I made a previous post about this, but I just finished my rewatch of doctor who (yay!) and say what you will about how the two new seasons of how the last season ended (wtf was that by the way).
But I really enjoyed how the two Ncuti Gatwa seasons made you feel while you were watching. They may have been grand and extravagant and a little bit weirder than even the fans are used to but they really felt like the essence of the show came back. There was magic in the universe again!
Putting aside how many op super crazy enemies and gods there were the past two seasons, they really felt like the doctor who universe I grew up on was back. It felt like everything was important again and actions had consequences and I loved it! I don’t know where it’ll go from here or when it’ll even come back, but I am actually genuinely excited about watching it again now, I’m enjoying the more modern take more than I initially thought I would.
I think this is the last from me on doctor who for now. Thanks again for reading!! :)
Ok so I’m rewatching doctor who for the first time since like end of high school and I’ve had a few thoughts (apologies this is gonna be long).
I grew up in the SuperWhoLock era of course, the epitome of early 2010s fandom culture and I LOVED doctor who more than anything. 10 and 11 were my favorites and I was honestly super against Peter Capaldi and Jodie Whittaker upon first watch, but rewatching everything now I think I finally know why.
They gave stellar performances as the doctor, nothing in any of this has anything to do with their acting ability or honestly even in their personal portrayals as the doctor. I think as far as the series went, they were great and both managed to portray their own versions of the doctor without completely abandoning who came before.
I just realized that it was during their eras that the show stopped being about the magic of the universe and the wonders of time and space and the importance of people. It just became about the doctor.
I feel like it was the writers here that lost the plot. It became less ‘monster of the week’ with an overarching plot, and just became about the overarching plot. Not only that, but the big seasonal plots all became about the doctor specifically.
The main two examples I wanna talk about are my absolute favorite seasons, and the season where I realized what went wrong with the show.
My absolute FAVORITE seasons are six and seven, the Matt Smith seasons with Amy, Rory, and River Song. These seasons, to me, are perfect. They have perfect character dynamics, a love of the universe and the people in it, and great seasonal plots that don’t erase the importance of the events in the weekly scenarios. The pandorica arc perfectly encapsulates that where it introduces us to a new doctor and a new companion at the beginning of the season and haunts the narrative throughout, leaving us with a, to me at least, satisfying conclusion and answers all the questions we had during the season.
Even though the big bad plot of the season DID still have to do with the doctor, it was presented as a surprise twist that you might not have seen coming. And it wasn’t made out where Amy, Rory, and River were side characters either. In the season finale it actually almost felt like the doctor was the side character to me. And that’s how ALL the seasons should feel.
The show used to be about how the doctor influenced every life he came across, positively or negatively, he was a side character in his own show. Now the side characters are the side characters. The companions hardly feel fleshed out to me before they’re gone, just a means so that the doctor isn’t talking to themself.
For me the worst example of this is season 12, Jodie Whittaker’s second season as the doctor. Like I said before, none of this is about her or her acting, this is about what the show has become.
Season twelve was only ten episodes and a special where the seasonal plot was simply the whole season. The ‘monsters of the week’ felt lazy and the big plot had a two part season premier and a two and a half part season finale. The big bad of the season was the master, and the new master, Sacha Dhawan, was also very good (again, this isn’t about acting).
The master revealed to the doctor what she is the first time lord, the timeless child, and that the history of her life and gallifrey is a lie. To me, this negates almost anything special or significant that happened over the previous 60+ years when it came to the doctor. Their mind would be erased and they’d start over a new life again somewhere, sometime else.
While this can be used as an excuse for the show to go on infinitely, it makes the whole of any of the doctors previous faces and past seem almost like it didn’t even matter. It also just felt like the season was building up to a big reveal, but it was fed to us in such a way that it couldn’t have possibly been a twist that the timeless child could have been anyone else, making the suspense seem false and unnecessary.
From season 10 or 11 on, the show just became about the doctor. No one else mattered, the universe and all the people and planets don’t matter anymore, they’re just used to tell the doctor’s story. It feels like the things that made the show truly special and relatable, even though they were about space and time fell victim to capitalist culture and what the networks thought it was that made everyone fall in love with the show in the first place.
Anyway, this show is extremely special to me and I just wanted to voice my thoughts now that I had finally realized why I don’t like it the same as I used to. Thank you if you read the whole thing! I don’t expect a lot of people to find this but I just wanted to share it somewhere with people who might feel the same.

StanXeno fans we ate so good tonight. Very nearly couldn’t have been gayer. 10/10 chefs kiss. I was so worried they’d do them wrong but based on previous scenes™ I should’ve known the team had it under control.
The only thing I didn’t love is that they skipped the training montage of the space training. It’s been more or less a one to one adaptation so far so that was a surprise to me. But I’m also a little biased because that’s where a lot of Stan scenes are after he comes back and before the rocket.

Do you think Eddie broke down crying when he went home and had to explain everything to Christopher? How he sat down to explain to him how buck needed their help and the depth of explaining this situation to his teenage son about what his basically step father is going through. And it just hit him all at once and he just starts crying and can’t stop.

I just finished my rewatch in preparation for the release of cour 3 and oh my god I forgot how absolutely depressing the end of the south america arc gets. When Chelsea broke down crying because she realized they were letting her and Luna go in order to try and protect them made me remember that most of them are seriously just kids. They’re just kids that wanted to save the world.
Like don’t get me wrong, Stanley is probably my favorite character of all time, other anime included (I just love whatever’s wrong with him. And he and Xeno match each others freak). But like imagine you’re a teenager and you wake up in the stone age and you’re working together with this genius kid to try and explore and save the world. And then suddenly you’re being gunned down by the us military. That shits actually insane.
I just really like the moments like the Chelsea scene because it really makes you realize that like they’re in a situation and normal people would break down and cry if they realized they’re halfway around the world from home and everyone they ever knew was turned to stone and now everyone they currently know is about to be killed. I just love this show so much I can’t wait to see how they adapt the rest of it
