I love it when they inadvertently reveal themselves....
In the recent Rolling Stone interview Brian Hiatt asks the members about the first time they heard Jungkook's explicit version of Seven. He asks if, considering JK is the youngest, they were shocked or amused or if they gave him shit on text.
This isnt the point but as an aside, maybe I'm too critical but I thought that question was a feeble attempt to prompt a salacious or embarrassed response. BTS are not 18 year old college boys. I can't help wondering if a 29 year old western artist would be asked the same patronising question.
I didn't like the question but there was one thing I did enjoy:
Far more interesting than the question itself, or Jungkook's mature and level-headed response, was the way Jimin reacted, informing Brian (with a touch of attitude) that Jungkook is an adult.
It might seem unremarkable but look at Jimin's delivery. If he had said it with a laugh or a smile, it would be reasonable to think he was playing along. He wasn't.
Despite the fact that Brian was grinning like this was the most entertaining topic he could imagine, Jimin replied quietly in a flat tone, and made direct eye contact without the slightest smile. And the way he withdrew the eye contact towards the end with a touch of disdain... wow.
He made zero attempt to disguise his aggravation at the infantalising of Jungkook.
No, he was not playing along.
How did Brian not shrivel up under the weight of that unamused eye contact? The man must be made of steel. But I digress...
Something else I noticed was the speed of Jimin's reaction.
Brian had barely finished talking when Jimin clapped back.
It's like he wasn't just annoyed on Jungkook's behalf, he was personally offended by the question.
Why would it would rattle Park Jimin to this extent? What might be implied by the question?
Perhaps Brian was asking if the members would be amused or shocked because Jungkook, as the youngest, should be too timid or well mannered to use curse words in a song?
But why would jimin take that so personally? Anyway we know that's not true.
So if it's not about the word itself, perhaps it's about the associated action?
Perhaps, as Jungkook is the youngest, Brian thought they would be amused or shocked that he's singing explicitly about sex?
Teasing him for singing about sex would be wierd since the man is 29 years old, hardly a child. And so many songs are about sex? And why would Jimin be personally offended by that?
So maybe it's more specific? Did Brian think they might be shocked and amused by the brazen claims of fucking 7 days a week and doing it right, night after night? Is the implication that as the youngest, Jungkook is the least likely to have the sexual experience (or prowess) to back up those claims?
Might Jimin be offended at the suggestion that JK isn't the sex god he'd need to be to deliver on those promises? Now I think we're getting somewhere...
One more question your honour:
Why would Jimin even care if Jungkooks virility, performance, or dedication in bed was questioned?
He has a vested interest, your honour.
Change those lyrics to night after night, month after month, year after year...
Is it odd that nobody else felt the need to announce to the room that Jungkook is a grown up man?
Only Jimin? And everyone else chuckled at that? Ok. Yup.
Wait, not everyone chuckled.
Did you notice Jungkook's response?
Well played gentlemen. Nobody would ever guess.
