Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā City never does change much if you leave, I heard. Even so, welcome back. Though I canāt exactly say this is a very warm welcome, considering our situation.Ā ā
<<Yeah, I suppose thereās really no good way to greet someone coming back to a disaster of a city like this, huh? Well, whatever. Staying home wasnāt much better of an option, if you catch my drift.>>
<<So... should I even bother asking whatās going on? Someone set up a weird base over in one of the sectors or did those scientists develop a weird taste in architecture?>>

<<Glad to see this place is just as much of a mess as it was last time I was around.>>
Then again, itās almost better than being a wanted criminal -- a shitty disguise will only get you so far when you and everyone you know is wanted far and wide back home.
ć His movements are sluggish, no sign of haste anywhere, but somehow he ends up ahead at some point. The guy hobbles like an old man, gaze occasionally sliding to his leg before back up again to gaze at something else. He doesnāt like, nor feel like, prying, despite the curiosity.
Chase waves off the apologies, back slightly hunched in a minor attempt to constantly make himself smaller. Cracks in the sidewalk pass, shoes dragging the pavement. It seems he cares little for the century-old paranoid saying, only realizing footsteps have stopped a little too late.
Thereās a grin on his face that, for a moment, looks more like someone carved it out of his face with a rusted knife than any genuine expression of amiability; then, as soon as it appeared, itās gone, replaced by the usual casual, hey-buddy-how-ya-doinā smile that fools most.
Not that it matters if this guy is fooled or not -- itās far too late for that to matter.
Petrel leans forward, elbows resting on his knees, for all the world acting like heās listening to some fascinating tale and not watching the curses and futile flails of an abducted man instead. It seems for a moment as though the guyās going to calm down, but no, he goes right on struggling, as if heās going to break solid iron cuffs. If anything, heās gonna end up with quite a few nasty bruises around those cuffs.
No, Petrel doesnāt interrupt him, snakes one hand down into a pocket for the ever-handy pack of cigarettes and lighter he keeps grouped in the same side -- at this point he can do the entire act one-handed anyway, heās so well-practiced at the art of destroying his lungs -- takes it all out and lights up as the guy continues to thrash about. The actions useless, heāll admit, but kid does get credit for trying in earnest.
A grin encircling his cigarette, an exhalation of smoke, the executive rises to his feet. Itās not a smooth motion in any sense of the word -- his hip hurts something fierce today, and itās only going to get worse from here -- but he manages to conceal his grimace and step right up to his target of choice. He has to bow a little bit, but now heās right at eye-level with Chase.
<<Hey, Iād save your voice if I were you. Personally, Iād like to get things moving, seeing as I donāt enjoy handing out punishments like this,>> -- a lie, at best -- <<but a job is a job. You shouldāve worked on running your mouth less and your feet more.>>
He pauses a moment, frown briefly crossing features, then that grin is back in place. He slips the cigarette ot of his mouth while straightening up, stretching his back, and lets his free hand come to rest on the other manās head. Itās a brief second of reprieve before he balls a hand in his hair and brings the cigarette, still lit, to hover but inches from one emerald green eye. Any closer and, well...
Protonās stupid remarks are enough to raise Goldās hackles ā but itās Petrelās almost-bored round of mocking that really does it for him. If looks could kill, then the resident smoker wouldāve been a bloody mess on the floor, torn up and discarded like the trash he really was.
āYou heard him, right?ā he says suddenly, words aimed at Silver but stare on Proton now, engaging, threatening. He still hasnāt stopped coming forward; by the time his feet hit critical space, that area between shit-talkĀ and fight, heās already pushed past it.Ā āHas something to do with me. Actually, sāgot a lotĀ to do with me ā and I mean. If weāre being nice nowā¦ā
Itās like heās got blinders on. He practically ignores Petrel as he gets in Protonās personal space, stopping just a foot away from him.Ā āI canāt just ignoreĀ āem. Right?ā
The pause is meaningless. He surges forward and grabs the ridiculous RĀ on the Rocketās chest, dragging Proton down to his level. The look in his eyes is dangerous.
