SLU Writing Program

Christian Rayner has been using Breakout Rooms in Zoom to organize and conduct peer review. He (randomly) assigns pairs of students to work together. They use screen sharing and Google Docs during those sessions. He has them move from “editing” to “suggesting.” He then roams around as it were, joining the Breakout rooms to check in.

For access to the Billiken Bounty Food Pantry while in-person classes are suspended, please contact the Department of Public Safety (24/7, 314-977-3000). DPS will let you into the space so you are able to take what you need. All that is required to access Billiken Bounty is a SLU photo ID.

I wanted to pass along some thoughts from Emily Phillips, one of our ace instructors who also has experience teaching online.

I often have students struggle to make the MM persuasive as they have previously been working so hard to not tip their hands with the DL but I’m noticing a real difficulty in comprehension despite making videos and such to clarify everything. My thought is that they are just going through so much right now that the processing ability, much less creative thinking, is pretty low. 

I’m trying to remember that I am one of 5-6 instructors they are hearing from right now as they also try to navigate being back at home and such. I’m having them email me their early Statement of Purpose ideas to help guide them as best I can before they write a whole proposal, but I can tell you that early on it’s rough-going.
