Bring Me The Boys

It amused me a great deal that someone would try and school me, via elrohare, about my Australian contribution. I specifically made sure to not make it jingoistic, dropping “G’day mate” or “Bonza” or “True blue” or any other phrase people overseas think we say, but in truth very few of us do. I also didn’t wanna play up having pet spiders or roos or drop bears (even though I have actually had pet spiders), because as an Aussie, I wanted it to be a true interpretation. And I’ll pat myself on the back and say I really think I achieved that.

On top of that, a tool in writing can be to spell things to convey an accent. It’s not enough to type a word and expect, let say an American reader, to sound that out in their head as an Aussie would say it. So you come up with alternative spelling to aid that. You come up with words like “sarvo” or “Straya”.

Which brings us to this particular critique.

The reason I chose to make this post, with the risk of offending the OP, is because of a recent post on instagram by CNN telling the world our PM said “fuckssake” when an elevator stopped suddenly while riding it. The comments were hilarious, coz I think the intention was to outrage people, but that’s not how we roll.

This critic saying the word “Straya” is akin to the (awful) Simpsons Australian episode, and that no one here actually says that, can now be disproved by this comment in the PM swearing CNN post.

I rest my case, your honour.

One last thing, despite all that’s happened in the last six months, the talent of a writer should never been in question, and I will always love this fic. And I feel proud and honoured of my own contribution, and I hope others do too. So please enjoy.
