" he asked , a over dramatic scoff escaping his lips . " rude . i didn't even do anything . " despite that , a lazily grin could be seen forming his lips as he tips back in his chair. " you say that like i'm not super easy to take care of . i'll have you know for at the low low price of some fries and a single compliment i can behave for at least twenty minutes . if that aint easy i don't know what is . " he paused for a second . like he was seriously thinking about it before quickly adding . " actually now it's two . infatuation and what not . "

cerulean  hues  blink  at  him  for  half  a  second  before  a  laugh  finally  breaks  free,  her  head  dropping  briefly  like  she  physically  cannot  believe  the  words  that  just  left  his  mouth.  "  did  you  just  say  infatuation  ?  "  amusement  laces  every  syllable  now,  "  sweetheart,  I  think  the  word  you  were  lookin'  for  was  inflation,  but  honestly  this  might  be  funnier.  "  the  grin  lingering  across  glossed  lips  softens  anything  that  could  have  sounded  mean  as  she  leans  back  in  her  chair,  "  and  absolutely  not,  by  the  way.  you  are  not  easy  to  take  care  of.  you're  basically  doug  off  the  disney  movie  up.  "

"well, that's on you for thinking that despite knowing me for over two decades." jt teased her as he leaned against the counter. "couldn't get the night off?"

"  and  here  I  thought  maybe  somebody  would've  finally  knocked  some  sense  into  you during that time,  "  she  returns  dryly,  cerulean  hues  rolling  before  a  small  grin  threatens  at  glossed  lips,  "  and  unfortunately  not.  you  know  me,  money  doesn't  exactly  grow  on  trees  for  some  of  us.  "  shoulders  lift  into  a  light  shrug,  "  still  tryin'  to  save  enough  to  finally  pay  off  ladybug.  "

𝗮  𝗱𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗸  𝗴𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲  𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘀  her  lips  before  she  even  knows  it,  she  attempts  to  delay  the  regret  creeping  up  her  cheeks  with  a  big  sip  of  her  pina  colada.  she  takes  the  umbrella  from  her  drink  and  presents  it  to  the  other  as  if  it’s  a  microphone,  “  so,  mr.  wrangler,  sources  say  the  team  chemistry  is  improving.  sources  also  saw  you  crying  during  a  southern  rendition  of  ‘total  eclipse  of  the  heart'   a  couple  of  minutes  ago.  care  to  comment ? ”

"  first  of  all,  those  sources  sound  very  very  unreliable,  "  a  laugh  slipping  under  his  breath  as  he  took  the  little  umbrella  microphone  from  her  with  far  too  much  seriousness.  "  and  secondly  ?  if  a  man  can't  get  emotionally  invested  in  a  power  ballad  after  a few  beers,  then  what  are  we  even  doing  here  tonight  ?  "  a  grin  lingering,  as  he  angled  the  umbrella  back  toward  her,  "  now  let's  talk  about  the  real  story  here  ...  you  voluntarily  out  in  public  having  fun.  did  hell  freeze  over  or  did  you  simply  come  to  get  a  story  ?  "

𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲  𝘁𝗵𝗲  𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱  𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻  after  a  disastrous  summer drought,  relief  washes  over  the  features  of  the  aydin  girl,  shoulders  instantly  relaxing,  lips  softening  into  a  gentle  smile,  everything  about  her  less  forced  and  more  natural,  all  at  the  simple  understanding  of  the  other.  “  yes,  thank  you.  this  sounds  more  like  something  i’d  enjoy.  ”  she  says,  smiling,  “  and  let  me  buy  you  one  too  !  if,  that’s  allowed  ?  i’m  not  sure  on  the  drinking-on-the-job  rules  for  bartenders—  i’m  a  physio  so  it’s  a  big  no-no,  ”  an  awkward  laugh  spills  alongside  her  ramblings,  “  but,  uh,  yeah  !  if  there  are  no  legal  implications  i  would  definitely  like  to  buy  you  one  too  as  a  thank  you.  otherwise  my  lips  probably  would  be  stained  blue  an  hour  or  so  from  now.  ”

"  well,  we  definitely  can't  have  you  walkin'  outta  here  lookin'  like  you  lost  a  fight  with  a  blue  raspberry  slushie  from  the  gas  station  down  the  road,  now  can  we  ?  "  tease  slipping  easily  from  glossed  lips,  though  there's  warmth  settled  underneath  every  word.  "  besides,  you  still  get  the  whole  beachy  vibe  with  the  beach  bum  breeze  ...  ain't  exactly  like  texas  has  an  ocean  nearby  for  us  to  dip  our  toes  into  anyway.  "  the  heat  outside  already  unbearable  this  late  in  the  day.  "  and  technically  ?  probably  not  supposed  to  drink  while  workin'.  unofficially  ?  "  shoulders  lift  into  a  small  shrug,  cerulean  hues  flickering  back  toward  her  with  the  hint  of  a  grin,  as  she  proceeds  to  make  her  drink,  "  but, the  closest  thing  I  get  to  livin'  dangerously  back  here  is  a  virgin  pina  colada.  "

𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀  𝗼𝗳  𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱   flash  across  his  mind  like  a  movie  being  rewinded  on  double  speed.  the  two  of  them  in  the  barn  after  school,  backpacks  spilling  out  on  hay-covered  floor,  sheets  of  crumpled  up  pieces  of  homework  and  dogeared  notebooks  almost  getting  stomped  by  their  very  different  but  somehow  synchronising  dance  moves.  marco  feels  his  inhibitions  slowly slipping  through  tightly  wound  fingers  with  every  beat  of  the  song,  “  it’s  a  quarter  after  one  !  i’m  all  alone  and  i  need  you  now  !!  said  i  wouldn’t  call  but  i’ve  lost  all  control  and  i  need  you  now  !!  ”  he’s  really  screaming  more  than  singing,  thank  the  stars  the  boy’s  throw  is  better  than  his  pitch.  “  and  i  don’t  know  how  i  can  do  without,  i  just  need  you  now  !!  ”

"  lord,  moretti  …  still  can't  carry  a  tune  to  save  your  life,  huh  ?  "  tease  slipping  past  glossed  lips,  though  there's  far  too  much  warmth  behind  it  for  it  to  ever  truly  sting.  whatever  embarrassment  should've  existed  between  them  had  disappeared  somewhere  between  the  chorus  and  the  memories  hitting  harder  than  either  of  them  expected.  she  steps  closer  without  thinking  much  of  it,  cerulean  hues  fixed  on  him  while  excitement  still  flickers  easy  across  softened  features,  blonde  tresses  slipping  over  her  shoulder  as  she  bumps  against  him.  the  microphone  lifts  once  more,  louder  now  just  to  match  his  energy.  "  another  shot  of  whiskey,  can't  stop  lookin'  at  the  door  ...  wishin'  you'd  come  sweepin'  in  the  way  you  did  before,  "  nostalgia  settles  quietly  into  her  expression,  memories  of  dirt  roads,  pinky  promises,  and  plans  to  leave  this  town  together  flashing  through  her  mind  faster  than  she  can  stop  them,  "  and  I  wonder  if  I  ever  cross  your  mind  ...  for  me,  it  happens  all  the  time.  "

“ well, to humiliate yourself the people here would have to remember the performance and something tells me with how many drinks i’ve seen in hand they probably won’t remember much of anything besides their hangovers in the morning. “ a teasing tone within her words. it was nice having a friendly conversation with someone who didn’t take themselves too seriously, a welcome change for her evening. “ fair enough though, some performances are meant to be saved just for ourselves, so i get it. “ eyes glanced towards the current patron on stage, an interesting rendition of you give love a bad name being sang throughout the bar making a smile now grace maroon painted lips. but his next words immediately shifted her attention back to him, “ now how did you know i had a whole thing planned? i was going to pull out some aerosmith, really rock out and maybe even dance up on the bar a bit, you know really get people into the karaoke spirit. “ she joked, with a genuine chuckle escaping her.

"  yeah,  that's  exactly  the  kind  of  logic  someone  would  use  right  before  there's  suddenly  a  blurry  video  of  them  floating  around  town,  "  the  corner  of  his  lips  curling  up,  as  his  gaze  drifted  toward  the  stage  where  a  poor  soul  was  butchering  a  bon  jovi  classic,  "  but,  I'll  give  them  this  confidence  like  that  should  qualify  as  a  medical  condition.  "  his  attention  settling  back  on  her,  as  he  takes  a  sip  from  his  beer,  "  and  honestly  ?  little  terrifying  how  naturally  that  image  fits  you,  though  now  I  can't  tell  if  you're  kiddin'  or  if  I  genuinely  need  to  keep  an  eye  on  you  before  you  climb  up  there  after  another  drink  or  two.  "

"  honestly,  there's  a  good  balance  this  year.  everybody's  talented,  obviously,  and  it  doesn't  feel  like  people  are  fighting  each  other  for  attention  every  five  seconds,  "  tucking  a  strand  of  hair  behind  her  ear  before  continuing,  "  and  the  choreographs  strong  thanks  to  savannah.  some  of  it's  definitely  pushing  people  outta  their  comfort  zones,  but  I  think  that's  where  the  growth  happens.  "  a  small  grin  pulled  at  her  lips  then,  as  legs  cross,  "  I  really  think  this  team  could  end  up  being  something  special  if  we  keep  building  the  way  we  are  now  ..  but  honestly,  shouldn't  savannah  be  your  go  to  for  this  ?  "

for  a  moment,  she  looked  almost  prepared  to  insist  she  had  it  handled.  then  the  top  box  shifted  dangerously  to  one  side,  forcing  her  to  catch  it  quickly  with  a  soft  exhale  through  her  nose.  "  right.  well,  that  answers  that  rather  elegantly,  doesn’t  it  ?  "  a  bit  of  dry  amusement  threading  through  the  words  as  she  attempts  to  steady  the  stack,  blonde  tresses  falling  loosely  over  one  shoulder.  "  I  had  every  intention  of  maintaining  at  least  a  little  dignity  during  this  process.  unfortunately,  these  seem  determined  to  humble  me  publicly,  "  the  faintest  sense  of  a  smile  at  her  lips,  though  somewhat  restrained  but  genuine  enough,  "  but,  yes  I  need  help  ...  though  I  would  prefer  if  we  both  agree  this  never  happened.  "