ć The one gloved hand on Protonās hips curls itās fingers slowly, teeth slowly gritting together between tightly pressed lips. Heās never liked kids much, arrogant bunch of little pricks who thought they were hot shit. These two just tended to be at the top of the shit list, both due to their attitudes among other things. They fully deserved to be there.
He locks eyes with Gold, and doesnāt move an inch as heās approached. The distance shortens dangerously, and it becomes evident this is mere moments from becoming a similar scene to the one it was a few weeks ago, and Proton has true little complaints. Heās still bitter, humiliated over the injuries heād received, and regardless of what heād dealt alreadyā¦
He wanted to give it back tenfold.
Hands fist in his shirt, and he hisses slightly as heās tugged downwards towards the otherās far shorter level. Thereās liquid malice in those green eyes, and for a moment he simply gives the younger a dull look before he allows his lips to twist upwards.Ā ć
That depends, shit-for-brains.
Are you?
ć Without one hesitation, one hand tightly balls into a fist, then shoots up and immediately slams down towards the youngerās face.Ā
The scene unfolds quickly, and no differently than expected. Had the other boy actually backed down when told, he would have been forced to question whether this was the Gold he knew. As it is, there is no question about it; such reckless stupidity is difficult to come by and impossible to fake.
His own stupidity comes forth in the form of words, spat at the Rockets as if they tasted of brimstone.Ā āI donāt give a damn what either of you has to say.ā He doubts that will keep the taller from telling him something he absolutely does not want to hear, but he says it anyway, as staying silent is hardly an option.
When Proton leaps into action, so too does Silver, though not nearly in time to prevent a hit on either side. As if the two were creatures of rational thought, he shouts,Ā āWhat the hell do you think youāre doing? Do you idiots think violence is gonna solve anything?ā
This is turning into a real class-A mess. For a moment Petrel wonders, realization slowly dawning on him, if perhaps Proton might have already been through a round one with this idiot kid whoās a foot shorter than him and apparently in possession of a lot more nerve than Petrel has realized. But, Proton starting a fistfight is something of an inevitability -- at least he gets it out somewhere, even if it is with a damn teenager.
The rest of this skit is going to be entirely improv, anyway.
<<Yeah... Iām sure you donāt, kid.>> He takes a real deep drag on his cigarette, burning it down to the filter before tossing it away, then begins the difficult maneuver that is getting out and lighting another one with just one hand; the crowbar, after all, is still hanging loose from his left hand.
<<Violence wonāt solve anything, huh? Funny, hearing that from someone like you -- from what I heard, you were always the problem child, stealing and getting into trouble... >> Heās grinning around the cigarette heās finally managed to light. <<Or are you going to pretend youāre a little better than that? Come on, try harder to convince your little friend here, because no one else is believing it. Probably not even you, right?>>
Petrel laughs, like heās telling a joke instead of not-so-slyly making a dig at the kid.

Ā Ā Ā ā„Ā It wasnāt difficult to make a point of avoiding someone you didnāt want to see in this cityā especially now that the space available to them had doubled with the introduction of the skyscrapers made of a once-grey sky. Yet, for all this mirror image did to enthrall his fellow citizens, without so much as a passing care did Roman pay the threat looming above, steps carefully measured where he traipsed his path along the pavement.
From the glowing end of his cigarette a faint curl of smoke wafted, gaze distinctly set to the immediate road strewn before him as what scant traces of day remained wore on into the flood of yellowing streetlamps which accompanied the onset of night. So did it go without saying that little forewarning was the thief permitted before within armās reach he had drawn to this particular predator staged now before him.
