Chapter Two: Little Things
The dream was gone by the time you opened your eyes.
You stared at the ceiling, willing yourself to remember.
There had been a hallway.
Someone had called your name.
You remembered turning around.
Then...
Nothing.
You let out a quiet sigh.
"...Weird."
The feeling disappeared as quickly as it came.
Your phone buzzed on the nightstand.
7:18 a.m.
One message from your mom.
One from Geto.
Geto: Morning. Don't forget today's quiz.
A smile crept onto your face.
You caught yourself almost immediately.
"...Why am I smiling?"
It was just a text.
Nothing more.
You unlocked your phone.
You: Thanks :) Hopefully I don't blank the second I sit down.
His reply came before you even locked your screen.
Geto: You won't.
Simple.
Short.
For some reason, it made you feel better.
"...He's just encouraging me."
You slipped your phone into your pocket and headed for class.
The campus was already alive.
Students hurried between buildings, balancing coffee cups and unfinished homework.
You walked through the Humanities Building and instinctively glanced toward the front of the lecture hall.
...
You stopped.
Why were you looking over there?
You frowned to yourself before taking your usual seat.
A minute later, someone slid into the chair beside you.
"Morning."
You looked over.
"Morning, Geto."
"You got here before me again."
"Barely."
"It still counts."
You smiled.
"You're the only person who notices."
"I pay attention."
The answer was simple.
Matter-of-fact.
For some reason, it lingered in your mind.
Before you could think too much about it, another voice interrupted.
"Suguru."
A tall student with white hair stopped beside your row.
"You left your keys."
Geto looked down at his empty pocket.
"...I did."
Satoru tossed the keychain onto the desk.
"What would you do without me?"
"Probably eat breakfast in peace."
"I shared one bite."
"You ate half of it."
"I was hungry."
Geto shook his head, though there was no real annoyance behind it.
Only familiarity.
Satoru finally looked toward you.
"So..."
A grin spread across his face.
"You're the classmate."
You laughed softly.
"I guess I am."
"I'm Satoru."
You introduced yourself.
He nodded once.
"Suguru talks about you."
Your smile faded just a little.
"...Really?"
Geto sighed.
"I've mentioned that we study together."
"Mhm."
"That's all."
Satoru looked unconvinced.
"If you say so."
The professor entered before anyone could continue.
Satoru offered a lazy wave before making his way toward the back of the room.
Class ended quicker than expected.
As students poured into the hallway, Geto adjusted the strap of his backpack.
"Coffee?"
"Sure."
The answer escaped before you thought about it.
You blinked.
"...Actually..."
You frowned.
Why had you answered so quickly?
Did you have plans?
You checked your calendar.
Nothing.
"...Yeah."
You smiled awkwardly.
"I guess I don't have anything else to do."
The strange feeling stayed with you all the way to the café.
It happened again the following week.
Coffee after Psychology.
Studying in the library.
Walking back across campus together.
It wasn't planned.
It simply became routine.
Sometimes Satoru appeared halfway through.
Sometimes he disappeared just as quickly.
One afternoon, while the three of you sat outside the student center, another student approached your table.
"Hey, Suguru."
Geto looked up.
"Oh. Hey."
She smiled politely before glancing at you.
Then back at him.
"You've been spending a lot of time together."
"We have Psychology together," he answered.
"Still."
She smiled knowingly.
"It's nice."
Once she'd walked away, Satoru looked toward Geto.
"You know what she's thinking."
"I do."
"You also know she's wrong."
"I do."
He stole one of Geto's fries.
"You should stop feeding rumors."
"I'm not."
"You kind of are."
Geto sighed.
"...Can I have my fry back?"
"No."
By Friday, the library had become your favorite place on campus.
It was quiet.
Comfortable.
You and Geto usually studied in silence, occasionally asking each other questions whenever one of you got stuck.
Today wasn't much different.
You opened your notebook.
Read the same paragraph.
Turned the page.
Stopped.
"..."
