I'm so happy that my first fanfic will be about PLAVE, so I hope you all enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. I will warn that I wrote this with the intention of Hamin and [Name] having those kind of friendships that looks like they are a couple but they actually aren't, so you can interpret the relationship however you prefer. Please enjoy this reading! β‘
I peek a glance at the clock for the tenth time in the past hour. My body feels sweaty from all the aggressive movements, and my feet are starting to hurt badly because of all the hours Iβve been standing and moving around. My mind tried to remember when the last time was that I took a proper break. Not a βdrink waterβ break, but a proper break from dancing. Itβs probably been hours since the last time I stepped out of the room to catch my breath and relax properly, and even though I tried to push past the exhaustion, my body knew I was bringing it to its limits. My mind was also exhausted from hours of hearing the same music over and over again, repeating the same movements until I was able to perform them by pure internal instinct, as if it was as natural as breathing. It's not that I donβt like the music Iβve been practising with. The songs I was hired to perform in concert were from my favourite K-pop group, but the constant repetition of the same part of the song over and over again, and the need to review every movement in extreme detail, would make anyone find it exhausting, even a bit annoying at some point.Β
Iβve been working with a company of backup dancers for a few years now. My team is normally hired to perform in concerts, music videos, music stages, etc. We usually work on anything that needs to be filled up with a few backup dancers to enhance the performance of artists. A few weeks before, while I was taking a shower in the changing room of the company building,Β I was able to overhear from some of my coworkers some of the new projects we might be participating in, where one name caught my attention over the other projects.Β
βYou know that idol group. What was it called? Oh yes, PLAVEβ
βYeah, what about it?β
βThey seem to have started planning to have a concert in different places, and seem to have contacted our company for it.β
After hearing that conversation, a glimpse of excitement rose as Iβve been a fan of PLAVE since their debut days. I couldnβt bear the excitement, so I rushed back home as fast as I could, and after arriving at my place, I took out my phone and began trying to search for information about the events like a total fangirl who is overly excited for the news.Β
After their first year of debut, their name became well-known among Korean citizens and people who listen to K-pop. It's been two years since their debut, and their popularity has become so huge that they have had the opportunity to finally organise a concert for their fans. Not only were they going to hold concerts in different stadiums, but also concerts in other countries. The love of their fans was able to bring them amazing opportunities to the point of being able to perform in front of thousands of people. As a fan, this news can only make me proud, but the thought of possibly dancing with them? It was another level of a dream.
It truly would be a great opportunity not only to work alongside people who had been a great inspiration for me in recent years, but also to because I would be able to work side by side with one of my childhood best friends.Β
Iβve known Hamin since we were both in kindergarten. The memories of how we first talked were a bit fuzzy, probably because we were so young that none of us could actually remember how it happened, but the memories we spent together doing stuff were more vivid in our memories. I still remember how we would play together during recess time, playing games like hide and seek and imagining how we were fighting the most horrendous enemies while acting as the best superheroes to have ever existed. Of course, knowing someone since childhood doesnβt guarantee that you will still get along with them in the future as we both grow up, but luckily for us, that wasnβt a problem for us. Even though in high school we werenβt able to share the same classes anymore, we still found time to spend together with each other. Our homes were close to each other, so it was common for both of us to wait for the other and walk back home while we talked about our highlights of the day, whether they were happy moments or more depressing ones. During those years, Hamin began picking up an interest in taekwondo while I began with dancing, something that eventually caught Hamin's attention and he started practising with me too.Β
