D3r insisted he was fine, which in this case meant he was upright, wrapped in three blankets, and staring at the wall with the grim patience of someone enduring a mild but deeply personal betrayal.
His helmet sat abandoned on the table. That alone was evidence.
Avery hovered in the kitchen, sleeves pushed up, core dimmed down to a soft, worried ember as the chili bubbled. He kept glancing over his shoulder like D3r might disintegrate if left unobserved for more than thirty seconds. Beans, tomatoes, spices—he’d gone a little heavier on the heat than usual, on purpose. Comfort food, but the kind that made you feel alive.
“You don’t have to—” D3r started, voice rough.
“I do,” Avery said immediately, not even turning around. “You’re sick. This is the rule. Sick people get chili.”
D3r accepted this with a long-suffering sigh and pulled the blankets tighter, because honestly? If this was his fate, it could be worse. It could be soup.
When Avery finally brought the bowl over, steam curling between them, D3r looked at it like it was a holy offering. He took a careful bite, then another, shoulders easing just a fraction.
“…It’s good,” he admitted.
Avery smiled, small and relieved, and nudged closer, sitting on the floor by D3r’s knees. His glow warmed the room in a way the fire never quite managed.
