In the mail today, one of my favourite comic book artists, Hunt Emerson's new book, Lives of the Great Occultists. Brings together History, Occultism, and Comics in a nice little package that promises to be very entertaining - if you are interested in that sort of thing.
The search for the perfect pen continues... Kuretake brush pens are getting close to that. The bottom two are Zig Mangaka flexible med & fine and the yellow & orange packs are Fudegochi fine & super fine. The top one is a Copic Gasenfude.
They all work well with markers and have great quality ink. I have areal problem opening them however, as I really like the Japanese packaging...
The reason I chose a career in Illustration was the amazing concept work of people like Ralph McQuarrie and Ron Cobb famous for their work on films like Star Wars and Alien (and so many more). Pioneers in the world building that so many of us have enjoyed over the years.
RIP Ron Cobb
It is always difficult as an illustrator to get a handle on Theory and Context. Graphic novels and Comics are starting to become acceptable vehicles for exploring more serious subjects, some doing a better job than others. My favourite example at the moment would be the work of Sydney Padua and her illustrated exploration of the relationship - both real and imagined - between Ida Lovelace (writer of the first computer software) and Charles Babbage (Inventor of the difference engine) and their roles in the birth of the computer.
It is a very witty and detailed steampunk adventure with a well informed eye on the history of computers and computing.

So I had a mess with a Gel Plate the other day - using prints from a laser printer to create transfer prints. It is a bit hit and miss but here is my first print.
I have been trying lately to find effective ways of presenting sketchbooks. As ever the accidental works better than the well planned...
