ppl are so mad in the replies to this tweet but op is literally right
god forbid Black women have fun
Black woman invents or popularises a phrase -> it enters the vernacular and circulates widely amongst Black and nonblack people -> people removed from the phrase's initial context read it too literally, do not interpret it with sensitivity, assume that the ideas expressed when people use it are shallow / "over"-sexualised / problematic in some way or another that mirrors their feelings about Black people as a whole -> there is a backlash where a supposedly more 'thoughtful,' 'subversive,' etc. alternative to the initial phrase is offered, implying that the initial phrase contained none of that complexity within it to begin with -> rinse & repeat

"shipping and blorbofication are not inherently at odds with understanding a story's deep themes" and "some people can't grasp the themes of a story because they never learned how to engage with stories outside of the lens of shipping and blorbofication" are two statements that can coexist
blorbofication to me is when you love a character in such a laser focus way that you somewhat detach them from the narrative from which they are inserted and treat them in a way roughly similar to how you'd treat an oc for which you still have no story and just like to put them in situations just for fun. which there's nothing wrong with btw, it's just that it can easily lead to people forgetting the character engine in a narrative and not just a barbie doll
shoutout to the woman from my high school martial arts class who liked to get me in joint locks and then joke about how I was easy to catch. you cannot comprehend how psychosexually formative that was for me
imagine, if you will, having an adolescent half-crush on someone way older than you, which is also confusingly blurred up with admiration of them as a role model. now imagine that you and that person are in a social environment where it is acceptable to (platonically, consensually) choke someone. I think I was very normal about it considering the circumstances
she would demonstrate takedowns on her husband (also in the class, and who was not a small man) before we got to try them and the first time I saw her twist him around and down onto the floor like it was easy my entire abdomen clenched
I cannot stress enough how eager this guy was to be manhandled (womanhandled?) and flipped around by his wife. he was her de facto guinea pig whenever she got to teach and I never saw him unenthusiastic about it. he'd set himself up for a joint lock fully smiling. the other adults in the class occasionally teased him about it (being so quick to let your wife put you in a submission hold tends to raise a few eyebrows), and I always kind of wanted to defend him but what would I have said? like, don't worry. I won't judge you. I also like being pinned down by your wife
That last sentance really hits ya like a psychosexually formative takedown
get up and fight me like 3 horses
based on a conversation my gf and I had
if you were to watch an internet personality try to make dr. pepper flavored infused vodka
which would you find more interesting?
infuse the 21 spices that comprise the flavor of dr. pepper individually
reduce some dr. pepper into a solid puck over the stove, then infuse that
there is NO "both and then compare them" option because that's obviously the most interesting

I will follow you into the dark
Yo doc watching Red ranger becomes an adventurer on another world what do you have to scratch the Sentai itch.
THEME: Sentai Isekai
Hello! I wasn't sure if you wanted a game that speaks to feeling of the anime you mentioned or if you wanted a Sentai game specifically, so I tried to include a little bit of both. I've got a few sentai games, a few isekai games, and a few games that really embrace the power of friendship!
POWER/RANGERS, by The Lone Gunman.
POWER/RANGERS is a sentai hack of DISASTER/PEACE, by A Couple of Drakes. The system is derived from Forged in the Dark games such as Blades in the Dark and Scum & Villainy. Inspired by Japan’s super sentai genre, POWER/RANGERS is made to tell stories of teenagers with attitudes, given power they are unprepared to have and thrust into conflicts against terrifying forces of evil while trying to balance a personal life.
This game is a sentai game with a focus on the problems that teenagers experience, likely balancing their own at-home dilemmas while also trying to defend the world. It's Forged in the Dark, which means that you'll often be stressing out your character for the moments in which you really want to succeed, chipping away at problems represented as clocks over the course of a mission.
What's interesting to me is that Position and Effect, a common difficulty matrix to FitD games, appears to be something that can steadily and consistently change, up until a player Surges. A Surge is the result of destabilizing - powering up too much until you can't handle it, likely putting everyone back on an even playing field after trying so hard to gain an advantage.
