ur post has literally just opened the floodgates of my creativity for this post (i love/hate/love the idea of the first-years taking out their new-found toxicity out on each other), and then it was like… what if we had a version of twisted wonderland that followed the same formula as the first one, but instead of any positive changes, everything just progressively gets worse?
“As much as I would like to, I cannot ignore these infractions. It's for your own sake. Understood?” — Riddle Rosehearts {Book 1, Chapter 19}
deuce: hey, ace? jack just texted me. he says he needs my help to set up the track for next week’s competition. do you mind covering for me during riddle’s study hall this week?
ace: what? deuce, you do realize if you fail one more test, professor trein’s going to send you to remedial classes, right?
deuce: well, i know that, but this seems pretty important… the track field is huge. jack’s already been spending all week preparing for it by himself. and nobody else is strong enough to help him…
ace: you are one b-minus away from failing history this semester! you really can’t afford to miss out on riddle’s tutoring. and if you get stuck in remedial classes and private afterschool sessions, the rest of us probably won’t be able to see you for, like… what, three weeks? c’mon— you’ve got friends that love you and would hate it if they couldn’t hang out with you for that long.
deuce: it’s… just one study session, ace. and even if i fail, i don’t think it’s going to be that serious—
ace: deuce. this isn’t funny anymore. i don’t like it anymore than you do, but these are the rules, and we’ve got to play by them. if you wanna be stupid and send your grades careening off the cliffside, be my guest! it’s not my life you’re going to ruin by having a bleeding heart.
deuce: …well… i guess it won’t matter too much, either way. i’m… sure jack can handle himself.
ace: that’s better. now come on. we’re already late.
“Look, I totally get why you see Riddle as a tyrant, and why you disapprove of his methods. But for me... I can't hold that against him, you know?" — Trey Clover {Book 1, Chapter 19}
deuce: sorry, jack, but… i can’t make it today.
jack: deuce, is somethin’ going on with you? you’ve always jumped at the opportunity to help out the track team before, and this is the fourth time in a row you’ve put a rain check on it.
deuce: i’d love to help out, it’s just… well, with the semester ramping up, ace is just worried about my grades, is all.
jack: ace is worried about your grades? i respect giving it your all in everything you do, but… shouldn’t worrying about your grades be your prerogative? giving it your all means nothin’ if you’re just not into it.
deuce: i would rather be helping you out on the field… but it’s not that bad, really. he’s just worried about me! and he’s right, besides. if my grades are good, i’ll have more time to spend with all of you!
jack: …i’ve given you plenty of opportunities to spend time with me. and you haven’t taken a single one.
deuce: …i know. i’m sorry about that. but you know how ace can be sometimes. we’ll hang out soon — promise.
jack: …you say that every single time. when are you goin’ to follow through with it, exactly?
“I don't care if it IS just for three days. Savanaclaw's got no use for dead weight, no matter how short or long your stay." — Leona Kingscholar {Book 3, Chapter 13}
epel: jack, i really need your help with something.
epel: it’s just… these savanaclaw students keep harassing me on my way to potionology. i’d love to give them the ol’ 1-2, but if i do, then my accent might slip out, and then rook will probably hear and report it to vil, and you know how he’s going to feel about that—
jack: okay, okay, i get it… so what’s in it for me?
jack: you want me to accompany you when you’re walking to potionology, yeah? if i help you, what do i get out of it?
epel: i don’t… jack, ain’t we friends? can’t ya just… help me out? ah’ll pay ya back for it later if that’s what ya really want, but—
jack: sorry, epel, but i’m not really the kind of guy to take someone at their word — not anymore. i’ve got no reason to help you, so i need you to give me one. i need a guarantee that this’ll pay off for me, or i ain’t doin’ it. you got anythin’ like that?
epel: …not at the moment, no.
jack: then sorry, felmier, but you’re gonna have to find someone else. i’d tell you to ask deuce, but that guy’s kinda… unreliable.
“Your moves are all utterly unchoreographed. It's embarrassing to watch, frankly—and woefully inelegant, to boot. You get a five out of one hundred. Next time you pick a fight, think twice about who you're challenging." — Vil Schoenheit {Book 5, Chapter 7}
epel: hey ortho, can i ask you for a favor… um. what are you doing? is that a… recording booth?
ortho: oh, hello epel felmier! and yes, this is indeed a recording booth! my brother made it for me. do you like it?
epel: it definitely looks professional, if nothing else. kind of tacky, though. what are you using it for?
ortho: well, vil schoenheit is thinking of making a musical production for the film research club’s next project! i was thinking of trying out for the lead role, so i’m playing around with the vocal synthesizers idia gave me to find the perfect pitch. i’m really excited for the auditions!
