this sims 2 ad has like such deep gay energy to it. Like this feels like queer history to me
The funny thing is that it wasn't even an intentional stance taking. They just forgot to code a check to make sure characters genders "matched", resulting in that characters could get into relationships regardless of gender.
What the hell are you talking about? They didn't forget anything. A programmer for the sims 1 was a gay man who programmed gay relationships into the game and they kept adding it back, intentionally, in each game.
Actually, you’re both correct. It was an accident and a deliberate decision by one gay developer:
“During The Sims’s protracted development, the team had debated whether to permit same-sex relationships in the game. If this digital petri dish was to accurately model all aspects of human life, from work to play and love, it was natural that it would facilitate gay relationships. But there was also fear about how such a feature might adversely affect the game. “No other game had facilitated same-sex relationships before—at least, to this extent—and some people figured that maybe we weren’t the ideal ones to be first, as this was a game that E.A. really didn’t want to begin with,” Barret told me. “It felt to me like a fear thing.” After going back and forth for several months, the team finally decided to leave same-sex relationships out of the game code.
When Barrett joined the company, in October, 1998, he was unaware of the decision. A fortnight into his new job, he found himself with nothing to do when his supervisor, the game’s lead programmer, Jamie Doornbos, took a short vacation. Jim Mackraz, Barrett’s boss, needed a task to occupy his new employee, and he handed Barrett a document that outlined how social interactions in the game would work; the underlying rules for the game’s A.I. that would dictate how the characters would dynamically interact with one another. “He didn’t think I could handle it with Jamie off on vacation, but he figured that at least I’d be out of his hair,” Barrett told me. “Neither he nor I realized that he’d given me an old design document to work from.”
That design document predated the decision to exclude gay relationships in the game. Its pages described a web of social interactions, in which every kind of romantic relationship was permitted. That week, Barrett confounded the expectations of his disbelieving boss. He successfully wrote the basic code for social interactions, including same-sex relationships. “In hindsight, I probably should have questioned the design,” Barrett, who is gay, said. “But the design felt right, so I just implemented it. Later, Will Wright stopped by my desk,” Barrett said. “He told me that liked the social interactions, and that he was glad to see that same-sex support was back in the game.” Nobody on the team questioned Barrett’s work. “They just pretty much ignored it,” he said. “After a while, everyone was just used to the design being there. It was widely expected that E.A. would just kill it, anyway.”
In early 1999, before E.A. had a chance to kill the design, Barrett was asked to create a demo of the game to be shown at E3. The demo would consist of three scenes from the game. These were to be so-called on-rails scenes—not a true, live simulation but one that was preplanned, and which would shake out the same way each time it was played, in order to show the game in its best light. One of the scenes was a wedding between two Sims characters. “I had run out of time before E3, and there were so many Sims attending the wedding that I didn’t have time to put them all on rails,” Barrett said.
On the first day of the show, the game’s producers, Kana Ryan and Chris Trottier, watched in disbelief as two of the female Sims attending the virtual wedding leaned in and began to passionately kiss. They had, during the live simulation, fallen in love. Moreover, they had chosen this moment to express their affection, in front of a live audience of assorted press.”

Advice From a Librarian to Combat the U.S. Literacy Crisis #1:
If you don't read books: Read a book. Read any book. Read a book you loved when you were a kid. Read a book that interests you now. Read an entire collection of poetry or essays and think about why the author or editor arranged those works in that order. Read an erotic novel. Read nonfiction. Read graphic novels or manga. Read a kids' chapter book or a YA novel. Read a book digitally. Read a book on paper. Read an audiobook and really focus on it - if you notice yourself spacing out, scroll back to the last words you remember and try listening again. Read any book. And then when you finish it, celebrate for a minute (get those endorphins going!) and then read another one.
If you read books: Try reading a book that intimidates you. Maybe it's thick. Maybe it uses archaic language. Maybe it's a book that was translated from a language you don't speak into a language you do speak. Maybe it's a genre you don't normally read. Maybe it's the same kind of book as always, but you put your phone away and really focus on reading for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. (I know I've been struggling with this.) What scares you about reading? What challenges have you been avoiding? Try getting out of your comfort zone just a tiny bit, celebrate for a minute, and then try again.
Life Update
Life has been loud in some not great ways. Nothing majorly devastating but just very demanding. Work especially has been rough as we’re dealing with being incredibly understaffed and when you have people like me who are good at the job and dependable, it feels like we’re constantly bearing the brunt of it and getting pulled every which way.
For the past few months, it’s been work and come straight home and crash and wake up and do it all over. Still understaffed but things appear to be on the mend so here’s hoping for a little relief soon.
In better news, this has driven me to take some matters regarding my career into my own hands. I just started training for a certification that my employer is covering and with the support of my mentor. This can help me not only make a very good amount of money but would get me out of my current position which severely goes against my more introverted nature. Training is going well and I’m feeling very good about it.
Stress has been making me sick on and off so I hadn’t been able to see most of my family since Christmas since I was getting sick like every other weekend. Finally got out this weekend to hang out and though my family is far from perfect, I’m so thankful for them. There’s so much love and support there which I don’t take for granted.
I also had a birthday last weekend. I’m very anti-celebration for my own birthday and just like to use that day to relax and do as much or as little as I want. Getting to see another year is always a blessing.
Writing had to take a backseat to a lot just with how little time, energy, and mental bandwidth I’ve had. I’ve attempted to get some things done but haven’t been successful at getting more than a few sentences or paragraphs without my brain just shutting down. I even tried to do a one shot on my birthday to post as a gift but couldn’t get it done. So much of my mental energy is going towards trying to focus and get stuff done at work that the second I leave, my brain just sort of cuts off anything that isn’t basically directly contributing to moving around and keeping me alive which sucks tremendously.
I am, of course, not abandoning any of my works and should be able to get back to it soon once things lighten up a bit. My training for my certification is about 10 weeks and while I’m certain I’ll post updates while I’m training, I do want to be transparent that this is going to take priority. If I don’t do well, I have to pay my job back and it costs a pretty penny so I gotta make this a priority as much as possible.
As always, I appreciate you all and your patience during these periods of hiatus. I truly believe that once I’m out of my current role, these will be far more infrequent. I’ll have way more flexibility in my schedule and getting to work back office which will be infinitely better for me mentally.
The next time I post will be with updates so I appreciate you sticking with me just a little bit longer.

the removal of physical media is not the inevitable progression of improving tech, its like the removal of the 3.5mm jack: purely a result of profit physical games still account for about 1/5th of all sales of video games
but by only selling digital games sony can be the ultimate arbiter of their price. they can stop you lending games and force another sale instead. they can stop the sale of second hand games and keep prices artificially high. they can set any price they want and that will be your only option.
