Captivating Beauty: Duckie Thot Shines in Vogue UK’s April 2019 Issue, Lensed by Nick Knight
Continuing with my scene paintings
A student once asked anthropologist Margaret Mead, “What is the earliest sign of civilization?” The student expected her to say a clay pot, a grinding stone, or maybe a weapon. Margaret Mead thought for a moment, then she said, “A healed femur.” A femur is the longest bone in the body, linking hip to knee. In societies without the benefits of modern medicine, it takes about six weeks of rest for a fractured femur to heal. A healed femur shows that someone cared for the injured person, did their hunting and gathering, stayed with them, and offered physical protection and human companionship until the injury could mend. Mead explained that where the law of the jungle—the survival of the fittest—rules, no healed femurs are found. The first sign of civilization is compassion, seen in a healed femur.

Fun fact! This is a Dmanisi skull from Georgia, another type of hominin to us.
Notice that jaw? When we lose our teeth, over time our jawbone heals the gaps, making it smooth, so when archaeologists discover skulls centuries later they can tell whether the tooth was lost after death (as the bone didn’t grow to cover the hole) or during the individual’s life.
The majority of this jaw has healed, so this person would have lived a number of years with basically no teeth. The age of this skull, according to wiki, is 1.8 million years.
This means that millions of years ago this person had a diet with soft, easy foods, and that others in the group would have known, understood, and helped by specialising their foraging for this one individual.
Or, in the words of my lecturer when we covered this, “Someone would have had to chew up this person’s food for them. Every day. Multiple times. For years.”
that one meme, the “you’re crying over ___?” one. With “an almost 2-million year old hominid skull” in the first picture, and “the evidence that we evolved to be compassionate and cooperative as a species” in the second one. I don’t have the energy to do it myself right now, so just… imagine it.
Normal people on Twitter are having an absolutely normal one over muppet babies letting gonzo wear a dress
The thing about the episode is that it didn’t even have an inherently trans meesage? Gonzo wanted to wear a dress to this ball they were having and he was scared he was gonna be made fun of so he disguises himself as Gonzorella so he can wear the dress and then the plot to Cinderella plays out like usual, and all the other muppet babies were like “we love you gonzo, we sorry we made you feel that way, we love you just the way you are”
The moral was literally the same “be yourself” stuff every kids media does, it’s just that involves a boy wearing a dress this time
“Manly muppets”
FOR FU–
Also, um… Gonzo is canonically nonbinary. Specifically, his gender is “whatever.” This is played as a gag, but like. It’s a canon fact about the character. (Muppets Take Manhattan, Muppet Treasure Island, and one of the later comic strips.) Gonzo is a nonbinary character who uses he/him pronouns.
@lytefoot if you don’t mind/if you happen to know how to find them do you mind sharing the clips or comic strip where this was? i’m really curious to see!!!
@drreidhjp I’d have to watch the movies through again to find the moment, but here’s the comic strip, published in 1986.

day by day i realise that nobody really cares for each other but themselves and that i am no different..
I realised that this is a very pessimistic and narcissistic view at large
please practice speaking to yourself in a gentle mental voice. many of us, especially those raised by overly critical caregivers, have developed the habit of speaking unkindly to ourselves in our own heads. this is yet another instance of learned behavior that has to be purposely unlearnt. a good way to start is to monitor your thoughts and the judgments you pass on yourself, and practice rewording them in more positive, supportive language. practice speaking to yourself as if to a child who needs love and kindness. because you do. you do need those things.
in a world as jumbled and harsh as this, you deserve at least to cradle yourself in your own gentle hands. you deserve people who treat you gently. and one of those people needs to be you.
wow you mean I’m, like, allowed to do this???
I think it is a wise and compassionate habit to pick up! And also that it takes a lot of courage. So yes, not only are you allowed, you are courageous and responsible for doing so!
In a world that profits from your misery, being tender to yourself and others is inherently an act of rebellion.
thinking about the casual intimacy of showing someone you love an unfinished work of art, the underlying message saying, i trust you with my unpolished heart
the second moot and oomf and noomf become part of the tumblr lexicon i’m jumping ship to linkedin or smth
Imagine shitposting on linkedin
Can you imagine? What would happen if there was a mass movement from Tumblr to Linkedin? With the business suit profiles, and all your degrees and credentials all professional and pretentious,
but instead of "bla bla bla, work achievement" the posts are all memes about worm on a string, and fandom discourse
Somehow i would like to see that happen...
A lot of people ask me what my biggest fear is, or what scares me most. And I know they expect an answer like heights, or closed spaces, or people dressed like animals, but how do I tell them that when I was 17 I took a class called Relationships For Life and I learned that most people fall out of love for the same reasons they fell in it. That their lover’s once endearing stubbornness has now become refusal to compromise and their one track mind is now immaturity and their bad habits that you once adored is now money down the drain. Their spontaneity becomes reckless and irresponsible and their feet up on your dash is no longer sexy, just another distraction in your busy life. Nothing saddens and scares me like the thought that I can become ugly to someone who once thought all the stars were in my eyes.
this fucks me up every single time
I never expected this to be my most popular poem out of the hundreds I’ve written. I was extremely bitter and sad when I wrote this and I left out the most beautiful part of that class.
After my teacher introduced us to this theory, she asked us, “is love a feeling? Or is it a choice?” We were all a bunch of teenagers. Naturally we said it was a feeling. She said that if we clung to that belief, we’d never have a lasting relationship of any sort.
She made us interview a dozen adults who were or had been married and we asked them about their marriages and why it lasted or why it failed. At the end, I asked every single person if love was an emotion or a choice.
Everybody said that it was a choice. It was a conscious commitment. It was something you choose to make work every day with a person who has chosen the same thing. They all said that at one point in their marriage, the “feeling of love” had vanished or faded and they weren’t happy. They said feelings are always changing and you cannot build something that will last on such a shaky foundation.
The married ones said that when things were bad, they chose to open the communication, chose to identify what broke and how to fix it, and chose to recreate something worth falling in love with.
The divorced ones said they chose to walk away.
Ever since that class, since that project, I never looked at relationships the same way. I understood why arranged marriages were successful. I discovered the difference in feelings and commitments. I’ve never gone for the person who makes my heart flutter or my head spin. I’ve chosen the people who were committed to choosing me, dedicated to finding something to adore even on the ugliest days.
I no longer fear the day someone who swore I was their universe can no longer see the stars in my eyes as long as they still choose to look until they find them again.
This is so fucking important and I think it’s something I needed right now