Relieved by a foreign hand of the cigarette at one moment comfortably poised between his lips, jade eyes lifted to scrutinize the features of the offending party. Familiar they appeared, the redhead taking a moment to place just where he had come by the sight of the otherās ire beforeā¦
Ah, thatās rightā¦
Ā Ā Ā āSuch a cold greeting⦠You could stand to look a lit-tle more pleased to see me. Youāll break my heart.ā Teasingly was this remark imparted in the full knowledge that the line he toed was a precarious one indeed. For, it had been in the course of their last meeting perhaps a month prior that the fleeting relationship the two shared was thrown all out of sorts by some petty thievery. That was, if Roman had the capacity to settle for anythingĀ āpettyā (which he didnāt).
Ā Ā Ā āDonāt be too upset now, dear. Youāre not the first, and youāre certainly not the last. But there is a lesson to be learned from all thisā¦donāt you think?ā
This shithead, Petrel remembers him by the obnoxious hue of his hair alone. Red is a fitting color for the man, considering the rage heās managed to inspire in the Rocket executive.Ā
Still, heās not going to murder the man yet. Yet. Instead, he saunters on up as casually as he can manage -- legās treating him good today, a blessing all on it its own -- careful to keep in his blind spot so as to get the jump on the other before he ever realizes Petrelās even there. He hasnāt planned this out in the least, aside from the obvious goal of revenge, and spotting him in a darkened street, lazing about and smoking a cigarette like he owns the place, gives him an idea, a flash in the old brain pan.Ā
He only has to lean just a bit to swipe the cancer stick straight out of Torchwickās mouth, quick to take a deep drag on the thing before letting it rest in the corner of his mouth as he hovers over the seated manās shoulder. Then, as an afterthought, he allows a single white-gloved hand come to rest uncomfortably close to the other manās throat: a gentle reminder.
<<Yeah, I learned something, alright... youāre a lot more pleasant to be around when you canāt talk, Torchwick.>>
<<But I guess making off with the rest of my cash and my last pack of cigarettes was just a bonus, right?>>Ā Thereās an edge of harshness to his tone, normally so easygoing and jocular in nature, that Roman would do well to note.Ā
<<Iāll be a little happier when my two-thousand is back in my pocket.>>
A lot has happened since the beginning of thisĀ āwar.ā
Their homeland hasnāt been safe by any means, but there isnāt a single doubt that they somehow have it worse than their opponents. While theyāve staged all-out assaults on the other city, theyāve only sent stragglers into theirs. Some of them are reasonably powerful, thereby commanding quite a bit of Silverās time, but the rest? Itās nothing but childās play, and heās had enough of it.
A decision is made.
It isnāt long after he decides that he comes across a familiar face, and one of the most fitting for what he has in mind, on top of it.Ā āHey ā Petrel!ā Calling him by name; what a rare treat.Ā āCome with me. Weāre going into the other city.ā
Heās been hobbling about like an old man, left leg slowing him down all the while -- but Petrel isnāt about to complain, considering it lends his cover story some credence if heās stopped by anyone too nosy for their own damn good. It helps that he isnāt dramatizing the pain today; the general pall hanging over the city seems to be aggravating the matter on an entirely mental level.
While heās wondering whether or not he should make a couple calls and see if he can ditch whatās likely a fruitless venture in favor of getting drunk off his ass, the kid shows up. Though, he figures, he probably shouldnāt be calling his de facto leader a kid, but not saying it aloud helps greatly.
<<Getting antsy waiting around, then? I donāt blame you in the least, but... nah, itās not my place to say no, right?>>
ć Naturally, heās been fooled before, and should really know better by now. Some part of him, though, wants to still give people the benefit of the doubt. Not trusting anybody no matter what didnāt sit right with him, even if he knew it was probably the better option.Ā And people wonder how he continuously gets himself in trouble.
Chase jumps the slightest bit at the arm suddenly flung around his person, small smile somewhat awkward. It didnāt seem like there was any ill-intent behind it, so he shouldnāt really be complaining at the rareĀ occurrenceĀ of somebody being nice. Besides, the odd way the other is walking suggests heās not the only one with a bout of bad luck with injuries.
