i admit i have no idea where to stand re: f/actives. i don’t have any in my system so i dunno what it’s like. i’ve seen compelling arguments both for and against them. i know that if i were to see a f/active of myself i’d immediately dissociate/depersonalize but i also know ppl can’t control/have only moderate control over who shows up. i know it’s usually a coping mechanism so i’m probably just being an asshole.
i think, unless a widely-agreed consensus is reached, i’m just gonna say i’m f/active friendly because in all honesty i’m probably just being an ignorant asshole who has no idea what vae’s talking about
My two cents:
As long as they aren’t trying to pass themselves off as the version of that person who lives here, they’re really not harming anyone. And that only really counts for factives who are versions of still-living people. Obviously if a factive says they are Shakespeare or something, it’s even less of an issue, because it’s not much different than people saying they’re Cleopatra reincarnated, you know? It’s mostly only a problem when a factive is a factive of someone currently living, but any problems that could stem from that are relatively easy to avoid.
Though we don’t really see many factives claim to be a coping mechanism? (Since a lot of systems in general are the result of a defense mechanism.) Unless you’re talking about factkin, because -that- is sometimes claimed as a coping mechanism. And that’s a whole other animal altogether.
Our factives sometimes claim to be coping mechanisms. It depends on who you ask if they consider themselves that way or not, though, I think.
But it's a lot like a-casual-theolepsy said. We've met some really awful, concerning and uncomfortable-to-be-around factives. And we've known some really amazing ones who are very very considerate and conscious of the potential issues of their identity. It's like you said, you can't control factives showing up in your system, but hopefully they can control how they act about it.
We're probably slightly unique in that we used to have a factive who'd not only come face to face with the person he was a factive of (despite us not knowing him personally- he was famous) but sat down and had a more or less private 2 hour conversation with him and his bandmates. It was an interesting experience and I can't say I remember much about it but we remember vividly him putting the boundary down that he wouldn't even talk about his interests as though he was himself. When youre a factive (or host/cohost/etc of a system with factives) you kind of have to understand where the boundaries are. Usually that boundary for us is "never interacting with anyone we have a factive of directly" and never claiming to have that person's experience or anything like that.
Honestly, even as a system with factives we get wary around some systems with factives because they don't set those boundaries and it feels less like a thing that happened because a system saw a person and reacted to something about them by bringing a version of them to system, and more like an overzealous fan. I don't know. Maybe THAT's ignorant and assholey. Sorry this is kind of stupid.