All those memories were important for me, but my most appreciated memory happened during the last months of high school. During those months, we both started discussing what we wanted to achieve in the future and what we actually planned on doing after we finished our mandatory education. I began talking about how I wanted to dedicate my life to dancing, while Hamin strived to become something even more difficult. After hearing him say he wanted to eventually become an idol, I could only feel the need to show my support to him, but the idea that we would be working in the entertainment sector brought happiness to my heart. Not only does it mean we would see each other in the future, but also that there could be a little possibility of working together. That day, before the bell rang to rush back down to our classrooms, Hamin proposed a promise to me not to stop seeing each other after high school. A promise to keep in touch at least once a week to talk about our lives like weβve been doing for years. Even though Hamin is not a very expressive guy and is very talkative, he shows affection through actions, and that promise showed me how concerned he was about us parting ways and with it the end of a friendship as we both enter adulthood. At that moment, all I could do was confidently smile at him and promise him to keep in touch after high school, not knowing the difficult times we would be crossing as we finally enter adulthood.Β
Time began testing the friendship weβve been building for years since childhood. Our lives have got busier over time, and spending time together to hang out is no longer an option. As soon as I got hired by the company, my days became packed with different practice sessions and with events I had to participate in. On the other side, Hamin had to focus on trying to build his idol career, whether it was with auditions, dance practices and singing training. At some point, I started to grow worried for Hamin. I would text him at least once a week to check how he was doing, but most of the time, I was left unread and unreplied to. I never took it personally, as I knew he was probably reading those texts after a long day of training, and he probably was too tired to answer. He would sometimes reply, but it would normally be small texts, probably just to let me know he was still alive. But I would always try to send him messages of encouragement, trying to lift up his spirits with a few words of positivity because I knew he probably needed them, and I knew he would eventually read them.Β
I remember the first time I saw Hamin after a long time of not seeing each other. I was shopping for my weekly food in the grocery store, and while walking through the electronics section, I recognised one of the faces of the people who were performing on one of the TV screens. I stopped on my tracks and began to immerse myself in the music video. I always knew he was an amazing dancer, but hearing him sing and rap moved my heart. I was able to notice how much he has polished his dancing movements, how strong he has become over time and his eyes showed more maturity than the photos we took on graduation day. He had a mysterious, kind of shy vibe around him, but I felt happy to finally see him stepping into his long-time dream.
At first, I felt relief knowing he had finally debuted as an idol, but the moment I heard his voice after so many years made me feel emotions I forgot they even existed inside me. It was a weird feeling, but I felt proud of him. I began to question myself about how much struggle he had to go through to be able to finally debut as an idol, but something in his eyes through the screen told me he was fine. He is doing fine, and thatβs the only thing that matters. I left the electronics aisle with a big smile, happy and proud to see Hamin starting his career path.Β
After their debut, I started following the group. I would watch all their lives and their comebacks. Haminβs skills improved greatly as the group released new songs, and I eventually became familiar with the other members too. If I already liked their songs and choreographies, their chemistry as a group made me become a fan of the whole group.Β
These recent years have been times when time tore Hamin and me apart, where our own dreams and goals kept us from seeing each other very often, which is why I jumped for joy when I received the phone call from my agency confirming I would be one of the selected dancers to participate in PLAVEβs concert as a backup dancer. After answering the phone call in the most professional voice I could give, I began jumping around my flat. The excitement in my heart was too much to downplay it. In my head, I began imagining sharing a stage with Hamin and the other members. Even though I would only be a backup dancer, that meant we would probably see each other during dance practices. I felt as if destiny had finally decided we had passed the time test and had finally decided to reunite us again, to finally work together and spend time with each other. It was also an opportunity to show him what Iβm currently capable of in dancing and to amaze him as much as he has done with me when I heard him sing in that new cover song Hamin has released.
