i found out that there was a secret character customization in pikmin 4 called “copper coin”, which would apparently “make your character be faceless”. i like hiding my avatar’s face in video games (i just think it looks cool) so i thought i’d activate it for my next playthrough. i guessed that it would look like the pikmin 3 tutorial guy, or like how castaways look like before you rescue them.

to activate it, you had to press a special combination of buttons on the character creation screen. you’d know that it activated because a special icon would appear in the bottom right. the character wouldn’t change on the customization screen, but it would later.

when i started gameplay as my character, i found myself in hero’s hideaway with shepherd standing off in the distance by herself. for some reason, i couldn’t move the camera or anything to see my face. oatchi wasn’t there, and there were no pikmin or enemies or anything.

i went to talk to shepherd. once i hit the “a” button, i was able to freely move the camera again.

that was when i found out that my character had no face at all. they had no nose, or mouth, or eyes, or ears. their head was just a single smooth shape, and they weren’t wearing a helmet at all.

despite this, shepherd talked to them like this was completely normal. i don’t remember what she said because i was too engrossed in the strange, mannequin-like look of my character.