epel: …you’re going to sing? you? in front of… all those people? are you sure?
ortho: …is there a problem, epel felmier?
epel: well, if that’s what you want to do, ortho, i’m not going to stop you… but you do remember what happened during the sdc auditions, the last time you tried to sing in front of vil? he said you were… what was it again? “genreless”? and as much as i hate it, he had a point. and that’s not going to change no matter how much you pitch your voice.
ortho: i… i know that, but—!
epel: ortho, it’s not just the singing. i’ve seen you dance, you know. and just to be blunt about it, drunken monkeys could probably put more emotion into their dancing than you do. and all of that aside, you’re a robot who’s still a rookie when it comes to being an actual person. vil would literally have to be completely insane to put you in a musical! you’re ten times more likely to end up backstage, fixing lights or something. you’ll probably be better suited for it, too.
epel: i don’t mean to sound cruel, ortho, but i just don’t want you getting hurt. even people you think you know can say things that hurt your feelings. and when you perform on a stage, that’s a gamble you’ll be taking with a bunch of people you don’t know. just… be careful, okay?
epel: good. now, about that favor…
“I-I couldn’t. I’m just one guy. Nothing I do would make a difference…" — Idia Shroud {Book 6, Chapter 48}
sebek: SHROUD! i’ve recently heard that you plan to star in schoenheit’s next musical production! i understand most humans around this school consider that to be a great honor, and so i wish you the best of luck in your endeavor!
ortho: oh, thank you, sebek zigvolt! but… um, i changed my mind. i’m not going to audition.
sebek: …huh? whyever not?
ortho: i just don’t want to embarrass myself. my dancing will never be as expressive as i’d like to be, and i know from experience that my vocal performance will never be optimal enough for a live audience. given all of those factors, i determined it would be best if i didn’t try out at all. i don’t want to waste the time of people who would really make this show great, and, well… that’s just not me.
sebek: that’s… uncharacteristically pessimistic of you. you haven’t even tried yet.
ortho: oh, i don’t need to. it’s all in the data.
sebek: …and who gave you this “data”, exactly?
ortho: my data comes from a variety of sources, but if i had to condense it down… vil schoenheit is the largest contributor. upon reviewing several clips of how he normally judges people, and based on my own experience with him, i came to my ultimate decision.
ortho: …is something wrong, sebek zigvolt? you’re not typically this quiet in conversation for more than ten seconds. was it… was it something i said?
sebek: no! no. it’s not you, shroud. i was just… thinking. pardon me, i have to take care of something.
“I have a wonderful gift for you all." — Malleus Draconia {Book 7, Chapter 36}
yuu: sebek. i just caught some very interesting news yesterday, and i thought you might like to hear it.
sebek: truly? silver hasn’t fallen asleep headfirst into the water fountain again, has he?
yuu: no, actually. i was walking epel to potionology yesterday, and he told me that someone had replaced all of vil’s hair products with tar. nobody can get it out, and now he refuses to step foot outside the dorm.
sebek: what are you implying, human?
yuu: well, i know that a regular person couldn’t have done it — they definitely wouldn’t have been able to get past rook. they would’ve probably have had to teleport it inside, and there’s only one species in all of twisted wonderland with enough magic to master teleportation as a teenager. and last i checked, malleus and lilia have better things to do than make sure vil can never show his face in polite society again.
sebek: …frankly, i don’t know what it is you are referring to. i understand it is your nature to attempt to solve problems, but i assure you, there is no “problem” here.
yuu: sebek, i’m not mad. just… tell me why you would do something like this? i don’t understand.
sebek: i am simply doing what i see fit. and it is not any of your business, either way.
yuu: sebek, i’m just trying to help…
sebek: yuu, i respect you more than any of the riffraff that roam these halls, but i’m afraid you don’t seem to realize when your “help” isn’t wanted. why don’t you focus on yourself before turning your attention to others? i feel as though that would save you a lot of undue trouble.
yuu: …*sigh* you try to help someone, and this is the thanks you get…
“Ah... Ahhh! Ahhh, yes! Of course! A way home for you! Ha ha ha! Why, I'm expending every effort!" — Dire Crowley {Book 4, Chapter 2}
ace: yuu, where were you yesterday?
ace: i asked you to help me make a study guide for protection class and you never showed! if you’re not going to come, you could at least just say it outright.
yuu: wh— oh. right, right, that. sorry, i was planning on going, really, i just… y’know, fell asleep.
yuu: yup. sorry, i’ll be there next time. just, uh… so busy these days. you know how it is, being the housewarden of a dorm and all. really sorry about that, ace, but hey — maybe next time, you can ask jack or something. i'm sure he'd love to help you out.
ace: …can you at least look up from your phone when you talk to me?
(this was way longer than i thought it would be lol)