All these events bring us to the present, where I currently find myself practising one of PLAVEβs choreographies with the dance crew. We still had two weeks before the first concert, but the intensity of those practice sessions was hard. While I was used to dancing with intensity for long hours, I felt I needed to practice more to get everything perfect to the millimetre. After long hours of practising in the studio, I would normally get home and continue practising for an hour or two more. It was intense, but I was determined to show Hamin my absolute best.Β
βOkay, guys! One last time and then we can all go home,β said the choreographer with energy, but his eyes clearly show he was already tired and wanted to go home. Truth be told, it is obvious how tired everyone is at the moment. Most of the dance crew were just with a serious face, remembering the mental notes they had made to themselves during the whole practice in order to correct them and achieve the perfection the choreographer wanted in our performance. Not only were we tired, but most of us were already hungry. Now I really want to eat something good after practice.Β
The sound of music broke my train of thoughts, and we all began to coordinate ourselves as the music kept going. My feet were already tired, but knowing this was the last time we would practice before going home made me want to try to perform the last one the best I could. My muscles began to react to the tempo of the music, putting extra effort in every move I made as if my life depended on it. I felt sweaty from dancing for long hours before, but my body moved as if it had never danced before. The strength of an elephant and the precision of an arrow hitting its target. My hair moved like it was defying gravity and my feet moved at great speed. My mind was too deep in the music to the point that I finally enjoyed the choreography as I looked at myself dancing in the mirror. βI would finally show Hamin how much I had improved.β I thought before stopping all movement in my body
Something in my knee moved, but not the way it was supposed to move. Pain began to run through my leg, making me moan in pain. My mind began to be filled with adrenaline, trying to find a solution to end the pain. I hugged my knee with both my arms, but lost balance and fell to the floor. I don't know when, but suddenly the music stopped and everyone was standing around me. Different words came out of their mouths, but I heard nothing. I could only concentrate on the pain I felt at the moment.Β
I heard one of my dance crew friends call out my name. I snapped out of the trance of pain and looked at her as I tried to take deep breaths.
I did everything I could just to not cry out of pain in front of everyone.
The pain gradually began to go down. Someone recommended me to try to stretch out my leg. I tried and, lucky for me, I was able to stretch my leg. It was painful, but being able to move my leg probably meant it was nothing too bad. From the looks of it, it was probably nothing too serious, such as a broken bone, but it was enough to make it painful to move.Β
My friend offer herself to drive me to the hospital to check on my knee and I agreed. They helped me stand up, and with the help of my friend, we walked out of the building and jumped into her car with hopes that it really wasnβt anything too serious that would make me stay in bed for months.Β
I finally found myself back in my best friend's car with her driving me home after the doctor's check-up at the hospital. Even though I told her I could manage myself,Β my friend has been kind enough to actually stay with me the whole time, ignoring my persistent attempts in trying to send her home. I knew even though I was injured, she wasnβt, which meant she had dance practice tomorrow. It was already 1 am, but she insisted on driving me home just to make sure I didn't end up falling again and causing another unnecessary accident.Β
During the car ride, we had a very vivid conversation while I looked out the window into the night city. We both tried to talk about stuff that didnβt have anything to do with work or with the fact that I was injured. Instead, we talked about a new cafe place we should go to, plans for holidays, and new TV shows we are currently watching. We talked about everything until we finally reached the building I live in. She stopped the car in front of the door and helped me get out of the car with utmost care, and helped me walk up to the elevator. After finally reaching the floor, I walked a few steps before taking off my backpack to search for my keys. I located the keys and opened the door to immediately turn on the lights. She helped me to walk up to my bed and asked if I needed anything else before leaving.
βNo, Iβm good. Thank you for everything, really.β
She just smiled and said that is something that any friend would do, but I knew that not many friends would stay with you in times of need. I truly felt lucky.Β
After she left my flat, I sat down on the edge of the bed, trying my best to reach my drawers so I could change into my clothes to normal pyjamas. After choosing at random one of my pyjamas, I stood up from the bed and hopped all the way to the sofa. I really wasnβt in the mood to sleep or be in bed.Β
I finally found myself at home, with my leg up on the sofa couch with a bag of ice on top of my knee as I scrolled through social media posts. I looked at the time my phone screen showed, but my mind and body werenβt feeling sleepy at all. Even though my knee still felt sore and my eyes were on the screen, my mind was elsewhere.Β
Lucky for me, the doctor told me it was just a sudden dislocation of my knee. Inflammation would eventually appear around my knee, but they told me to just take it easy for a few weeks and to put something cold on top of it to reduce the inflammation. I was lucky enough not to need medicine or any complicated procedures, but it was painful to walk or even bend my leg. I wasnβt very convinced by the doctor's diagnosis, but I didnβt know what else to do, so I just had to go with what they told me.Β
As I scrolled through my phone, I ended up encountering the most recent PLAVEβs post. A post about their upcoming concert, naming which cities they will be visiting. The comments were all of excitement for the upcoming event which will be happening in two weeks.
Not enough time for me to recover properly to be able to dance to my fullest. Not enough time to practice the choreography with the dance crew. Not enough time to be able to perform alongside my childhood best friend.
