'Shattered Steel'
[DOS] [GERMANY] [MAGAZINE] [1996]
"If Krazy Ivan seems too stupid and MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries too complex and out of touch, Shattered Steel is the happy medium. While Interplay's scrappy tin clearly leans toward action games, the weapon management and the cleanly staged missions, including clever enemy AI, also appeal to strategy/sim fans. The only criticism, besides the rather sparse presentation, remains the design of the mechs, although I was particularly annoyed by the ugly leg textures of some of the mechs, reminiscent of prison clothes. The sound, however, is beyond reproach, thanks to pompous orchestral music, roaring explosions, and weapon sounds. Finally, in network mode, Steel combines simulation elements with 3D shooter-like excitement. Action gamers and network owners should take a look: It's worth it!" ~Sasha Gliss, Power Play (December 1996, based on machine translation)
