I don’t know the full story as Roe87 and I were only on the periphery of each others circles and didn’t directly interact much. All of the information I have is hearsay, but from what I understand they initially pulled a couple of fics to be reworked as original works to be published. Not long after that, they announced they were taking a break from fandom, and a couple of months after that, they deleted their works and orphaned their gift fics.

I’ve not heard or seen anything that says they were forced out of fandom, nor have I seen anything from my own experiences in fandom that would suggest that’s what has happened.

There were several of Roe87’s fics that I quite enjoyed, and there were some that weren’t my cup of tea, but whichever way you float it, losing an author who had 100+ works is a huge shock to the fandom.

If you're searching for a reason as to why Roe left this fandom, the reason is they felt unsupported and also felt bullied.

Roe was targeted and harassed for years in this fandom, as were other queer and trans writers. Roe said on social media that they were quitting the fandom because the loudest voices left commenting were the abusive ones. Genuine readers weren't there anymore, or they'd stopped commenting.

Roe continued to receive abuse on ao3 long after they'd stopped posting new fics, so they chose to delete it all for their mental health. I don't blame them.

A handful of fics that Roe really loved and wanted to stay on ao3 were left up, regardless of being gift fic or not.

If you want to show appreciation to Roe you could and should leave new comments on those fics that remain. But let's face it you probably won't because commenting on ao3 seems a thing of the past. (Unless you're a troll.)

There's plenty writers who could've used a little support like that but you're too late because they all stopped writing. Me included.

There's so much more I could say about the 2 types of bullying going on in this fanbase targeting writers, but I doubt it would change the fanmade hierarchy already in place and the enablers holding it all up.

It is heartbreaking. I've now watched at least 5 of my fandom friends, all writers, leave because of bullying. 4 were new writers like me.

We discussed at the time about speaking up, a couple of them tried to, but there was no fandom support only fandom enablement of further bullying and abuse, or indifference, so it discourages any victims from speaking up.

It isn't just Anon Hate (and usually when it is Anon we still have a good guess who it is!) but boldly and out in the open, by other writers who are plain jealous of the self-perceived competition. And without enough active readers engaging, this is the only side of fandom we get to see.

I've never been in a fanbase that is so hellbent on being hostile to its writers and rewarding the bullies and the cliques over everyone else, and this is why most new writers leave because they feel targeted and left out.

I got off easy compared to my friends! All I got was a bad impersonator and some mean messages, my friends got far worse and for much longer.
