The clown class part is fun and silly yes but also I think a very important and healthy way to look at education. I went to college and got my associate’s in fine arts at a community college. I did not go to “get a degree for a job”. The elective arts classes I took were things like ceramics and jewelry-making—things I always wanted to try but could not do in my own home. I remember both so fondly. I did them because I wanted to learn them. Not because I had to, to satisfy a checklist that says I’m employable. It’s another reason why it’s a damned shame education is so expensive. People want to do well, want to help the world, and they want to learn new things.
