He sank deeper into Atsushi’s embrace, tired and swollen eyes closing under the heaviness of sorrow devouring him from inside. Atsushi’s body was warm and his fingertips cold, bringing at least a bit of comfort to his aching body. In a few moments, there was not a ruthless killer, a broken and insane man in the tiger boy’s arms anymore - he turned into a child seeking mother love and warmth of a save embrace. Atsushi was doing well… "I could save her… if I came sooner. Or if I never joined mafia…“ Akutagawa’s voice was weak, but his words clear as he nuzzled his face against the other’s chest. His head fell down, breath even heavier than before, face burning with fever slowly creeping over his fatigued body. Soon in a delirious state, the mafioso’s body slumped against the boy’s chest and silent, hateful words left his dry lips in a silent murmur. "I will kill them all… the whole Mafia… everyone… will die…”
Seeing Akutagawa crumble like that only broke his heart further. It wasn’t the raven’s fault that everything went downhill and Atsushi made sure to tell him that every time the mafioso had a breakdown.
For the time being, he continued to hold the other close and to card his fingers through the black and white strands of hair. It seemed to be working for it looked like Akutagawa was starting to calm down -- or the fatigue was too much -- for which he was glad.
“You didn’t know. And if you did then they would have made sure that you couldn’t reach her in time.“ Atsushi spoke slowly. “If you never joined then you wouldn’t have come so far. She would have died sooner in the slums.”
His gaze softened as he leant down to place a gentle peck on the top of Akutagawa’s head. Ahh he was starting to break into a fever. That meant that Atsushi would have to soon move away and bring a wet cloth.
“You need to rest first, Akutagawa-san.“