You hadn't read any of it.
You slowly flipped back.
How had you gotten to the next page?
"...Focus."
You tried again.
A few minutes later, you looked up.
Geto was writing.
You looked back down.
Not even thirty seconds passed before your eyes drifted toward him again.
"..."
You frowned.
Why?
There wasn't anything to look at.
He was just studying.
"...Everything okay?"
You looked up.
Geto had already noticed.
"Hm?"
"You've looked up a few times."
"...Have I?"
"A little."
You laughed awkwardly.
"Sorry."
"You don't have to apologize."
"I'm just distracted today."
"It happens."
His smile was small.
Comforting.
You smiled back before returning to your notes.
Still...
You couldn't shake the strange feeling that something was different.
You just couldn't figure out what.
Later that afternoon, you left the library alone.
Geto had stayed behind to return a few books.
You walked halfway across campus before slowing your pace.
"..."
Something felt wrong.
You checked your backpack.
Laptop.
Wallet.
Notebook.
Phone.
Everything was there.
"...Then what am I forgetting?"
You stood there for another moment before giving up.
Maybe you were just tired.
The thought didn't leave until you reached your dorm.
Only then did you realize what it was.
You hadn't said goodbye.
"..."
You stared at your dorm room door.
Why did that bother you?
You'd see him on Monday.
You laughed quietly.
"I'm being weird."
You unlocked your door and stepped inside.
That night came slower than usual.
You changed into pajamas, brushed your teeth, climbed into bed.
11:43 p.m.
You reached for your phone.
No notifications.
You set it back down.
Closed your eyes.
A minute later...
You picked it up again.
"..."
The screen remained dark.
You frowned at yourself.
"What am I doing?"
You weren't waiting for anyone.
Were you?
You unlocked your phone anyway.
Your thumb hovered over Geto's name.
You stared.
There wasn't anything you wanted to say.
There wasn't a reason to text him.
So why...
You quickly locked your phone.
"No."
You placed it face down on your nightstand.
"I'm just tired."
You repeated it quietly.
"I'm just tired."
Eventually...
Sleep found you.
Suguru
The dorm room was quiet.
Satoru had fallen asleep almost an hour ago.
Suguru sat alone at his desk.
The wooden box remained hidden beneath his bed.
He hadn't touched it since that night.
Hadn't even looked at it.
"...Nothing happened."
He whispered the words to himself.
The week had been normal.
You'd laughed.
Studied.
Gone for coffee.
Everything friends did.
Nothing more.
He let out a slow breath.
"You scared yourself over nothing."
His phone buzzed softly.
Satoru: u awake
Suguru smiled despite himself.
Suguru: barely
A few seconds passed.
Satoru: good
Satoru: don't overthink things
Suguru stared at the message.
His smile faded.
How did Satoru always seem to know?
He set his phone aside and finally stood.
The room was dark except for the moonlight spilling through the window.
He knelt beside the bed.
For a long moment...
He simply looked at the wooden box.
Then, with a quiet sigh, he pushed it farther underneath until it disappeared completely into the darkness.
"...I'm done with you."
He climbed into bed.
Closed his eyes.
The room fell silent.
Minutes passed.
Then—
A soft vibration echoed through the room.
Suguru reached blindly for his phone.
Nothing.
The screen stayed black.
"..."
He frowned.
Maybe he'd imagined it.
He rolled over.
The vibration came again.
Longer this time.
Not from the nightstand.
Not from Satoru's desk.
Somewhere...
Beneath the floor.
Suguru slowly opened his eyes.
The room was perfectly still.
He listened.
Nothing.
After another minute, he laughed quietly to himself.
"...You're exhausted."
He closed his eyes once more.
Across campus...
You shifted in your sleep.
Your hand searched the empty space beside your pillow.
Like you were looking for something.
Or someone.
When your fingers found nothing...
They curled into the blanket instead.
You never woke up.
But for the first time in years...
You dreamed of the same dark eyes twice.
