People saying Hiro doesn’t “look Asian enough” need to stop. First from what I’m hearing he may be a mix of Caucasian and Asian and that’s exactly what he looks like. He looks like me (except I’m a girl) which makes sense because I am also a mix of Caucasian and Asian. I have spent my entire life being told by people (mostly Caucasians) that I “don’t count” as Asian because I “don’t look Asian enough”. It is incredibly offensive. There is no check list of facial features that determine wether or not someone “looks Asian enough”. Race doesn’t work that way and genetics don’t work that way either. This is a problem that people of mixed race often go through and it’s incredibly offensive to see that when Disney finally gives us the first mixed race main character people are using that as a way to call them out on “white washing”. Stop doing this. You do not decide a what determines a person or characters race based on your preconceptions of what “makes” someone that race and there is no such thing as “not Asian enough” or “not Hispanic enough” or anything like that. Your not helping issues of representation you are actually making things worse. Please stop

DO YALL REALIZE MARINETTE IS CHINESE?? SHE IS POC EVEN THOUGH SHES DEF WHITEWASHED IN THE SHOW. honestly I’m pumped do u know how rare it is to have representation, not just Asian representation but mixed-race representation!!? like I have so much to say on this topic but. Guys. She’s Asian. !!!!!!!

Hi, Chinese mixed person here (I’m half-Chinese and half-Puerto Rican), and I while I understand your point and other commenters points that Marinette’s Chinese identity is not overtly presented in show I would be careful about using terms like “whitewashed” in this context. Although I am part of two minorities there are many other people who are mixed white, including many people who are half Asian and half white. Mixed race people are just that: mixed race. Having one race be white does not erase the other race from their identity. To say someone is whitewashed when discussing the features of mixed race person or character is a very loaded thing to say, as it implies that their other racial identity has been overtaken by their whiteness. It makes sense that Marinette’s isn’t appearance overtly Asian, mine isn’t either, nor is my sister’s. Many mixed race people often do not look like all the races they identify as; it is part of the nature of being mixed race. That being said they have touched upon elements of her culture before, for example as someone who has struggled her whole life with Mandarin I appreciated her apt use of a translation app in Kung Food. I too would love to see more Chinese culture in show, so I hope we see more of it in season 2. I hope this perspective of a mixed race person might help you see where the creators are coming from with certain design decisions. I’m also super happy to have more mixed race characters in TV and movies, so I hope this trend continues into the future. :)

(im the same person as @moderneon in the replies fyi) Thanks for your perspective @yumerri :) I’m half Chinese and half white myself, and so are my siblings and several people I know irl. TBH, I probably shouldn’t have put “whitewashing” in my post– it’s a loaded word and I didn’t really expect my post to get attention. I do like that the show did touch on her culture, though I’ll always have reservations about what they could have done differently. I agree that being part white doesn’t take away from the part that is Asian. My comment mostly stemmed from my disappointment that there wasn’t more influence of her culture on her daily life. While I know the Asian experience is different for everyone, it just seems to me that the only part of her home life affected by Asian culture is her mom’s outfit. You don’t see Chinese food, or decorations, or academic expectations, or habits like taking shoes off at the door. This could be that her mom isn’t a first-generation immigrant, but I just get the impression that although Marinette is shown to be Chinese, it doesn’t really feel that way. All that said, I really am happy and delighted and proud that a character, for once, is not only Asian but represents me. (I can only name two other main characters who are also half white, half Asian.) Marinette is a dream come true for me, just because she exists. Also thanks guys for the discourse!! It’s been educational :)
