Serious answer to why there is an audience for books like “changing tides” (where a lesbian falls in love with a man) is that many people, including other women, do not take lesbianism seriously: viewing it as an entirely political abstention from men and romanticize the idea of a gay woman overcoming the barriers in her heart to accept her true/natural/suppressed desires.

Why have I seen so much commentary, both from liberal news outlets and People on the Internet, that posits Trump as some kind of aberration? Like, why is it that in this year of our Lord 2016 the argument is that “this is not locker room talk, you’re just the worst” and not “we have established that rape culture is toxic and pervasive like 50 years ago and this is ~locker room talk~ and that’s the fucking problem”? I mean, we’re starting to have all these documentaries on rape on college campuses and a seeming dialogue opening up about what happens when men get in groups and don’t self-police dangerous behavior, and now I’m wondering if it’s actually a trend towards recognition of the problem or just a fucking fad to give tabloids something else to talk about and Netflix to churn out a few documentaries.