" glad to be of service, sir. " she teased, chuckling a bit at the other's words. " yeah, i mean, i don't know, i don't think i can handle the embarrassment of possibly messing up one of my all-time favorite songs honestly. however, i might be able to do just that after a few more drinks maybe then i'll definitely have no filter at all. "

"  well,  you  seem  to  already  have  a  plan,  "  gaze  resting  on  her  for  a  moment,  "  but  I  usually  keep  my  hat  low,  my  beer  cold,  and  stay  just  far  enough  from  the  stage  that  nobody  gets  any  bright  ideas  about  handin'  me  a  microphone.  safest  way  to  survive  these  little  shindigs  without  accidentally  endin'  up  duetin'  shania  twain  with  somebody's  aunt  named  debbie.  "

"you call it traumatizin' the place, i call it entertainin' the masses, darlin'. you wouldn't understand that because no one would choose to see you up there, since the only time you're easy on the eyes is when you're on your horse and even then, people tend to like your horse more." sami said, raising her eyebrows at him before smirking. "don't tell me you're scared of a mere mic and a song, hayes."

"  the  fact  you  think  people  would  even  show  up  here  for you and  not  the  trainwreck  factor  is  real  bold,  "  the  smirk  tugging  at  his  lip  deepening  as  he  leaned  in  slightly,  "  and  leave  my  horse  outta  this.  he's  innocent  in  all  your  bad  decisions  ...  but  don't  lie  to  yourself  ?  I  know  me  on  my  horse  makes  you  a  little  hot.  "  his  gaze  drifted  over  her  for  a  brief  second  before  lifting  back  to  meet  her  gaze,  amusement  settling  easy  into  his  features  now.  "  besides,  I  ain't  scared  of  a  mic.  I  just  know  the  second  I  get  up  there,  you're  gonna  be  unbearable  about  it  for  the  rest  of  my  life.  "

"  you  wonderin'  how  ?  "  like  it  was  some  guarded  secret  she  wasn't  sure  she  should  be  givin'  away,  the  corner  of  her  lips  curling  upward  as  she  pushed  herself  off  the  counter.  "  little  bit  of  patience,  little  bit  of  delusion,  and  a  whole  lotta  tips  from  friends  apologizin'  for  their  buddies  afterward,  "  cerulean  hues  drifted  toward  the  stage  for  a  second  at  the  sound  of  another  painfully  off  tune  note  before  settling  back  on  him  again.  "  and  sweetheart,  if  I  had  your  mama  on  speed  dial,  I  would  be  askin'  her  what  kind  of  childhood  led  you  to  voluntarily  order  arnold  palmers  at  a  bar.  though  honestly  ?  "  a  soft  laugh  slipped  free  then,  "  that  might  be  the  most  responsible  thing  anybody's  ordered  all  night.  "

"  first  of  all,  nobody  who  says  '  paying  taxes  on  time  is  called  maturity  '  has  ever  actually  had  fun  a  day  in  their  life.  that  sentence  alone  should  qualify  you  for  a  lower  heart  rate,  "  a  grin  tugging  at  the  corner  of  his  mouth  then,  "  secondly,  surviving  off  gas  station  taquitos and bad  decisions  built  character.  some  of  us  got  personality  from  adversity,  and  not  microsoft  spreadsheets.  "  though  he  very  well  has  gone  to  the  man  regarding  his  own  finances,  but  that  in  itself  was  a  discussion  for  another  day.  he  glances  toward  the  karaoke  crowd  before  looking  back  at  him  again,  "  also,  if  shania  comes  on  and  you  start  doing  finger  guns  to  strangers,  I  promise  you  right  now  nobody's  stopping  you.  hell,  I  might  hype  you  up  myself.  "

"oh,  c'mon,  don't  you  dare  do  that  ...  you  say  miley  cyrus  like  I  wouldn't  absolutely  kill  '  the  climb  '  after  two  whiskey,  "  lifting  his  drink  slightly,  before  pointing  at  her  with  it.  "  and  for  the  record,  I  never  said  I  wouldn't  sing.  I  said  i'm  not  lettin'  this  fundraiser  turn  into  a  public  humiliation  ritual.  besides,  you  say  people  like  the  embarrassing  moments,  but  that  is  not  until  somebody  is  pulling  up  a  video  six  months  later  and  suddenly  i'm  '  mma  fighter  cries  during  karaoke  night  '  forever.  "
