Diddled a Little Too Far

The rising trend of demonizing “old guard” nerds as gatekeeping or pathetically fetishing a canon version of a story or fiction universe is directly correlated to the rise of major media conglomerates noticing that traditional nerdy obsessions* could be exploited by simplifying them into base signifiers and marketing them to a general audience, much to the detriment of the work’s original tone, character, and quality. And people will defend such major corporate marking ploys and pat themselves on the back for it, siding against people who essentially care about stories and settings in favor of those who would treat them as a nebulous or amorphous branded property.