I tried drowning my thoughts with some mindless scrolling, but it clearly wasnβt helping. I felt my heart sink in as I continued scrolling through different posts that PLAVE had posted on their social media. The admiration I felt for that group was huge, and I somehow saw the dream of performing for them slipping away from the tip of my fingers. I closed my eyes, trying to calm down my thoughts and emotions. This was a dumb thing to cry about, but why did my body want so desperately to let the frustration out?Β
Β I felt a small tear begin to run through my cheeks, but suddenly my phone began to ring. I opened my eyes and read the contact name of the number calling me.
A contact name I wrote for Hamin as a joke many years ago appeared on my screen. I looked at the screen with a surprised but confused face. I began asking myself why he would be calling me this late at night, but then I decided to answer his phone call. Different possibilities rushed through my mind for why he might be calling me.Β
βMaybe he needed a lift? No, that doesnβt make senseβ¦ money? A favour? Or did he just need to talk?βΒ
Whatever the reason it was, it was clear it was important. Hamin was never the kind of guy to show his emotions openly, but he shows his love for other people through actions and affection. The last time he called me was about half a year ago, so it truly meant it was something important. I pressed the button and answered his call.
βHamin! Iβm so happy to see you calling me. How are you? Is everything okay? Iβm not complaining about you calling me, but itβs a bit late alreadyβ¦ Do you need anything?β I asked, waiting to hear his voice on the other side of the phone. I tried to answer the call in a cheerful tone, but his last words showed I was worried about the reason for his call. I knew that if he needed something that required me to move, I wasnβt in the best physical condition to do so, but if he just needed to talk, I would always be there for him.
βI'm so glad to hear your voice. Your company called us saying one of the backup dancers was injured, but when I heard your name, I got worried. Are you okay?β
Of course I wasnβt completely okay, but it was in my nature to answer in a cheerful way that wouldnβt make him too worried about me.Β
βWell, I dislocated my knee, and now Iβm here on the sofa. Iβm okay since I didnβt break any bones, but wellβ¦ not so okay at the same time. For now it's just inflammation, but I have to do some medical tests in the future.β
βWhy didnβt you tell me before you were working for our concert? I would have helped you practice, and we could have seen each other more often.β
That question froze me for a few seconds. Even I didnβt know the real reason why I decided to keep it quiet from him about the new job. Maybe I just wanted to surprise him with my dancing skills, but some part of me knew that wasnβt the only reason. I knew we were close, but at the same time, we werenβt able to have a proper conversation for a long time. But I couldnβt give that answer to him.
βI wanted to surprise you. I guess my plan backfired hahahaβ
And even after the distance that life has drifted us apart, he still felt worried for me, and I was able to read and understand his silence.
βI see. I just wanted to make sure if you were okay or if you needed anything.β There was silence for a few seconds until he asked me, βWould it sound crazy if I told you Iβm outside your door with food for you?β
βYou are where-β
I looked away from my phone, up to the door. Was he really standing out there in the cold dark night by himself all this time? I stood up from the couch as fast as my body would let me at the moment, and peeped out the door. Through the crystal of the peephole, I could see Haminβs face with a faint smile. He was wearing a hoodie in the middle of the night, probably to prevent any fans from recognising him while he walked through the streets, but the way his eyes radiated a warm vibe told me everything. It really was him. I opened the door and found Hamin standing in front of me with two bags, one in each hand, looking at me with the same expression he wore when he waved me good morning every day back in high school. That soft smile that would make your worries go away, bathing you in a warm feeling in your heart.
βI hope I didnβt wake you up with my call. They told me everything, and I began to worry about you. I couldnβt wait to check on you. So, your knee is badly injured?β
βYeah, well, as I said before, I still need to do some medical checkups, but for now itβs okay. Itβs a bit frustrating, but what else can I really do?β I said in a light tone as I laughed it up, but it was more of an awkward laugh, trying to hide internal pain. He saw me laugh, and while he kept up his soft smile, I noticed how he was trying to judge if I was actually okay or if I was demeaning my own pain.
