So Iβve recently rewatched the emmerdale eps where Robert tells Aaron that he slept with Rebecca which were written by Maxine Alderton. These scenes are a rollercoaster of emotions and they are so beautiful. The reason Maxine is so well liked by us, I believe, is that she explains why actions have happened. Iβm assuming she gets told what is going to happen and she writes the words to show how that thing happening is going to be played out. For example, she tries to explain why Robert would cheat on Aaron with Rebecca even though his first vow was literally βI promise to be faithfulβ, which as an audience we found particularly hard to swallow considering just months before Robert was willing to risk his life for Aaron. Also, for Aaron, the link with Gordon is very clever as to why Aaron would forgive Robert so soon. Also, she acknowledges character development with Aaron seeing a counsellor.(which has seemed to be forgotten for Robert in recent eps, but thatβs a whole other rantπ) Maxine couldnβt stop the cheating sl from happening as thatβs Iainβs job but she tries to rationalise why Robert would do it. She makes characters, especially Robert and Aaron, have more depth to them as sometimes I think writers use Robert as this one-dimensional selfish gold-digger when in fact he is much more complex and Maxine seems to be the one of the only ones that fully understands this. Another thing is her continuity and references from previous eps is incredible and is really pleasing to us to know that what has been said before hasnβt been forgotten just for βdramaβ. This is prevalent through both the robron wedding and the break-up and make-up scenes, actually any robron scene sheβs written tbh! You can tell sheβs a real fan of the couple too. I also like the fact that she rams home that Robert didnβt cheat because he is bisexual and obviously she was the first one to write in for Robert to actually say that he was bi, which gives bi representation on mainstream which, personally, I am so grateful for. In the past, the show has definitely used Robert as being bi as a comedy tool as a sort of βcant make up his mindβ, but Maxine makes sure to stamp out those stereotypes. And more generally, I feel safe when watching an ep that she has written, if that makes sense, especially when robron are concerned, because I know that everything will fit with their characters. This is a bit of ramble, but all in all, I love Maxine, she should write on emmerdale more, she is so fantastic and her eps are always my favourite!