Fingers twitch, and for a moment he seems ready to decline. But finally, his shoulders sag in defeat and he slowly follows, lagging a bit behind.Ā ć
ā¦Right. Nameās Chase.
Iād rather not get shitfaced right now, so you donāt need to worry about that.
ćĀ Probably because heād really rather not leave himself wasted with a complete stranger he knew nothing about. He had some common sense, thank you, even if the fact he really should be keeping a closer eye on the man in question, but opts to let his eyes slide elsewhere in their usual bout of paranoia.Ā ć
It works, whether in spite of how overtly simplistic and heavyhanded the act Petrel is putting on happens to be or not, it works, and this idiotās following him -- clearly with some misgivings, but not damn well enough, because if he had half a functioning sense of what any good mom always liked to call stranger-danger, heād have been blocks away, safe and sound.
Instead, heās walking to his veritable grave. So goes the job.
They head down about a half a block before Petrel points them around a corner, adding some nonsense about it being a ways before they reach his favorite joint, and would you forgive me for walking so slow?
Another block, they finally pass the building heās staked out in this sector as a temporary base of operations. That, he figures, is close enough.
The crowbar swings up in one smooth, practiced arc to make contact with Chaseās back -- knock the wind and any shouting out of him -- before he takes his weapon to flip and pin the other man against the wall by the chest. Itās easy to do this shit when theyāre caught off guard, he thinks, fingers wrapping around a pale throat and gripping tight. Itās easy, to gauge how long it takes before he needs to let go just to guarantee unconsciousness and not death.
Practice makes perfect. So goes the job.
Once the guyās out, Petrel drags him in a door down the side-alley and, while this Chase isnāt heavy, heās grateful heās set himself up a room on the first floor and not, say, the fifth. Itās a dingy, nasty little room, equipped with all his tools. Two chairs in the middle for now, though, thatās all he needs.
One of them will be bound by wrist and ankle to theirs, of course, but: small details.
Now, really, Petrelās just grateful to sit down and rest his damn leg; itās time to wait for his friend to wake up.
ć An averted gaze is all he offers after heās done speaking, never really being good with constant direct eye contact. Especially when heās nervous. Heās trying really hard not to make it seem like he wants to bolt from this guy at the next possible second.
He doesnāt lookā¦that bad, to be honest. Pretty nice, actually, even though Chase has learned to never judge based on appearances. It isĀ a welcome sight, the carefree expression on his face. Viridian eyes blink at the laugh, and he actually feels his shoulders relaxā¦a smidgen.Ā Ā ćĀ
What? I meanā yeah, Iām legal.
And, uh, thanks. First person to not give me crap for it.
ć The idea is ever so tempting, but warning signs still liner in the depths of his paranoid mind.Ā He doesnāt know the older man, doesnāt know which side heās on, despite how tired he seems like he is.Ā ć
Not a bad idea, I guess. Would be nice to try and forget this stupid shit for a while.
ć Hesitance lingers in plain view, fingers tapping on his arm.Ā ć
With any luck, this guy is never going to make it to the damn bar, let alone two blocks past here. Which, incidentally, happens to be about where Petrelās apartment is located; never work far from home, he always likes to say.
Still, that jackass smile is on his face as this idiot starts to lower his guard like heās never been swindled in his entire fucking life before now, so he figures he can lay it on a little thicker, and heartily swings an arm around the guyās shoulder, gives a quick squeeze before letting him go and starting to walk on, playing up the hobble made evident from his bad leg.
<<Tell you what, Iāll even buy the first couple rounds -- hell, however long you last, so long as you donāt get piss-yourself, fall-down drunk, that is.>> He stops, turns around.
<<If we got a deal, you can keep following me. My nameās Petrel, by the way.>>
As he turns around, he of course neglects to mention, like he does every single person he hands down a punishment to: itās so they have someone to beg. Like itāll help. Someoneās got to do his job.

