If you’ve ever seen my art blog around, I hope it’s obvious: my favorite pairing in Diabolik Lovers is Azusa x Yui!
I think Azusa’s clingy side is very cute, and I like how Yui responds to him with shy delight. They’re very sweet – but, more than that, I like how their relationship develops.
There are two aspects of this ship that I’d like to highlight:
Azusa wants Yui to be happy.
In a deeply twisted way, Azusa tries to get along with Yui even in their very first scene alone together. In it, because he believes they’re kindred spirits in pain, Azusa tries to give her a nice, friendly cut with his knife… Then, curiously, he stops when he sees Yui upset and scared, and tells her to hurt him instead.
That’s how it starts between them, but not how it ends – the point of Azusa’s MB route is that they both grow to understand each other better. It’s not just Yui understanding Azusa, but Azusa understanding Yui and her true feelings.
So, while Azusa’s initial attempts to please Yui fall flat – he makes her cry when he wants to make her smile – and it takes time for him to get it right… it’s incredibly adorable when he does. Some of my favorite scenes in MB come after her father tries to kill her. Yui is devastated and breaks down, and Azusa comforts her. He’s gentle with Yui during one of her most vulnerable moments, and that’s what really made the ship sail for me. ♥
Because he doesn’t want to be the cause of Yui’s tears anymore, because he’s no longer unwanted and alone with Yui and his family by his side – Azusa gives up his infected arm, even though it means saying goodbye to his “friends.”
He also stops self-harming because he doesn’t want to make Yui sad anymore. Yui never directly asks him to stop and only says she won’t hurt him - he stops on his own.
Azusa tries to protect Yui
from wolves and the Tsukinamis…
…and from anyone else who might try to take her away…
Azusa has always tried to protect Yui. He’s not as strong as the other characters and he often gets hurt trying, but Azusa is incredibly tenacious. This might be strange to say, but Azusa wants so badly to protect Yui that he takes it too far sometimes, and I think that is fascinating and heartbreaking and even darkly romantic…
And Yui tries to protect Azusa, too. She doesn’t want Azusa to get hurt anymore. If protecting Azusa that means wrestling a knife out of a possessed Azusa’s hand, sacrificing her blood to Carla to save Azusa’s life, or even giving up her own life – so be it. Yui’s love is as strong as the rest of her.
I think we all know Yui’s love doesn’t work like a magic wand – Azusa is still quite fucked up inside – but because he wants to be good for her, he’s trying his best. And that’s what I really want for Yui.