βI bought you some medicine and your favourite food. I thought maybe this would cheer you up.β
βReally? Thatβs so sweet of you. Come in. We can eat it together over some TV show or anime, if you want.βΒ
After the invitation, he quickly accepted with a slightly bigger smile, as if he was happy that we still trusted each other enough for me to invite him to my flat. As I took a step in, he followed me behind and closed the door. As I limped back to the sofa, he placed the food and the medicine on the kitchen counter. My place wasnβt that big. It was meant to be enough for one person, but big enough not to go crazy or to feel claustrophobic. The overall tidiness of the flat wasnβt exactly perfect. The past few weeks I spent training, and when I was at home I felt too tired to actually try to properly clean the whole house.Β
βThank you for the food. I hope you donβt find the flat very untidy.βΒ
βNo, it's okay. And donβt thank me for the food. Itβs the minimum I should do as a friend.β
He has been to my house a couple of times, but it's like he really knows where everything is. He has always had a good memory, so he quickly found where I store the plates and glasses. He put the food he bought for me on plates, brought them to the living room and served me a glass of water. He did the same with his food and sat next to me on the sofa.Β
βI hope your tastes havenβt changed since the last time I saw you.β A small silence rose as I took a plate of food with hunger in my stomach. I took a bite of the food and quickly smiled. The taste was as good as I remembered, making my whole body relax and my mind drift away as I savoured the food. Hamin did remember my preferences in food.Β
Hamin then asked, βAre you really okay?β and my heart dropped. Something about the tone he used really made me act differently from the other times he asked. I knew my knee wasnβt okay, but I knew he wasnβt asking exactly about my knee.Β
When I looked up from my food, I met his deep eyes. I felt how my breath was suddenly taken away for a moment, how the feeling I tried to ignore and forget was starting to rise again. Those obscure thoughts I tried to push down while scrolling through my phone began to get into the light of my mind.Β
Β I looked back down at my food and began telling him all of my worries and my thoughts. Probably not the best course of action, considering it's been a while since the last time we had a proper conversation, but his presence was like the comfort of the night. He was able to make me feel comfortable enough to let my guard down and feel the embrace of the faint moonlight as I let my worries escape my mind and mouth.Β
βI feel stupid. The dance crew will have problems finding someone new to replace me with so little time for your performance. I was excited to finally be able to perform alongside you. I remember how much we would fantasise about being able to perform together and pour our hearts into it. I know it was probably a dumb dream, but you are special to me. Iβve admired you for so long before you even debuted, and I felt so happy to finally be able to work beside you andβ¦ I fucked up everything. I know it sounds dumb, but I genuinely was excited for it.β
As I spoke my thoughts and worries, Hamin heard with utmost attention. He wasnβt saying a word during the speech, but his silence showed me more than a thousand words about him. Hamin was never a very expressive guy, but his actions and words were enough to show how much he actually cared for someone. Iβve seen how he acts with the other members of his group, and I remember how his silence can comfort even the most distraught souls. He knew when it was time to talk and when it was time to listen to their friends' problems.Β
After I finished talking, he gently brushed a strand of my hair that was covering my face back to my ear. He moved his body in a small jump to take a closer seat to mine and gently placed his right hand on top of my head and began to brush my hair gently. Each brush he did to my hair made my heart beat slowly. It wasnβt the kind of brute physical contact, but the one that makes you realise how much his love is for you. The shock of the contact broke me away from the dark swirl of thoughts. I opened my teary eyes and met his calming gaze. Those deep green eyes that remind everybody of a sweet black cat were staring at me, not worried, but understanding. A stare so unique that it makes you realise he actually understood the struggles you were rambling about. Hamin was listening, he understood, and he was feeling your problems like they were his own problems.