ć If you asked for his opinion on the city heād been staying in for a number of months,Ā he wouldnāt have absolutely positive reviews, all things considering. Sure, it had itās good points, and there was those who made the stay far more tolerable, but all in all the bad tended to outweigh the good for a majority of the time.
He didnāt belong at the front lines like all these people, though, and that was he only thing he was glad for; that he could leave the survival to someone else who knew what they were doing when it came to the battlefield. It would make no difference if he left, right? Or at least, thatās what he thought as he attempted to slink away from both the line of fire and line of sight.
The sudden cold weight on his shoulder is enough to nearly make him leap out of his skin, back rigid and surprise splashed over him like a canvas. It takes a second before he quickly tries toĀ straightenĀ himselfĀ and actually turn to look at the guy, but he manages.Ā ć
Jesus christ, man, what the hell? You always make your job giving people heart attacks, or am I just special?
ć He shifts his footing and crosses his arms, a nervous habit.Ā And heās more than a little nervous, especially considering the object the other has in his hands.Ā ć
Iām notā Iām not lost. I just figured Iād just stay out of the way. Shit, the soldiers know what theyāre doing better than me. Iām not that useful in this kinda situation. Itās not for me.
This kid is shaping up to be an easier target than heād previously sized him up for all of thirty seconds ago. Thatās fine and dandy for Petrel; he likes his jobs easy, though a little bit of a struggle -- challenge, excuse him, thatās the PC term -- keeps it interesting.
In the end, though, they all end up bleeding the same. Bones crack the same. Fingernails? Teeth? Hair? Comes out the same. What they donāt do is scream the same -- thatās kept it interesting all these years.
Petrel is smiling the same goofy grin heās always been known for throughout this line of thought, as if heās planning nothing beyond going home and getting drunk and calling it a day.
Still, he laughs like he thinks this guyās made the funniest joke in the world.
<<Haha! Yeah, youāre real special. Unique, anyway. First smart guy Iāve seen all day, getting away from it all.>>
<<Tell you what, how about we go get a drink or two? Youāre legal, right? I need a real damn smoke break.>>Ā
All things considered, this invasion crap was going pretty damn well. Petrel canāt say heās disappointed heās been forcibly relegated to the technical vanguard of their frontlines, not in the least bit -- if heās being honest for once in a while, this shadowed background was exactly what he preferred.
That, and it gave him a chance to deal with stragglers, just like the boss in green wanted. He likes doing his job, and he likes having something to show -- and this guy weaseling himselfĀ away from the line of fire fits the bill nicely.Ā
His legās acting up a bit in this heat; itās spring but itās unseasonably hot, and the old breaks in his left knee and thigh still bother him when the humidity is up like this, but he canāt be bothered to stop now. Crowbar in hand -- itās wartime, and thereās not a chance in hell heās going unarmed, even in his own city -- he swings it about to rest almost gently on the shoulder of the young man heās undoubtedly about to terrify out of his wits.
The cigarette slides to the side of his mouth first, of course.
<<So, whatās happening today, my friend?>> His toneās pretty light, but thereās something worrying just below the surface, if youāre listening. <<Looks like youāre a little lost today in all the confusion.>>
so. home world petrel is as much of a meme and halfassed villain as usual, has all 5 koffing and his weezing that all sing mambo no 5 still. heās not going to be actively going out and helping people but... tbh, if you hit the right weak spot (by being a dumb kid or something, damn these kids), heāll probably try to help you out. Or run and haul your ass too, he aināt gonna die for this shit.
alter petrel is the guy who, instead of seeing the general nastiness that came with working for team rocket as something to get over or avoid or joke around, has embraced his role as your standard piece of shit. he still likes to joke and be casual, but the amount of joy he takes in general torture and the like makes you wonder what fucked him over. it probably doesnāt help that when he was initially going to begin his career as a robber-in-disguise before team rocket that there was a particularly unfortunate incident where he broke his left leg in several places -- itās never been quite right ever since.
perhaps heās a little bitter about it.

