“The LEGO Movie was my favorite movie of 2014, but it strikes me that the main character was male, because I feel like in our current culture, he HAD to be. The whole point of Emmett is that he’s the most boring average person in the world. It’s impossible to imagine a female character playing that role, because according to our pop culture, if she’s female she’s already SOMEthing, because she’s not male. The baseline is male. The average person is male. You can see this all over but it’s weirdly prevalent in children’s entertainment. Why are almost all of the muppets dudes, except for Miss Piggy, who’s a parody of femininity? Why do all of the Despicable Me minions, genderless blobs, have boy names? I love the story (which I read on Wikipedia) that when the director of The Brave Little Toaster cast a woman to play the toaster, one of the guys on the crew was so mad he stormed out of the room. Because he thought the toaster was a man. A TOASTER. The character is a toaster. I try to think about that when writing new characters— is there anything inherently gendered about what this character is doing? Or is it a toaster?”

ART and murderbot make me crazy because they are both so wildly apart from any other being (bot or human) around that they thought they would never have a friend. never be understood. ART is more intelligent than any other system it's ever met by a mile. murderbot is a rogue secunit that has spent its entire life lying about it. the two of them have been so alone for so long that a friend is a foreign concept, only for others, only for humans. and then they meet. and theyre like hey. wait. youre like me. i didnt think that was even possible. i want to be around you and save humans with you and be up in your business and if i can't im gonna freak out. i want to annoy you until we die. i kidnapped you when i got hurt because i dont trust anyone else. i want to do surgery on you. i put my human's lives in your hands willingly. i have never been truly seen before you. do you want to watch tv forever?
I can't get over how SecUnit thinks of Ratthi. SecUnit casually calls Ratthi its friend in narration after categorically refusing to refer to Mensah, ART, or Miki as friends. SecUnit thinks Amena should go to Ratthi for dating advice because Ratthi apparently has the most game out of anyone SecUnit has ever met. SecUnit calls him to help it solve murder cases. To SecUnit, Ratthi is a badass bro who always has its back when canonically, Ratthi is an academic from Planet Granola whose best friends are middle aged lesbians biologists. He's a mega nerd. He probably runs a Discord for historical RPF about the Preservation founders. And he's the coolest person SecUnit knows. Obsessed.

"I am trapped in my own body." Wasn't meant to be a clue. It was meant to be a warning and an apology. ART didn't delay it, Target Controll System did. It wasn't until TCS went down that the message was released and by then any value of it as a warning had been lost.
ART tried to tell Murderbot "I'm not the one attacking you, I'm not in control of my actions, look out." It tried to warn it and was stopped from doing so.
How much would that have changed everything if Murderbot had known from the beginning?

“I’ve fucked everything up,” I’d told ART. This was when I was in Medical after my “incident.” Mensah and I had called Amena so she wouldn’t worry (or at least so she would know that I was still alive, even I know that’s important for human children). I told Mensah I wanted to watch media and she had left, and I’d blocked the humans’ comm and feed access to the room.
ART had said, That’s nothing new.
I ignored that because it was just trying to reassure me. If it started being sympathetic it would be terrifying. “Your crew isn’t going to want me to do their security anymore.”
Why is that?
That question was obviously a trap and I should ignore it. It wasn’t as if I could put the answer into words. I was different. It wasn’t just the alien contamination.

1 hour study of this photograph to de-stress after this week. Mountains are so simple and I needed to turn my brain off.
I didn't allow myself to color pick from my reference and had to choose all my colors manually. I actually got really close on a bunch of them! But my saturation was off. Pretty happy with the result.