βDonβt say it sounds dumb, because your problems are never dumb. What happened was just an accident. Accidents happen all the time. I, at some point, was in your same place. Practising every day without stopping, sacrificing everything for just a grasp of attention. This industry is tough, and I can understand why you were pressing your body to your limits.β
He then pulled his hand away from my hair, gently wrapped his arm around my shoulders, and let me drown my own body in his warm hug as I rested my head on his shoulder. He gently brushed another strand of hair away from my face and tugged it behind my ear, just for him to gently brush my shoulders in circular motions.Β
βIβm sorry this happened to you.β, Hamin said in a low voice. βThe only takeaway from this experience is to know your own limits, and if you want to push them, remember to give your body time to adapt. Be careful next time. Donβt worry about the dance crew for now and worry about being able to heal properly. And for us performing togetherβ¦ we will have other opportunities for it.β
I wanted to complain about that last comment. In my head, I understood life doesnβt always offer you opportunities like this. Most of the time, opportunities are like shooting stars. When they appear, they bring you joy and excitement for a wish being able to come true. But as quickly as they come, is the same when they go.
Hamin noticed my face of discomfort in his words, and he gently shook my body for me to look at his face. He wasnβt going to let me go to sleep with worries on my mind and tears streaming down my face.Β
βI promise you it won't be the last time we will be able to dance together. Truth be told, I also miss dancing with you. Iβ¦ sometimes feel bad for not responding to all your text messages or being as present in your life as youβve been through mine. The way your text messages gave me courage in the most obscure moments of my life reminds me that there is always another opportunity, another shooting star waiting for me.β His voice began to break a little bit as his lips said words, but his eyes were able to show how much story there is behind those words. βYou helped me a lot during the moments that I needed it the most with your encouraging messages and positive energy. I owe you a lot, and I promise to be in contact with you more often. Iβll do everything in my power so we can work together again.βΒ
He extended one of his arms to one of the clean napkins he brought for the food and cleaned up the tears off my cheeks.Β
βBesides, you look way more beautiful when you are smiling and laughing.β, Hamin chuckled. I chuckled slightly with him as I heard his comment, finally feeling some happiness and brightness in the situation and all the worries.Β
βFor now, donβt worry about anything else, except healing properly so you can go back to dancing with full energy and health. Alsoβ¦I can stay for a few days with you to help you out in anything you need, if you let me, of course.β
That last comment wasnβt something to take lightly. While itβs true it would be a great help to have someone around, I quickly remembered he was getting ready for a big concert. He needed to concentrate on their next comeback and on their concert tour. It was an important period for him and PLAVE, and making him stay with me wasnβt going to help them at all.
Quickly, I didnβt waste a second telling him my worries about his idea of staying with me.Β
βHamin, you have important work right now. You canβt stay here. You need to focus.β
βIβll move here for a while until you recover properly, or until they give you a proper diagnosis. Please, let me stay with you and take care of you. Let me pay you back for everything youβve done for me.β
He hesitated for a moment, but then took both of my hands and covered my hands with his. His expression showed total seriousness about his words, like he could die in that exact moment if I told him no. When he was determined about something, he would work his way around it to make it happen. He always acted like that, so I quickly figured it would be a waste of time if I actually spent time debating his decision.Β
βFineβ, I said in a defeated tone. βJust promise I wonβt be a distraction to your work. I really would hate to see you unprepared for your next comeback and concert.β
Hamin instantly smiled. The way his eyes closed slightly and the way the side of his lips moved upwards showed how pleased he was with my answer. I wasnβt going to complain either. I always liked his company, and we could always use some free time to get closer again as we used to and to do stuff we both actually enjoy, besides dancing, of course.Β
For some reason, every time he smiles like that it reminds me of a small kid smiling after buying their favourite candy. It probably reminds me of that because we actually did that in the past, but seeing how, after everything in life, he kept that same comforting smile was reassuring in some kind of way. We both are used to always working for things to change for the better that we sometimes forget that some things in front of us are perfect as they are.Β
Being able to have someone in your life who has seen you at your lowest and at your highest puts them on another level of personal closeness. And even if at some point in life the distance between that person becomes further, you must trust them even in the distance that life will somehow work its magic to make you reunite with them again. And when they appear knocking at your front door with a bag full of your favourite food, it's important to invite them to eat the food with you.
βThank you for letting me stay, [Name]. Iβll do my best to take care of you.β
I push him slightly away from me in a playful way.Β
βJust shut up and let's eat.β, I said as I grabbed my food again and extended my arm to take the TV remote that was on a small table beside the sofa. βDo you still like this anime, Hamin?β