Today, heās back to dealing with a problem that, quite frankly, he never thought he would have to face -- in fact, heās pretty sure no one . Petrelās sitting on a bench in the green sector, sole remaining Koffing out of its Pokeball and floating lackadaiscally the air. Nothing appears to be wrong here.
<<Koffing, Smokescreen -- oh, come on, donāt look at me like that.>> Thereās a momentary groan of frustration, then he whispers, <<Mambo, Smokescreen.>>
Of course, that works. What happens immediately after, no, thatās the real problem. As the noxious fumes spray from the various crater-like holes across its body, music begins to emit from them as well... but in that horrific voice all Koffing seem to possess.

<<Itād be a nicer evening if the sun werenāt shining, donāt you think?>> His expression softens a bit; the nice guy act is here. <<But anyway, long time no see! What brings a br -- kid like you to a place like this?>>
Silverās not supposed to be here ā but then, neither is that asshole, turning the corner like heās got every right to hang around. Gold lurches forward a step at the sight of him, expression darkening immediately. āCourse⦠ācourse more Rocket douchebags are here.
āYeah? Youāre being ānice?āā he yells back, co-opting the conversation. He starts walking, coming in on the two Assholes Supreme. āSo you donāt mind if Iām āniceā too, right? Help you out a little?ā
He tosses a hesitant look over his shoulder, but doesnāt stop. Petrel being here is one thing, but Silver, he doesnāt have to hang around at all.
ć Now that is an unexpected face, one that managed to make one of the executiveās eyebrows arch. So Giovanniās brat was stuck here, too? Not that he really cared about the kid, despite his lineage. He could honestly give even less of a shit now than he did before, even.Ā Still, the fact he has the nerve to mouth off causes Protonās eye to twitch. Luckily, heās beaten to the commenting punch.
He slides beside his partner in crime without a care for the advancing younger boy, head cocking at the outburst and allows a scoff to slide from his lips.Ā ć
Oh, what? You wanna carry our belongings like a good bitch boy? Or maybe you come crawling back to have me kick in your skull again!
Never took you for a masochist, but apparently breaking in your face wasnāt enough for you, was it?
ć He was really not in the mood for some little assholeāsĀ bullshit.Ā Ā ć
The filthyĀ āfriendshipā facade that Petrel puts on for him is a nothing short of disgusting. No one among them is idiotic enough to believe that maybe these two have some kind of rapport. No one who has ever mentioned the wordsĀ āTeam Rocketā in his presence could ever believe Silver would willingly affiliate with the cowards he considers the worst of the worst.
The scowl he presents them is almost acidic in the way it burns.Ā āDonāt fucking call me that,ā he threatens, well aware that heās never once spoken his name to one of these goons.Ā āI donāt associate with cowards like him ā or you.ā
Then itās Protonās turn to chime in where heās not wanted, and Silverās eyes narrow further, burning scarlet beyond the grey. As Gold moves forward, so too does he. No longer is the blade of his tongue focused on his enemies, but one person he could almost call a friend.Ā
āI said, Stand aside, Gold. This doesnāt concern you.ā
Well, that worked about as well as expected. Petrel didnāt expect any less from the little redheaded fireball; heās never been agreeable in any sense of the word, and him walkingĀ away with a couple of smiles and a wave was never in the cards anyway. The kid thinks theyāre scum -- heās fine with that.
Itāll be a real shame if heās got to prove it.
Protonās already champing at the bit, sour as heās been these past few weeks about his broken finger, and Petrel is almost shocked he hasnāt started an all-out brawl yet. Not that it matters: theyāll get there soon enough, whether PetrelĀ wants any part of this or not.
<<Jeez, the two of you have a loverās spat or something?>> The cigarette is slid back between his lips for a long drag.
<<Alright, since I donāt have to be so nice anymore, you want to hear something, little mister daddy issues?>>
