English is not my first language!!!!!
All week, Matt texted her first, trying to keep the conversation going and hoping that Berry would feel less lonely in a strange city. But she, on the contrary, tried to answer as simply as possible, afraid to get to know him better. Afraid to become friends and get attached. When he invited her to walk around the port the other day, she came up with the most common excuses, like 'Oh, I need to clean the house. Oh, I don't feel well.' She knew that this was the only way she could lose contact with anyone. But she simply didn't know how to do it any other way. So she spent her days lying in bed, watching social media, movies, or saving baking recipes that she would never make due to laziness or a lack of ingredients. In the evenings and at night, she still saw Matt through the windows of each other's houses, but everything was limited to a nod and a slight smile.
Just recently, Berry thought she'd literally die without people around her, that this was the end, and all that lay ahead were pills or an open window. Now she still worried about it, but she was starting to get used to it. It was a relief that this was a new city where she wouldn't be able to see those familiar faces or those warm places that simultaneously made her heart ache and ache to the point of tears. No one knew her here, which meant nothing would hurt.
Matt's distance lasted until Mrs. Sturniolo came to visit Mara on Wednesday evening to get to know her better and become friends. Matt seized the opportunity and, of course, decided to come, knowing it was either meeting now or not until the end of the summer.
So when Berry saw him on the threshold of their house, she immediately hesitated, begging the universe to let her evaporate at least for this evening.
"Mary Lou, come in! Oh, are you Chris?" Mara asked hesitantly, afraid of making a mistake, even though she did.
"I'm Matt, it's okay, we get confused often," he laughed as he walked into the house and also stood shyly to the side.
"Oh, I'm so sorry! As I know, you and Berry already know each other, she'll show you to her room. Take something tasty with you." Mara continued to be polite, already placing a tray with a teapot, cups, and a plate of various goodies on the coffee table in front of the sofa, where Matt's mother was already sitting.
Berry immediately gathered everything she needed and nodded for Matt to follow her. They climbed to the second floor and walked down a small hallway to her room. Once inside, he immediately began to examine everything. The ceiling was hung with pastel purple and blue tulle and garlands with stars. Movie and band posters, small drawings of unicorns, fake daggers, and a fake deer skull hung on the walls. On the dresser, he noticed a silver tray with a couple of candles and various stones, resembling a mini altar. A simple dark blue blanket lay on the window where she always sat, and a simple garland hung from a horse. Her bed was filled with various pillows and blankets, providing back support.
"You look like you're in a museum," Berry giggled, putting the marmalade, chips, soda, and other junk food on her bed, leaving room on the sides so they could sit opposite each other.
"I feel like I'm really into it. Not in a bad way, not at all." Matt glanced in her direction, then walked over to her bookcase and began examining and touching some things.
"Do you want to watch something? I honestly have no idea what else we can do."
"Yeah. Why not. Have you watched The Amazing World of Gumball?" Matt continued to examine every detail of her room, slowly approaching her bed, where Berry was already sitting with her laptop and practically typing into a search engine: "What to play if a neighbor comes to visit?"
"Oh, yeah! I'm probably already somewhere around season two or three... then let's watch this."
This immediately calmed her down, as she adored the cartoon, so she wouldn't have to watch another stupid movie where the actors act like mannequins. They both settled more comfortably on the bed and immediately began opening the sweets and dumping them into one huge bowl, not at all afraid of mixing everything together at once.
After a few episodes, when both Matt and Berry felt comfortable enough to start a conversation, they stopped being silent altogether.
"So why did they even name you Berry? Like, is that your real name, or has everyone been calling you that since you were a kid and that's why you introduce yourself that way now."
"That's my real name. At first, I even had some complexes about it. Come on, all my classmates were named Evelina, Lily, Audrey, Hannah. And I'm Berry. Why not fucking Cucumber? Over time, I even accepted it, now even considering it a charm. But yeah, sometimes I'm shocked by my biological parents."
"Wait, what? Biological?" the shock evident on his face as a gummy shark nearly fell out of his mouth.
Panic immediately washed over Berry, realizing she'd revealed the biggest secret of her life. She hadn't intended to tell him, especially not to Matt. If she was bringing it up, it meant she was starting to get used to him.
As soon as I start to get used to it, it means I'll soon become attached
"Damn... it was actually a secret. I- just forget it if you can."
"Okay, I'm not forcing you. But I wouldn't mind waiting until you're ready. Don't think it's bad that you're adopted. I'm sorry... that's it, I'm keeping quiet.
Honestly, Berry didn't expect Matt to be so calm and understanding about the situation. When she told people she trusted about it, they immediately started making jokes and calling her names. And when they texted her about her shortcomings before disappearing from her life, they never missed a chance to say something like, "No wonder your biological parents abandoned you."
Each time it hit her harder and harder, but now, when she saw understanding and even some regret in his eyes, Berry wanted to cry not from the memories but from the understanding with which Matt treated it. In an instant, she wanted to tell him about all her problems, confide in him all her secrets and hope that this man wouldn't leave like all the others.
Smiling, she brushed away the tears that had appeared in her eyes as discreetly as possible.
The rest of the evening, which had already turned into night, went well. They laughed at the cartoon, almost cried because of their stomach pains from the amount of junk food, and tried to wash it all down with plenty of water, hoping that it would make the pain go away. By the end, they were already beginning to fall asleep, but Mary Lou took Matt in just in time, because he was already on the verge of falling asleep for the next seven hours.
Berry fell asleep thinking that maybe Matt was finally the one she should open up to and trust. Maybe she wouldn't be too much for him.
okay, I literally cried while writing all this...