This is likely to be a little less of a power-fantasy, and a little more serious in tone, especially since your characters are teenagers with a lot of weight on their shoulders. But if you want some of those stakes present, you might really enjoy POWER/RANGERS.
This World Summons Too Many Heroes, by Nick Duff.
This World Summons Too Many Heroes!! is a tabletop rpg about regular people being pulled into a fantasy world to become heroes, demon lords, goblins, talking swords, or any kind of adventurer you could think of! Go on an isekai adventure in the Kingdoms of Ceria, where summoning scrolls have been scattered across the countryside and people are recklessly using them to steal people from other worlds and bring them into this one with new powers gifted to them by a goddess of reincarnation.
Here is an option for folks who are more interested in the isekai part of this request. Designed on the LUMEN system, This World Summons Too Many Heroes is all about the power fantasy of the Isekai genre, with the idea that every player is someone of special power. I don't know if there is any archetype or class in this book that is specifically a power ranger, although I think LUMEN is an easy enough system to hack that you could probably create a suitable Power Ranger class after giving the game a whirl. This is a great option for folks who want to feel both powerful and effective.
EVOL, by BNIN.
A Cycle Broken… A Future Stolen… Evolution in reverse, nearly halted altogether…! Nearly… but not completely. There is still time. And where there is time, there is also hope. From The Dust, A New Generation Of Heroes is Realized…! New Legends are birthed from the ashes! What manner of legend will you be?
Another Sentai specific game, EVOL pulls from FATE Accelerated, Fabula Ultima, and Magic the Gathering. I expect this to be a game that relies heavily on teamwork, and building each member of the team up and up until you collaboratively reach a climactic success. The game has a few supplements available on the game creator's Itch page, all of which appear to be expanding character options for new characters.
Interstitial: Our Hearts Intertwined, by Riley Hopkins.
Interstitial: Our Hearts Intertwined is a tabletop RPG about our connections with other people, the power we draw from those connections, and traveling to different worlds. It runs on the Powered by the Apocalypse engine.
In Interstitial, you will travel through the barriers between Worlds with your party. You'll meet new friends, enemies, teachers and learn about yourself. You will also be able to visit and partake in events in your favorite intellectual properties or your own worlds a là Kingdom Hearts. In short; Take two worlds that don't fit each other, smash them together, wipe away the dust and find out how they do.
If you're really interested in the magic that happens when you blend genres, Interstitial is THE game for you. Inspired by Kingdom Hearts, the game asks you to take characters from various media franchises (like, say the Red Ranger) and drop them into new worlds as they attempt to stop evil from corrupting the multiverse. It explicitly depends on the power of friendship, in its various forms, to strengthen your characters and give them the power to save the day. While it isn't specifically any one genre, the focus on bonds between people feels very resonant to the sentai genre generally, as well as RRBAAOAW.
Henshin!, by Cave of Monsters Games.
Henshin! A Sentai RPG is a storytelling tabletop game about young heroes with transformative powers who battle both monsters and personal problems. It borrows from a Japanese superhero culture of color-coded masked teams, giant robots, and over-the-top special effects. Anyone can tell fun, collaborative stories in Henshin!, regardless of familiarity with the tropes, and the game showcases a diversity of settings and characters for every player.
This book includes instructions and actual play examples for everything needed to start playing Henshin! right away. Also included are the eleven Color playbooks, seven ready-to-play settings, original exclusive art, and references to digital downloads. Let’s Henshin!
Henshin focuses on the tropes and interpersonal dynamics of the Sentai genre, including the personality differences between each colour ranger, as well as the special weapons and mechs that can fit together when the group works as a cohesive unit. The game system is inspired by No Dice No Masters, so instead of rolling to see if you succeed, you gain and spend tokens in kind of a narrative ebb and flow, allowing you to succeed when it's really important, and embrace failure when it's narratively interesting.
