I was completely unaware of the scenario and heartbroken to hear about it. Second the shoutout to the beta. I’m very thankful they reached out and it was partially irresponsible of me to publish the ask in the first place. I send the two nothing but my love and support.

there are no reliable writing tells that are exclusive to AI (because AI learned all of those tells from scraping real writers! it doesn't matter what anyone puts in their fic descriptions about not wanting it to happen, every LLM has scraped every fanfic site and unpublished google doc in existence a million times over), and as someone unfamiliar with the author in question who literally spent less than 10 minutes looking at this, it looks like they have a consistent history of opposing AI, including for writing, on social media.

i don't know this person and don't think i've read much of their work, i am not pretending to have Ultimate Truth or proof in any direction but just wanted to advise caution, because the types of arguments being used to accuse do not have a very solid foundation.

i really worry about the kinds of witch hunts this technology has generated and would caution the community about spreading unsubstantiated rumors (or trusting the opinion of an AI about who's work is legitimate vs who is cheating and should be chased out of community, which is what AI checkers are)

it sucks! i've certainly had my suspicions about other fics in the past, and i don't have a perfect solution to how we fix this. i think no one does. but i do feel strongly that anonymous finger pointing isn't going to be it, and advocate that we try open communication and education first.

Absolutely! AI sucks, but also accusing people of using AI by using AI is not the best way to go about it lol. This isn’t the first time we’ve gotten an ask accusing an author of AI and I hope people know we are not the heads of phanfiction. Please do not look to us to be the ultimate judge in AI phanfiction court. I just like making lists.

We were contacted by a second party who is the beta reader for this author and confirmed their writing is very real and this author has been extremely unjustly harassed.
