u see a lot of people on here who are in support of like gender affirming surgeries for trans people, generally stuff like vaginoplasty, phalloplasty, top surgery, FFS and the like are decently widely accepted in circles on here

but stuff like rhinoplasties, hip and waist cosmetic surgeries, breast surgeries outside the context of trans top surgery, are derided for being the end result of societal pressures to look a certain way, which in large part i would agree with. however, i dont think one can say that trans surgeries are exempt from those same societal pressures; my desire to get top and bottom surgery cannot be meaningfully separated from societal expectations of what a “female body” looks like

and i say this not to then sort trans surgeries into this category weve constructed of “bad immoral surgeries”, but to say that cosmetic surgeries are always going to on some level be subject to influence from societal pressures; attempting to draw a clear line between which societal pressures result in acceptable cosmetic surgeries and which dont is a losing game which relies on a set of arbitrary lines in the sand

its a problem which i think that approach is ill equipped to handle

id much rather look at it from the lens of bodily autonomy, because i genuinely do think thats inseparable from this discussion. people should be allowed to do with their bodies what they wish, even if i or others think its bad, or someone thinks its a bad choice influenced by what they see as unacceptable external factors. peoples body, my body, should not be subject to the current moral consensus on which procedures are good and moral and which are not

id much rather address the problems at their source, much rather discuss the ways in which we are trained to see this bodily feature as desirable and this one as shameful, than by trying to sidestep the issues and skip straight to the end result of acceptance for all bodies by forbidding, legally or morally, the ability of people to change their bodies

I’ve known Abood (@aboodmush) since May of this year, working across platforms to promote his family’s evacuation campaign. For awhile he was able to encourage people to donate, either by documenting the genocide's effects on his loved ones, or marking clear milestones for the campaign's progress. But this movement has severely dwindled over the summer. The rate of donations has become very unpredictable, and Abood has only received 2 donations for the past 24 hours. So I’m humbly asking for you all for help him regain prior momentum.

If you read the description in Abood's GFM campaign (linked below), you'll find a detailed account of all sorts of horrors he's been exposed to since the genocide's escalation. He was left to fend for himself after being taken from his family in the Northern part of the strip and unlawfully detained for 25 days. He's survived massacre after massacre whilst grappling the struggles of homelessness. His best shot at surviving all of this has been this fundraiser, which aims to secure not only travel funds for the border's reopening, but also daily necessities for his family members at risk of starvation.
