Am I the only horrible person who doesn’t want Oliver’s storyline in the sequel to be happy marriage and kids and happy life? That makes 0 sense to me. It does not compute to me that Oliver can leave Elio propose to his future wife, get married and be happy with his life, be in love with his wife and also claim to love Elio. 

I understand both points of view actually. If it was an obviously wrong choice for Elio and an unhappy marriage for Oliver, the reader could be left wondering what would have been IF a seemingly right person came along. Meeting someone good, someone who is capable to deliver happiness, pre-empties these options. We know that despite things being OK and despite meeting suitable people, their hearts truly are elsewhere. This means that their love is not simply an anchor in unhappy lives spent with shitty secondary choices, but THE love, the one that keeps haunting them even when the people in their life are beautiful and do everything right. It’s easier to remember young love with nostalgia when unhappy. However, if you still long for it deep inside even when life has offered you happiness with someone else, this points at a soul-merging experience. In this case it means you didn’t just want happiness, you wanted happiness with HIM and nothing else would do.
