  crack  of  dawn  and  made  it  to  the  girl’s  hometown  by  nightfall .
